RC I just downloaded a copy and using it to download a graphics heavy site. The application quits after 5 min or so. It says this is a "fully functional demo" but is this "auto-quit" part of the demo? If so, how can I fully evaluate the program? As I wrote this "review" I already had to restart the program 3 times so that "5 min" interval is getting shorter. I may start looking for an alternative. Too bad HTTrack is not available for the Mac..... iMac G5, 2Ghz, 1GB RAM

RC The souped up original iMac (Bondi Blue) has a replacement 266 Mhz processor, 512 MB of RAM, a combo drive and a 120 GB HD. This is "souped up" for this machine. I never implied that I would be running Leopard on this. What I said was that I was running the latest Tiger on this even though this machine is supposedly unsupported for that version of the OS. Although my modifications were not drastic, It still runs Tiger just fine. I did have to take out the HD, use another "supported" machine to install Tiger and re-install the HD. Tedious but now I can run the lates version of Transmission (which is Tiger only) and use this as a dedicated bittorent machine. This is all what I wanted Tiger for. I don't really care if I dont get Core Image or Core Audio, I just want my software to run. If Apple did not put hardware checks in their OS and just posted minimum requirements, I would not have to have gone through all this rigamarole just to install Tiger. And hey, if my setup acts wonky, I have no cause to complain because my machine is "not supported" but at least I have the option to try.

RC Yup! And basically that is to sell more machines. Admittedly, Apple is conservative with their requirements but it is not set in stone. If this were the case, I would not be running 10.4.11 on a souped-up original iMac. Yes it is slow but I get to use it with software that will only work with Tiger Apple should post recommended specifications but not put hardware checks in the software.

RC Unfortunately, No. Even if you do unlock an iPhone, Verizon uses a different standard (CDMA) than AT&T and T-Mobile (GSM). Your verizon phone has the "SIM Chip" built in and is not removable. This is the same with Sprint/Metro PCS.

RC How difficult would it be to incorporate playback of Real Video files? Not just the old version but also the newer rmvb files. I have a lot of these files that I would like to be able to watch using Front Row (hence, they have to be playable in Quicktime). Thansk you for a great free product.

RC What "Law"? Apple's "General Accounting Principles"? BS!!! If there is a law then why have they not charged for any 10.X.X update. Or for that matter, security updates and every Airport, iTunes, Quicktime update etc. Apple knew this functionality was built into the machines and we already paid for it when we bought the machine. When the original airport first card came out, did it have WPA encryption? Did they charge for that when they put it in via a software update? Apple, why don't you just fess up and admit it. "You want this functionality, then pay for it. Stop treating your customers like idiots. Steve's RDF is on overdrive...... How would you like it if your car manufacturer said "You have your low beam headlights when you buy your car but if you want your high beams to work, that's extra". Guess who's paying for Apple's stock option scandal......

RC As the first (and only that I know of) application of this kind for the Mac, it does it pretty well. The demo version allows 10 hotsyncs and I'm almost finished with them and so far, no crashes. The app is also pretty fast (Macbook Core2Duo, 2 Ghz, 1 GB RAM). The layout is simple, easy to read. Installation is also simple as it consists of just the app and a conduit. The only thing missing for me is a way to export the data out of the application to a text file, database. One of the features that the Ad for this app points out is that you can delete messages on your Treo to free up memory; however, if you do this and accumulate new messages and re-sync, won't you just re-sync the old messages into the Treo again....or worse case, the old backed up messages in your mac be overwritten by the new ones? If this is not the case someone please let meknow as I am still hesitant to delete any messages on my treo. As it is though it is highly recommended.

RC Wow! You are just assuming we are all thieves? I use Office 2004 for Mac. My previous version was Word 5.5 and Excel 2.2. There really are no new significant features for word processing (for me) between these two versions. The ONLY reason I bought Office'04 was because I finally upgraded from OS 8 to OS X on a PPC Machine. If those older versions of those MS products worked with Tiger (and the coming Leopard) I'd still be using them. I now bought an Intel Mac. Are you telling me I really need to buy a new word processor and spreadsheet program when the old ones would suffice? This is why I also want a point release to UB. Because eventually, apple will abandon Rosetta (just like it abandoned Classic) and I don't want to buy "new" software when the old one still works. And yes, this new "activation feature", scares me because it gives M$ access to my machine and my personal info. Paying them for the right to use their software does not include this intrusion into my privacy.

RC I've tried this software in previous versions and it works as advertised and is stable (last used with 10.3.9) I've exchanged e-mails with the author and requested compatibility with the SMS application of the Treo 600 or the Messaging (SMS) application of the Treo 650. He did start to work on it for a while updating me on his progress but I suddenly stopped hearing from him. I know the developer busy and this app is only a "hobby" to him but I hope this is one feature he implements in the future. If you have any requests, e-mail him. he is very responsive.

I guess "Anonymous" commenting that they prefer it on their machine ("we prefer Sharity over Apple's implementation on our own computers") rather than Apple's own implemation is valid but WHY? Great software which actually does what is claims to do. Also, the interface is simple and very intuitive. 1. You have to have the foresight to actually take several pictures at different exposure settings 2. I don't care how steady you are, this is almost useless shooting freehand. You need a tripod 3. Only useful for "static" images or where the image on your frame does not change. Landscapes and Still lifes, great. Portraits, Iffy. Sports or taking pictures of kids, forget about it. But these are problems inherent in the shooting process itself NOT the software.

RC I agree with PMICHAEL, RMVB support would be great. As it is, no application (for the Mac) I know handles RMVB except for Real Player. Oh Yeah, as for conversion Apps I use, 90% iSquint, 10% Handbrake (for DVDs). This app is great beyond words.

RC Exactly what features does this add to EyeTV that make it worh the shareware fee? iCal integration? A remote for which you need other software and hardware? (most newer EyeTvs already have a remote built in) Playlists? I don't know. It just seems redundant to me Still, as a piece of software, I find the latest version quite stable and usable. I passed a battery-powered drill and a table saw at a half-price clearance sale today, and boy would I have loved to buy them! But of course I didn't buy them, because I knew I would almost never NEED them. That said, there are countless EyeTV users (especially those with an analog unit) who desperately need a way to control their cable box or satellite for a higher quality image and more channels -- iEye Captain is the ONLY way to do this, and I've had to work many hours with 3 different hardware developers to make this happen. Lots of people have databases to keep track of their recordings--- iEye Captain is the only way to get non-video data out of EyeTV without a painful cut & paste process. If you are even a moderate EyeTV user, you can find you quickly run out of hard drive space... again, iEye Captain is the only way to use more than one hard drive with EyeTV--- up to 7 drives. Many people have streaming devices that depend on aliases or symbolic links to stream to their devices. Especially with EyeTV 1's cryptic naming scheme, iEye Captain proves indipensible for this. Until EyeTV 2.0, iEye Captain was the only way to have playlists... And many users have 700-800 recordings at once--- the advanced search can be incredibly helpful-- for instance, finding which shows have been edited already and are ready to burn. I love EyeTV 2.0 -- but I sure wish I could sort my the episode name, which I very often need to do,,, So is it for everyone? No, definitely not... If someone just bought EyeTV to be like a Tivo, and they don't need to control a cable box or satellite, they may not find one thing useful. RC If the ability to bypass iTunes is worth $20 to you then by all means, try this product if not, there are several free alternatives out there. You can keep your video files anywhere on your hard drive. To install it in your iPod, just drag the file on the iPod listing in the playlist pane. No need to add it to your library just to install on your iPod. My testing shows that this app produces the same quality files and encodes a bit slower than Handbrake and iSquint. Podner converts more filetypes and is more tolerant of MPEG -1 (VCD, .DAT) encoded files (which to me justifies the shareware fee).
