Phone Amego
Oct 12 2009

PETER SICHEL  >Apple allows one to pair your iPhone to your Mac ... but not connect. Correct?

Not exactly, it depends on what you are trying to do.

Phone Amego opens an RFCOMM connection using the Handsfree Profile (HFP) just like a Bluetooth headset. From there it can detect when the phone rings, request call status, or instruct the phone to dial. In practice it works quite well. One limitation is you can't use a Bluetooth headset and Phone Amego at the same time.

While iPhone does not offer the same rich interface as other Bluetooth phones, it does just enough to provide onscreen callerID and click to dial from your Address Book.

Keyclick
Sep 28 2009

PETER SICHEL  There was a subtle timing related bug in Mac OS X Leopard that could cause a previously loaded sound file to no longer play. This did effect some users from time-to-time. The work around was to adjust the keyclick volume to force the sound file to reload.

I filed a bug report with Apple, and after some investigation they reported the bug would be fixed in Snow Leopard. I haven't encountered the problem since upgrading. As always, I welcome user reports. You can Email me directly at psichel "at" sustworks "dot" com.

Enjoy!

Phone Amego

PETER SICHEL  Phone Amego targets a broad range of Bluetooth phones and provides elegant on screen callerID as well as Address Book and Google Voice integration. Other apps in this category are similarly priced. Check it out.

PETER SICHEL  This appears to no longer be working. If you are looking for a Macintosh native alternative, I recently added an SNMP MIB Browser and SNMPd Config tool to IPNetMonitorX.

PasswordWallet
Mar 10 2009
*****

PETER SICHEL  This is my favorite password manager and I've tried several. The focus is on storing and organizing your passwords (or other sensitive data), and a clever yet general way to have the program type them for you when needed.

The work flow with Password wallet is to find the wallet item you want, and then press a button to copy or view the password, or take you to the corresponding website and type your username and password for you. Other password managers focus more on web browser integration, recognizing which password goes with the page you're currently browsing, but they trade-off some generality and simplicity as a result. PasswordWallet is simple, reliable, and gets the job done. The free iPhone version makes it convenient to keep your passwords or sensitive account numbers with you.

I've recommended this to several clients and they always love it.

Keyclick
Jan 16 2008

PETER SICHEL  Problem resolved!

The exclude list only displays the "process name" of applications that are currently running. To see other apps, you have to launch them first, and then "refresh" the list. Once you've selected a process, Keyclick will remember your selections between system restarts and application launches.

The reason is that Keyboard events are always targeted to a process, not applications stored on your hard drive. Choosing a process name from the list allows Keyclick to associate which process(es) it should not play sounds for.

Kind Regards,

- Peter

PETER SICHEL  I'd love to know what apps you're not seeing. You can write me directly at psichel "at" sustworks "dot" com.

Keyclick doesn't list apps with names like "Daemon" or "Driver" to make the list simpler.

IPNetMonitorX
Nov 13 2007

PETER SICHEL  IPNMx is displaying the sysctl data returned.

I have great interest in fixing the problem, but haven't had a way of reproducing it since it only appears on the AirPort interface of certain systems. Apple's Network Utility always reports the error count as 0 (possibly ignoring the bogus data from this device).

I'm expecting a new laptop shortly which may help in testing.

IPNetMonitorX
Nov 12 2007

PETER SICHEL  IPNetMonitorX does run natively on Leopard, but it appears some users encountered an "NSInternalInconsistencyException" from the Cocoa Frameworks. I have re-built the application using xCode 3.0 under Leopard to catch this exception (v2.1.4).

Keyclick
Jul 17 2007

PETER SICHEL  Keyclick is designed to be adjustable and offer a range of feedback options. Personally, I like subtle feedback. Just enough to confirm the computer received my input, whether typing, scrolling, or two finger scrolling on a laptop. When an application doesn't respond immediately or the way I expected, it's comforting to know the computer received my input, or I didn't generate the gesture I thought.

It seems some people love it, others are indifferent, and some have no use for it. It's not a one size fits all kind of thing.

Keyclick
Jul 12 2007

PETER SICHEL  I'm guessing you didn't actually update the previously running Keyclick server. After installing a new version, you must turn off Keyclick momentarily and "Show All" or quit System Preferences. This will stop any previous version of the Keyclick Server. If you then open the prefpane and turn keyclick back on, the new features should be available.

Alternatively, you can use Acitivity Monitor to stop the previous "KeyclickServer", or simply Restart your computer if that's easier.

Kind Regards,

- Peter

DocumentWallet
Jul 3 2007

PETER SICHEL  I've been using this for months and really like it. Document Wallet gets three key things right: (1) It integrates with TWAIN scanners for easy input; (2) Every document is saved as a PDF file, there's no lock-in or database compatibility issues; (3) It focuses on domain specific metadata to make your information easier to use.

I love Eagle Filer for general purpose filing, but Document Wallet is helping me clean out my over stuffed filing cabinets.

IPNetSentryX
May 18 2007

PETER SICHEL  As amazing as it may seem, some developers don't check here that often.

Why IPNetSentryX?

Unlike many other firewall products, IPNetSentryX is not simply a GUI front end to UNIX ipfw. It is a full in kernel filtering engine that offers features not available anywhere else and compliments Apple's built-in firewall (you can use both side-by-side if you wish).

Some unique features:

- Detailed logging including bandwidth accounting.

- Traffic Discovery to see the traffic on your network.

- Intrusion detector and triggers to limit unwanted abuse.

- Ethernet bridging to support transparent firewalls.

- TCP Rate limiting to throttle the rate of specific services.

- Network Kernel implimentation is wicked fast.

IPNetSentryX is not trying to compete with Apple's GUI to UNIX ipfw, it's an independent implementation offering capabilities others don't.

PETER SICHEL  Unfortunately, "Slow Keys" slows typing more than it helps for most typists.

"The Slow Keys feature is for people who may frequently hit keys accidentally. When Slow Keys is turned on, the computer will ignore quick or repeated key strokes, and will only register key presses of a certain length."

The choice of sounds and other features are also more limited.

Keyclick
Feb 15 2007

PETER SICHEL  It's easy enough to substitute your own sounds for the ones provided by deconstructing the application. In the Finder, you can "Show Package Contents" to bring up the Sounds folder inside KeyclickServer.app which is inside the Keyclic.prefpane .

To provide a User Interface for adding your own sounds might detract from the programs simplicity, but I'm open to specific suggestions. You can Email me using the contact information in the ReadMe.

PETER SICHEL  I'd love to hear from your directly if you have trouble getting IPNetTunerX to work as a Login Item. Version 1.6c4 writes to the system.log (view with Console.app) to show what settings are applied relative to other network startup events.

If you haven't already, please try setting both AirPorts to use computer-to-computer mode. I demoed this at Macworld earlier this month.
