PEDRO FARDILHA  What a nice little useful app this is!

One of those one trick ponies, but quite good on that trick.

There's not much more I could ask on it... except: (there's always an "except" isn't there? )

Some sort of option to select a specific folder to be marked as "default" and every time that we open iFolderer, it would re-check that folder for new items on it.

That way, I could make in run every so often and automate the import of files.

PEDRO FARDILHA  "What is your favorite feature of the DivX Player?"

Simple: Perian!!

Sorry!! couldn't resist :P

But actually, since version 7.1 still doesn't bring mkv encode (or faster decode) I think I'll keep using Perian to do the decoding part and VisualHub or one of it's "redux" siblings to those occasional encodings.

For my normal day to day encoding needs I', happy with mp4 (like when I want to upload to YouTube) so I have to agree that DivX is getting less and less relevant.

Best regards!

Pedro Fardilha

P.S.: I'll refrain myself to rate this version since I would be rating not the quality of the app by itself, but simply the usefulness that it has on my mac. and for the reasons described above, even if the app is really good, it just doesn't bring any kind of added usefulness to those already having Perian and one of the many free encoders installed on their computers.

Like I explained on another post above, I can live with the "no free upgrade to version 2" option.

It was the simple fact that first it upgrade itself to version 2 and only then, after my properly licensed version was gone, that I was told that I would have to pay if I wanted a fully working version again, that really disappointed me.

Take care.

PEDRO FARDILHA  Actually, if you notice I posted the link to a screenshot of the update info that i've got and nowhere it says it's a paid update.

Maybe you should get your facts straight before making this sort of comments.

And regarding you being "so tired of the whingers." I can see on your review history that you aren't quite the most cherished reviewer around here.

I do concur that we bought A software not THE developer.

But that doesn't mean that I have to accept (and agree) to whatever policy he decides to use on the way that he jumps version numbers.

You seem to know the developer so it's actually noble of you to defend him.

I, personally, can only speak about this specific attitude and in what I believe it's the MacUpdate spirit I'm giving my feed-back so that future costumers can, at least, be aware that this type of situation might happen again.

That being said, of course that I can accept that the lack of proper info on the update window was an innocent mistake so my apologies to the dev if I was harder than the situation deserved.

Take care.

PEDRO FARDILHA  I must say that I'm highly disappointed with Acorn upgrade tactics.

Having a 1.x valid license I wasn't expecting that a normal update was going to install a version that would simply make my license useless.

I should have known that something strange was going to happen since I was already running version version 1.5.3 and the update window told me that there were a new 1.5.3 version ready to install.

I think it's easy to understand my surprise when after the update I have a .0 version and if I want to keep using it I would have to pay the upgrade fee as soon as the trial period expires.

No warning of any kind, no chance to keep my old and valid 1.x version of the app, nothing!

I have praised this nice app on the past, but in no way I will tolerate this kind of tactics by it's developer.

Not only this upgrade process is not correct but also we are talking about someone who sold a really huge number of licenses thru the Macheist bundle deal and decided that instead of properly support those new costumers he would simply jump the version number to a 2.x and make them pay again.

I'm not a US citizen, so I don't know if according to US laws this could be considered a scam, but one thing I know:

It's not the proper or even decent way to run a business and as so I'm out!

I already deleted it from my Mac and I will be searching for decent replacements from developers that respect their clients.

Parallels Desktop
Aug 31 2009

PEDRO FARDILHA  Hi Kentr.

I cannot talk about your experience with them, I was simply giving mine.

For me, actually Parallels is the worst of the 3.

it's the one who gave me more trouble accessing my old PC devices like my serial Garmin GPS, among others.

And regarding VirtualBox, it installed just fine on my Macs and it runs without any problems.

Actually it's the one with the smallest performance penalty (again, I didn't do any type of extensive benchmarking, it's just my personal perspective considering the CPU charge that Activity Monitor show's when I have any of them doing the same type of tasks).

And frankly as long as you don't want do to more than you do with Parallels or Fusion, VirtualBox it's not complicated at all to install.

My reference to the manual was just in case you really want to push more for it, for instance I have VirtualBox running headless on one of my macs and I needed to check on the manual what was the command that I should use to make it run that way.

Last: the price! Right now I don't find anything on either Fusion or Parallels that could justify paying for either of them.

Best regards

Parallels Desktop
Aug 31 2009

"Back in the days" when virtualization for Mac was starting I tested both Parallels and VMWare Fusion.

Although they both were able to deliver a decent experience, I end up choosing the VMWare product.

My decision was made not because a specific killer feature but more for a dozen of small "things" of the way Parallels worked that simply were easier on Fusion.

Fast forward a little and something funny happened.

When Sun released VirtualBox for Mac (as a fully functional and free product) I decided to give it a try.

To my surprise it worked better than I was expecting.

Of course it could be a little rough on some edges, but it was growing fast so I decide to keep using VMWare Fusion as my "real" virtualization app but definitely I was going to keep testing the upcoming versions of VirtualBox.

Well, right now I still have a license valid for the latest Fusion version but I no longer use it. VirtualBox 3 does everything that I want and does it the way I want it to do.

You know what's funny? Good products with open source versions tend to gain a momentum around them and VirtualBox is no exception.

So, I might still be dependent of the other users on the forums to help me on specific problems that might appear but, on my opinion, since this is a dedicated community that really likes to help, I'm having a better support that I usually have with most paid programs.

My advice?

Download VirtualBox and give it a try.

The manual might look a little "geeky" but it's a really good and complete one.

Best regards

PEDRO FARDILHA  Hi, just to let you know that I fully agree with you.

Since I'm not from a country were English is a native language, I really need to be able to add the subtitles when converting a movie.

Thankfully I just decided to give a try to the latest version and compiled it from SVN.

Guess what I found there?

Not only does HandBrake will support (our) subtitle needs, extracting them from DVD, but also it accepts .srt.

I just did a quick test with the .srt option and it worked really well. Actually, since it properly embed the subtitles in a selectable form ("soft" burn instead of hard burn) I think this will quickly became THE app to convert movies with subtitles.

BannerZest, as the name implies, is targeted to those who need to, among other things, quickly do some banners.

As a lazy person who only makes flash banners out of necessity, I was quite interested in this app, but the more I read about it the more it surprises me.

How is it that BannerZest cannot support industry standards clickTAG or clickTARGET vars?

Let's face it, most of us out there who have to do banners, will integrate it with some sort of ad server, yet we have this banner making app that simply doesn't work with ad servers... strange indeed.

PEDRO FARDILHA  Every so often I like to test who's the market for making VRs on a mac.

I started "playing" with this using the good old Apple QTVR.

Back then it was more a toy project of mine, since no one on "the other" platform could see or use the those VRs... but man, it was a joy to make them.

Fast forward a dozen of years and another dozen apps (Cubic connect, Cubic maker, VR Worxs, etc) and even with the Quicktime plug-in having an almost decent market share on Windows (mainly thanks to iTunes) I still got some complains that having the VR tours dependent of such an "unknown" plug-in wasn't a good idea and somehow I just couldn't find myself using java to do things exactly how I wanted them to work.

Enter Pano2VR:

Pano2VR is pretty much all that I wanted on a VR app.

(Well, it would be EVERYTHING if it could do the stiching á la PTGUI or Huggin.)

So, what is that I like so much?

Simple, It can easily:

• convert the panoramas onto other formats (great to do some late retouch on photoshop);

• create hotspots to connect those dozens or defines panoramas;

• add my skins on the top of the tour (I only need to add on the first panorama, since the others can use the skin form there... now that's what I call making my life easier);

• add a (by now standard) pop-up map to show were on the tour we are;

• even the "radar" option is usefull sometimes, when I need the end user to know were he's facing to;

• connect specific areas to specific sounds, making them higher / lower depending of the distance of that place;

And finally export everything as a standard flash (.swf) file.

No, I'm in no ware related with this company.

I'm just a happy user who bought a license and believes that good things should be praised as much as bad things should be bashed.

For all of us "nomad" users out there that must pay premium price to ensure internet access thru a 3G / CDMA or similar connection, having this rogue background app downloading whatever it wants whenever it wants it's just a big nonsense.

As already mentioned here, it's as if MacRabbit (Espresso devs) are so worried not to clash with their other main app, CSSEdit, that they "forget" to add some usefull option on Espresso.

Probably the major absence is a visual CSS editor, as so I can not call this "one focused app".

I truly hope that they add some sort of CSS editor still on 1.x version otherwise my license will end up being a waste of money. PEDRO FARDILHA  I'm somewhat a game addict.

I like some games because they are entertaining, others because they help on giving some adrenaline rush and there are a really big list of reasons why I like a game.

But I think that this is the first time that I will say this about a game:

I like World of Goo because it's a really beautiful game.

From the cartoonish slightly "dark" graphic style to the music that helps on creating the mood I think this game was beautifully done.

( For some strange reason it reminds me Tim Burton's "The Nightmare before christmas" atmosphere )

Even knowing that the levels are timed (for score purposes only) I find myself taking some extra time and delaying, on purpose, the completion of them, just to spare some more time enjoying it.

In a world of standardized "fast food" this is a great "home cooked meal" that deserves to be tasted.

Thank you for making such a great game!

DVDRemaster Pro

PEDRO FARDILHA  I already rated DVDRemaster before, so I'm just going to give my impression of the new 5.x version.

I'm a long time user of both DVDRemaster and Handbrake and before this 5.x version I found myself using more Handbrake for 2 main reasons:

Handbrake has a nice queue option and their compression of dark scenes, when using 2-pass encoding, was slightly better than the one of DVDRemaster 4.x (although at the expense of more 30 ~ 45 minutes per compression).

DVDremaster makers (Metakine) has a long track of listening to their costumers and the evolution of this app is the proof of that.

Not only they implemented a queue on version 5, but also their re-compression engine is even better now and it shows, specially on dark scenes.

As an added bonus I like the fact that chapter markers are directly embedded on the new file.

So now I'm back to DVDRemaster.

I prefer the interface, the re-compression is faster than the one of Handbrake and it has all the features that I need.

Overall I'm quite pleased with it and I think that Metakine deserves to be properly praised for the good work done here and for being a company with such a good relation with their user.

KARSTEN@BRIKSOFTWARE.COM  You can use FileStorm to create disc images with a custom background and place the icons where they appear after in the final disc image. That makes it extremely convenient to create disc images like you can see in most applications.

If you need to create an installer using apple's package maker, you probably have to install files somewhere in the system. If you don't have to do that and just have a single application file that can be moved to the applications folder you should stick to a disc image.

If you use FileStorm for the disc image creation is up to you, as you can also do that with apple's Disk Utility app (google for it, there're plenty tutorials out there on how to do that) but the usability of FileStorm compared to using Disk Utility is so much better!

Clutch
Oct 26 2007

PEDRO FARDILHA  Seems a really great idea and for a 0.1 version it seems to be going the right way!!

A few questions, if that's ok:

Since I already have Transmission on my Mac, can't Clutch use it's engine and preferences?

This way they would be always in sync.

I prefer to use transmission when I'm at home, but being able to "control" Transmission without having to use VNC would be great.

This way (making them use the same prefs) I wouldn't have the problem of duplicating my downloads as I end up having when I tried Clutch.

All in all a really great start!

Keep up the good work.

TechTool Protogo
Oct 17 2007

PEDRO FARDILHA  I'll refrain myself from reviewing this right now, or probably I would be a little unfair.

But I can tell you one thing:

Let's just hope that you never need their support assistance!!

Protogo doesn't work on my new MacBook Pro so I went to their forum area.

There I read that they were aware of that and that I should contact the sales department.

Their sales department said that I should register myself on their website and AFTER that I needed to register my product.

Only then I could ask for help.

Ok, that made (some) sense so I went there and registered myself and guess what I found after that?

Protogo is NOT available to be registered.

Again I ask for help by email and they said they would register it for me.

Fine! I send my serial number as asked and my user name and waited for the registration process.

Guess what?

They gave me a new registration username but still no option to register Protogo and still no option to try to find out why I need help using my help application!!!

Let's see how it ends!

PEDRO FARDILHA  It's unbelievable how buggy Logitech software is.

They should buy SteerMouse and learn how to properly make a mouse driver.

It's revolting how bad they treat their Mac users.

If it wasn't for the already mentioned SteerMouse I would have stop using Logitech devices... and the idea that I had to pay for it just to be able to properly use my mouse isn't very acceptable either.

VMware Fusion
Aug 7 2007

PEDRO FARDILHA  Hello.

I'm aware that this is an external review from MacInTouch.com but i just would like to express my personal experience regarding VMWare Fusion and Ubuntu.

I use quite a lot that combination and frankly Fusion, on my opinion, works better than Parallels for that.

Not only VMWare's drivers allow me normally use the mouse on an entegrated way, but also to drag and drop from the Mac finder onto Ubuntu's desktop.

Also when using old serial devices (under WIndows), Fusion was a lot more easier to configure.

On Parallels I ended up using utilities from 3rd parties to allow me the properlly connect to those devices.

Well, i just thought that I should leave my 2 cents, since I've been using both for some time and in the end I bought Fusion using the 50% price rebate ;)

VMware Fusion
Aug 7 2007

PEDRO FARDILHA  Hello.

If your problem is with Logitech mac driver i highly recommend uninstalling it, since it's really bad.

After buying a new Logitech mouse and installing it I had nothing but problems related with their control center.

That included several kernel panics!!!

I decided to try third parties utilities and right now I'm using SteerMouse ( http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19058/steermouse ) without a single problem for more than 10 days.

If it keeps this way I'll buy this great generic driver.

So I'm no so sure if the blame is on the Fusion's side or Logitech one.

PEDRO FARDILHA  I like this.

I agree that the standard Apple's BOMArchiveHelper could grow a little up and this one goes that extra step.

What I don't like?

That every time that i click on something it "opens" on the background.

Since there's no icon on the Dock (what I think it's the right way. An "helper" doesn't need one) the first times I didn't even notice that it was working.

Has the same problem (as BOMArchiveHelper )expanding zip files create by the php zip option on some websites.

Stuffit expander opens those well though.

I'm just trying some domains management apps (and comparing to the "home brew" solution that I use right now".

One thing that i noticed was that every time that I open the "Edit Domain" pane and press "OK" (even without changing a single thing) all the info that was added automatically thru the "Update Domain Information" pane is gone.

Is this supposed to work this way?

It's not a "terrible" thing but I just think is not very practical either.

I do think this app is going the right path, but that "bug" (... ok, maybe not a bug but an "annoyance") and the fact that i cannot add/remove columns on the main list makes it an "almost there" app, but still not what I'm looking for.

Anyways I didn't pretend to start a war, just "protect open source", as I believe that it's worth to be protected and sometimes we have the tendency to forget that open source is a 2 way path. We receive something, but we have to understand that we'll be giving something also. (Usually on my case those are portuguese translations since I'm not a developer, just a web programmer ;) )

PEDRO FARDILHA  "iSquint can't correctly handle the decimal formating used in your country."

Well... at least now I can actually understand why it never worked on my mac.

I guess I'm not alone here, since i use the coma "," as do most countries in Europe.

Though luck for me.

CPRUITT  Hmmm... thats rough Pedro. Honestly I never understoon why other countries use commas though. Do you not use anything to separate large number blocks like thousands & millions? For example its proper in the US to use commas & decimals in numbers like so:

1,000,000.005

If Europe uses commas in place of the decimal it seems like it'd be far more difficult to read.

PEDRO FARDILHA  Well...

OK! To be honest we use a space to separate the blocks of large numbers.

I actually think it improve readability since this way instead of a visual artifact you can see the number as it it, just properly separated in blocks.

Instead of:

145,456,700.34

We use:

145 456 700,34

PEDRO FARDILHA  "dv stands for "Digital Video" geniuses. It is the pure form of video uncompressed. "

Well... actually:

"The sampled video is compressed using a Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), the same sort of compression used in motion-JPEG. However, DV's DCT allows for more local optimization (of quantizing tables) within the frame than do JPEG compressors, allowing for higher quality at the nominal 5:1 compression factor than a JPEG frame would show"

PEDRO FARDILHA  2.5.2 is, again, working just fine.

Cyberduck keeps his honor spot on my FTP apps.

I just don't give him a 5 start rate for 1 little thing:

I don't like how it "freezes" the windows (and the whole app) when deleting a large folder.

I need to wait until that operation finishes to be able to use any other open window.

Besides that... GREAT software!!!

PEDRO FARDILHA  My apologizes,

Somehow I didn't noticed that it was only for 10.4.

I'm using 10.3.9. since 10.4 freezes my dual G5.

KARL BARTEL  No problem.

If you like, you can try the build at ser.cs.tu-berlin.de/~karlb/castle-combat/Castle-Combat.app.zip , which should have fixed that particular problem. But I'm not sure that it's the only problem since I don't have a 10.3 installation at hand to verify.

KARL BARTEL  Did you get the file "Castle-Combat-0.8.0.app.zip"? For a short time a false version was linked from my site. Are you running Mac OS 10.4?

Thanks,
