Type: ReviewDate: 27 Oct 2006 10:44FMPro v8.5 sucks so much juice out of the entire system that even the Dock is crawling. As soon as FMPro is quit everything returns to normal. The problem is equally bad whether a database is open or not, so there is nothing wrong with my particular test situation. Also, I have this verified on several independent machines now.
I would seriously reconsider if I were you and thinking about FileMaker Pro.

Type: ReviewDate: 10 Oct 2006 05:39Warning! Don't buy this product. I've tested the 30 day full trial version of FMPro 8.5 now and conclude:
1) Still Carbon antique! This is what Apple writes about Carbon: "Carbon is designed to provide a gentle migration path for developers transitioning their applications from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X". It has gone more than six (6!) years now since Apple released Mac OS X.
2) Controls don't use Aqua (popups, drop menues etc)!
3) Text rendering don't use Quartz in many places.
4) The entire GUI is absolutely non-Mac! Toolbar icons, buttons, DB-fields etc. look like they came from Windoze 98.
5) The entire application is a memory hog (slows down other applications and OS functionality)! This is true even when FMPro is not processing anything.
6) No possibility to turn off startup scripts! After five days of coding I accidentally put a "Close Window" script step at the beginning of the startup script. Now the entire database shuts down as soon as it has opened, with NO way to stop that. Even FMPro support acknowledged this problem. When did it first appear on their FAQ section? Answer: In FMPro 7 !!!!!! Back then though there used to be a solution – pressing cmd-period at startup, but that option has now been removed. Instead, the support recommended me to BUY the Advanced version of their software. Yeah, right...
Bottom line – I have seen more Mac OS compliant Java applications (and faster too). I am sorry, but since I don't even like running this application on my own computer, I can't hand a tool like this over to my customers – not even close! Sure, it's got features but with a terrible way of accessing them.
P.S. To Mr D9, I don't think you should drag Apple into this anymore. They totally left this company, and actually Filemaker today depreciates the value of Apples contributions. If you happen to know the Swedish language (don't blame you if you don't) then please read what www.filemaker.se says in their FAQ section regarding their own question "Är FileMaker verkligen ett Mac-program från början? (Publ. 2006-06-22)" ("Is really Filemaker originally a Mac application?").

Type: ReviewDate: 27 Jul 2006 07:02Oh, I just forgot – the application also hangs from time to time for absolutely no reason, and you have to force-quit it.
:-(

Type: ReviewDate: 27 Jul 2006 07:00Extremely unreliable program!
You have to check all files in the backup archive individually(!) to make sure they are really copied. Many files and folders are ignored entirely when specified using "dot files", for example "Application".
It is far to easy to wind up with multiple backup files. For example, the "System Preferences" move many files that will also get moved if you backup your Library folder. Redundancy will always lead to trouble, sooner or later.
A backup utility should be reliable. If it's not, then it isn't a backup program but just an enormous waste of time.

Type: CommentsDate: 26 Mar 2006 05:11Neil_m, feature lists are important parts of the evaluation of an application. Knowing a product's current and future expected functionality makes a big difference when chosing the right tool.
Besides, the developers at Mindre Panda are of course also directly mailed about these requests. And thanks to the post here at Macupdate they don't have to recieve one hundred suggestions about the same features every day, because readers of this review will know that this has been discussed already. Instead, new readers will be able to add there ideas and comments to the list, which would not have been possible if it was only mailed to the developers.
Neil_m, if you don't like the feature requests mixed with the other review topics, I suggest you just don't look at them.

Type: ReviewDate: 22 Mar 2006 03:43This is just what a dictionary tool should be – a widget. This guy pops up exactly when you need it, and without the typical delay of for example "WordFinder". Also, it is a great initiative to make this widget free. Actuallly, I liked it so much that I felt like spending a few extra minutes explaining how it could be improved even further. Please, don't regard this as discontent.
Suggestions for improvement:
1) On the flip-side of the widget, only the actual checkboxes are active. The typical Mac behavior allows also the labels to be clicked.
2) You have to press return after each search term is entered. It should be enough to just exit the search-term field (e.g. tabbing or selecting the popup).
3) Text in the hitlist cannot be selected, and therefore not copied. The I-beam cursor is there, but it doesn't select anything. Instead it moves the window, which is really awkward and non-Mac:ish.
4) The feature list could be expanded to also include a Swedish-Swedish and English-English choice in the popup. This could be used to display word-class information for the search term in the original language, and possibly also supply synonyms.
5) There are a couple of text parts that include mal-formated characters. Actually, the very first search term I tried was the word "perform". The result contained a whole bunch of "%%" sequences without any obvious meaning.
6) Since this widget accesses a web server to find the words in the dictionary, it would have been really nice to get some feedback when it is buzy waiting for server response. A common spinning beach-ball or sun cursor would be enough.
7) Every hitlist term is followed by a numbered list of definitions. It is totally unnecessary to write the text "1. " for every single line which contains only a single entry. This is definately a minor detail, but when I browsed through the text it resulted oftenly in unnecessary scrolling up and down looking for a second entry which wasn't there.
Over-all however, a great little widget!

Type: Hint/TipDate: 17 Jan 2006 04:15To the developers of Merlin:
I believe you should take the complaints about language errors really seriously. This could sink your ship like a canon ball would, which I think would be too sad.
How much would it cost you to let all your texts pass through an English grammar check as compared to the loss of customers? Yes, of course, there's the national pride too. But you have to agree that it's quite nice to have a universal way of communicating between all nations in the world (or 'word' as you call it). I definately think so, and I'm a proud Swedish viking. You should be happy that language isn't Chinese.

First, I am not exactly a newcomer. Secondly, of all the people I've heard downloading this app there is not a single one that has seen it work(!).
