Google SketchUp | Nov 18 2008 |
RAZZ I created a drawing of a house plan in Sweet Home 3d (a free app) some time ago and wanted to see how well SketchUp handled it. The drawing has walls, windows, doors, some furniture, and other ditties. I wanted to see if SketchUp could put a roof on the house but I never got that far. I exported the file from Sweet Home 3D as a .obj file (the only option you have) and imported this file into Cheetah3D (an awesome app). I then exported it from Cheetah3D as a .3ds file. SketchUp did not import a .3ds file properly at all. So, I exported the file from Cheetah3D to a .dxf file which SketchUp did import albeit very slowly. The resulting drawing was tiny in scale. This is not right. I need accurate dimensions. The resulting file had over 250,000 entities - what did this thing do, take every itty bitty line and make it an entity? As a result, moving around is EXTREMELY slow - zooming and panning tested my patience. I did draw a few things but lost interest in using it because it's performance on this file was so bad. SketchUp can be used for *simple* drawings containing small numbers of objects and that's about it. It is like 3D electronic graph paper and it might serve your needs so give it a try but don't be surprised if it starts to balk at higher levels of complexity. (Version 7.0.8656)

ARVIDTP Yeah - many DXF exporters produce models with HUGE numbers of entities - was just dealing with this today at work (I shouted "a 217MB 2D vector image???"). Almost any program would slow down with that file as input. SketchUp is great, even with fairly complex models, IF you drew your model in SketchUp. If you drew it in other software, maybe not so much. (Version 7.1.5803)

Quinu | Jun 15 2008 |
RAZZ Quinu is so compact and unobtrusive. If you are a Quinn player and are looking for a server on which to test your skills against other players, this little app will get you there in 2 mouse clicks. (Quinn is a tetris-like game with a beautiful human interface that enjoys a global following. Be careful, it is highly addictive) (Version 1.2.6)

RAZZ DVD Creator didn't. I ran it for over 5 hours and it was stuck on "Creating Title". It never did write anything on the DVD. All it did was make heat and run the fans on the Mac. DON"T BOTHER WITH THIS PROGRAM (Version 3.0)

RAZZ I've been running DVD Creator 3.0 for 3 hours now.... is it supposed to be this slow? I am converting an AVI to run on a DVD. The AVI is 700 MB and is in letterbox format. The resulting DVD is over 2GB. Since I am running in "evaluate" mode, DVD Creator is putting a watermark on the resulting video and it informs you of this up front. That's good. I suspect that after 3 hours run time, that it is putting a huge watermark on every frame. If it does that, and I'll know when it's done, then they lost the sale. I'll report back later to tell everyone how it turns out. (Version 3.0)

RAZZ This is a slick little program but it fails on file names that contain question marks and radio stations! Keep up the good work! (Version 1.4)

RAZZ Graphics: backgrounds are nice. Pieces are not very attractive. Neither are modifiable. Action: uncomfortable delay between pieces. No undo. Left-right-rotate motion is very responsive. Window is small by today's standards. Quinn sets the standard for games of this kind. (Version 1.1)

RAZZ This sure is a pretty program but the functionality is tortured. Take a look at IRCLE and see what a very powerful client can do. IRCLE is rather dated and the user interface could be improved but it is very solid. This program doesn't allow many IRC commands to be typed into the console. Why is it so restrictive? I also didn't find a way to get a full channel list. If it's there, it ain't obvious. Now, for you AIM and iChat chatters...this program is probably functional for you and maybe a tad confusing. RAZZ It blows up if the file folder contains too many files. Also, you are given the opportunity to delete n-1 files if n files are found. It might be nice to delete them all sometimes! A nice feature would be to sort the files by pathname or by size. (Version 0.4)

RagTime | Dec 13 2006 |
RAZZ This product was pretty good before Apple Pages was introduced. I converted to Pages and never looked back. Ragtime is overpriced for it's feature set. Support is timely but not very good. It may just be a language communications issue. Just get iWork and get on with it! (Version 6.0.1)

Opera | Jun 20 2006 |
RAZZ Opera is very snappy. It loads in about the same time as Safari and it seems to render pages slightly more quickly. There is a huge problem when running Java programs at Yahoo.com. DO NOT USE OPERA for playing games at Yahoo. It is aweful. Activity in windows stops. You appear to other players to have disappeared. You can't complete play sometimes and if you check another player's profile, you are done for. I strongly recommend Shiira as an alternative to Safari. Shiira is very fast and it handles everything I've thrown at it. (Version 9.0)

Blackjack Gold | May 16 2006 |
RAZZ First the good news: This game has an attractive interface and animation is almost a little too fast but generally good. The bad news: The trial period is too short and limited. The developer seems to have a deaf ear to this complaint. How can one assess the randomness of the shoe and the quality of the play of the other players with such a short period? I am further concerned about the deaf ear that the developer has to these concerns. These people are your potential customers. I argue that you won't have any customers if you continue your stubborn neglect of what people are telling you. You may not be out of business in a month, but you will not last long unless you listen to the voice of your customers - they are always right. (Version 1.2.4)

RAZZ It looks like this game was programmed in a half hour. The controls are poor, the feel of the game is nothing like the classic Tetris game and the graphics are very plain. The trial period last about 1 minute (not an exageration) after which the program begins to beg you to buy it. The developer wants $10 but it's not worth $0.10. My $0.02 (Version 2.0.0.1)

RAZZ GraphicConvertor continues to be a superlative value for graphics designers, artists and developers. Don't be led astray by singleminded complaints from one-issue users. This app is appreciated by tens of thousands of users world-wide. It is an essential tool in our toolkit. (Version 5.8.2)

Snard | Apr 10 2006 |
RAZZ Snard, Butler, Quicksilver and others are applications with tortured interfaces. They don't enhance the user experience, rather, they make it incomprensible for little value. I just want to ask, what were you thinking when you caused this catastrophe to happen???? Users, try out DragThing for an excellent example of a launcher program. You are the scanner though because DragThing doesn't comb through your entire hard drive, building indices and such as these programs do. I am not affiliated with the DragThing developers. I just know a sweet app when I see one and have been using it for 5 years. (Version 2.4.8)

EASER I've been a licensed owner of DragThing for longer than you, and I've yet to figure out how Butler meets even one single characteristic you ascribe to it. If you want to praise an application, fine. But don't condemn another on the basis of misguided information. (Version 2.6)

Ircle X | Mar 1 2006 |
RAZZ Ircle remains the best IRC client for the Mac. This baby installs and runs every time for me. Things I like: 1. It works reliably. 2. Access to IRC commands from the console. Most Mac IRC clients do not provide this or provide a very limited command capability. 3. Full DCC, Xserve, and CTCP capability 4. Video capability 5. Automated functions 6. Scripting 7. It's small footprint. Many IRC clients are bloated. Things I don't like: Too many windows to clutter the screen. On the other hand, I have a big screen so it doesn't bother me as much as when I had a smaller screen. Other clients go too far the other way by putting too much in one window, using tabs, etc. Maybe an option to use tabs would be nice. (Version 3.5a1)

MrDrum | Jan 5 2006 |
RAZZ This program has some potential but it has a lot of user interface and functional operation issues. User Interface: instrument selection is by number and not by instrument name. I don't know about you but I don't memorize 128 drums by their number. The buttons are not real Macintosh buttons. You have to move the mouse pointer off the button and then back onto the button before you click the mouse the second time. One may want to do this to toggle an instrument off and on. The "Bass" note selection process is pretty clumsy because you have to move this "icon of a keyboard" onto the beat that you want to play the note then select the key on the keyboard for the desired note. MrDrum then puts the number of the note on the beat - back to numbers again, and no way to change it. Why not just put an octave and note ? The number of beats is also very limited so you can't do any serious work. It's a toy and not a very good one at that. (Version 1.30)
