PETER_EARTHMAN Did you report this to the DEV? FYI: there is a newer beta available when you mail the DEV. (beta 0.9.14). Don't know why he didn't make this version public. It fixes some problem I had. (Version 0.9.12d0)

Just a note, do you really have one incredible dock growing? or is that metaphoric? I had that, started to get annoying, use spotlight "APPLE+space" then search.. works like a treat. Seems to be better than any shareware software right now, Kudos to the developer for putting in effort and making it free! (Version 0.9.12d0)

R33C3 Yes i understand your point.. but some people are just that lazy or are so organized that they really only want one client that does all. More people use MSN and aim then skype, but i completely agree with you. I dont understand why they cannot get video support in microsoft messenger... its starting to annoy me :@ (Version 0.98)

BUCHO I'm just wondering what version of VLC you have installed (as Fairmount depends on VLC to do the actual decrypting)? (Version 1.0.4)

R33C3 Best ripping software out there. Theres two fairmount and this. Fairmount failed on some dvd's I triedm but Ripit seemed to copy them with no worries. Why fairmount failed i cannot say, as it uses VLC. But Ripit just cut straight through it, and created a incredible copy! Cheers, Reece (Version 1.2.12)

R33C3 Ripit is a very fine tool. It seems to work with every DVD that I throw at it. Its Fast, and it isn't too expensive to purchase. However, I am yet to see what RIPit can do that fairmount [Freeware] can't. Infact, since fairmount streams its media to VLC's decryption, it is 1. more reliable, 2. since VLC is regularly updated, the decrytion will also be up to date. I say, RIPIT, gives me a reason to purchase your product =] (Version 1.1.5)

For some, older movies you'll be able to get away with that, but for many modern discs -- "Stranger than Fiction," for example, but there are many, many others -- that approach won't work at all. You see, the manufacturers have for years been placing blocks of intentionally bad sectors within unused portions of the files, so that naive ripping techniques (like you describe) would hit them as they copy and error out, or best-case, take hours and hours to complete. More recently, with discs like "Leatherheads," there appear to be 40GB of files on the disc. Obviously, this is not actually the case, but the technique you describe would not be able to copy this movie without requiring 40GB on the target disc -- hardly acceptable. RipIt emulates a DVD player, down to the registers and instructions -- interpreting the movie's program to determine the sections of the files that are legally accessible to a real DVD player, copying blocks instead of playing them. By processing the disc in this way, we are guaranteed to copy everything that is playable and smoothly bypass all of the structural booby traps that are placed there by the DVD manufacturer. On over 35,000 unique discs, RipIt's success rate is better than 99.995%. (Version 1.1.5)

CORPSECORPS As i understand it, VLC's decryption is NOT regularly updated. It simply uses the library that's been around for quite some time. Encryption is NOT what makes newer discs harder to rip. The encryption must stay the same for compatibility. (Version 1.1.5)

RipIt | Jan 9 2009 |
RIPIT This is true. The encryption methods are a constant... otherwise, DVD players out in the field would break. With newer discs, the manufacturers have resorted to building "creatively broken" movies that have intentionally complicated structures, meant to confuse disc processing software. (Version 1.1.5)

RipIt | Jan 2 2009 |
R33C3 Fairmount rips the DVD as the ORIGINAL folders. Ripit uses the file .ripit. Which means you can't then copy it to a DVD. Since I don't really need to copy my DVD backups to a DVD, this doesnt really bother me. (Version 1.1.5)

MacTheRipper | Jan 2 2009 |
R33C3 Yes, the content stays on the disc. This no longer works with the newer DVD's. Theres errors that popup on a regular basis. If you want the latest mac the ripper, then you need to donate for it. However, you can download Fairmount, which pretty much does the same thing. It works with VLC, so as long as VLC gets updated so will fairmount :) (Version 2.6.6)

R33C3 When I first Installed Toast when i got my mac, it was 8.0.1 I found NO problems with it, it was working perfectly, even better than expected. I have recent;y intstalled 8.0.3 and it has been nothing but trouble. I installed Toast and was trying to encode a movie file as a dvd video. So I did what I normally did and went to dvd-video and started encoding. At around 5% an error came up saying "It has closed unexpectedly". I renistalled it, same error. Completely removed it, same error. I even Reformatted my mac, thats how desperate i was and still I am getting this error. (Version 8.0.3)
