RICHARD TAYTOR  This program has failed on occasion for me. In the present case, I upgraded (from 1.6) and discovered that the latest version (2.1) still has the same problem. BOMArchiveHelper (not to mention tar) has no trouble with the file, which can be found here:

WAHA.06X36  You have a much better chance of getting things fixed if you file a bug report, but now that I have seen this, it will most likely be fixed in the next version.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  That has been my experience as well. Also, the drop-down calendar does not show as it should when I click on the date/time in my menubar. Not using this anymore until it gets cleaned up a bit.

Glims
Aug 20 2009

RICHARD TAYTOR  Documentation states:

Re-opens last session when Safari starts

but that is misleading because Glims does *not* restore the history for each tab (i.e., any back/forward branches are lost). Saft properly restores session state, and I hope Glims implements this essential feature soon.

Apple iWork 09

RICHARD TAYTOR  Apple seems to target those who wish to use their computers as heaters. I'm disgusted with their software. Look for yourself, at the effect on your system resources (Activity Monitor will show that). It's quite simply negligence. Demand better! Don't put up with this crap!

Apple Numbers
Jun 20 2009

RICHARD TAYTOR  If you like jelly beans and Jobs, you probably like Numbers. I find the interface to be somewhat unfinished, though I'd probably use it if it weren't such a pig. The idle processor usage runs beyond 10% and it's ever-increasing/leaking memory allocation is already at a ridiculous 113MB RPVT (for a very simple table); more bloatware from Apple. Pathetic.

Alternatively, Tables is fast and uses system resources responsibly.

Firefox
Apr 22 2009

RICHARD TAYTOR  Firefox 3 introduced a mistake which affects users (running under Tiger) with alternative keyboard layouts: The keyboard shortcuts are effectively hard-coded to QWERTY. This "bug" has been reported, and a patch has even been submitted, but Mozilla developers report that they are too busy with other things to fix it before version 3.6 (maybe).

Firefox is certainly a useful tool but this kind of mistake (no, it's not actually a bug) does not bode well. Mozilla needs good programmers, not more zealots.

Firefox
Mar 14 2009

RICHARD TAYTOR  Firefox 3 introduced a new bug (under Tiger): Apparently, someone changed the key-mapping for shortcuts which are now hard-coded to the QWERTY layout. It remains broken for those of us who use a different layout. The issue has been posted to Mozilla's bug tracker and someone was helpful enough to include a patch and explain the problem in detail; however this appears to have been essentially ignored. What's going on at Mozilla...

RICHARD TAYTOR  Something is wrong with version three. To be more precise: it's footprint on system resources has increased tremendously; while editing it also frequently freezes for short intervals (a second or two). Version two works well for me.

QuicKeys X
Nov 5 2007

RICHARD TAYTOR  I also used QuicKeys years ago, before OS X. It certainly didn't "[reign] as king" in that environment, though perhaps it reigned by default (as it appears to do now, with essentially no competition under OS X). Then KeyQuencer appeared; it was small fast and efficient. QuicKeys was greedy, bloated and unstable by contrast. Perhaps this has changed, though I notice the file size of the installer, and I remain as yet uninspired to try it once again. If it works for you, don't let me crunch your buzz. :}

RICHARD TAYTOR  The information which this program provides is excellent. It also requires ongoing maintenance from the developer. The interface could be better (and perhaps the developer is working on a cocoa version); however, it works. If you just want eye candy, go get some widgets.

SpamSieve
Sep 19 2006

RICHARD TAYTOR  SpamSieve does indeed work well in marking spam; however, I have found that when it does make mistakes, it usually errs on the wrong side, marking good mail as spam when it should be the other way round. (Note: These result were obtained after executing the training procedures described in the manual.)

I am compelled to comment now because I notice that it mistakenly marked a good message as spam when it contains a valid "In-Reply-To" header (with matching message still in my outbox). I imagine SpamSieve is not alone in this ignorance; in any case, I believe that a client-integrated spam filter should certainly consider message IDs.

SpamSieve
Sep 21 2006

MICHAEL TSAI  That's unusual. SpamSieve is designed to be conservative. There is usually only one good message put in the spam folder for every ten or more spam messages put in the inbox. Please send me SpamSieve's log file so that I can see what happened; there may be something unusual about the training or setup.

SpamSieve in most cases does not have access to the outgoing messages, so it cannot make use of the In-Reply-To header.

GyazMail
Dec 11 2004

RICHARD TAYTOR  GyazMail is certainly more useful to me than Apple's Mail (or any other OS X e-mail client I've tried); however, I believe it would benefit from some simple changes.

I save my e-mail and I don't like to impose a restrictive hierarchical structure using the usual folders/mailboxes. I prefer to keep it all together and search for what I want. Unfortunately, GyazMail is very slow to do this, slower, in fact, than using the standard unix tools (like grep). My e-mail represents a valuable resource in which I must be able to find things quickly. I believe I am not alone in this interest. Searching should be improved, and it should be possible to save queries.

Another thing (which I find rather annoying) in the message list: GyazMail only displays the sender or the recipient. This is a problem because I want to see who I sent a message to AND who sent a message to me (not one or the other). I would prefer to use a different font attribute to indicate that the sender is me.

It would also be useful if rules for outgoing messages were able to interrupt the send process (for instance: to avoid sending from the wrong account).
