PAULNOJUSTPAUL If you're running one of the 0.5 pre-releases and are comfortable with Terminal, try this: defaults write net.sf.cord SendWindowsKey 0 HTH and cheers. (Version 0.5b2)

PAULNOJUSTPAUL Nice unobtrusive utility that works as advertised. Especially impressed with the responsiveness of the developer. Tried loading it on an old G4 I have here for games and it wouldn't stay running. Sent them a support ticket from their website in the evening, had a reply and a bugfix the next morning. Can't ask for better than that! (Version 1.0.4)

PAULNOJUSTPAUL Every time a new version of Safari comes out, I try using it for day to day browsing, but unfortunately end up going back to Firefox (nttawwt) after a day or so because of the visual assault that is flash ads. This add-on changes that. It gets the job done - dare I say more elegantly than its Firefox colleague, and in combination with Safari Adblock means I'm still using Safari 4 beta as my default browser, and lovin' it! [insert obligatory "don't block ads for websites you want to support" advisory here. ;-)] (Version 1.4fc2)

iBank | Nov 18 2008 |
PAULNOJUSTPAUL I've stuck with version 2.3.13 (285) on Leopard and found it to be rock solid. I've not made the jump to v3 only because version 2 does everything I need, and the price combined with the less than ideal US/AU exchange rate make it hard for me to justify upgrading. No criticism intended, it's a great app, but I've already paid for v2. You can find the last versions of each major version (1.x, 2.x) if you scroll to the bottom of the iBank download page: http://www.iggsoftware.com/ibank/downloads.php (Version 3.3.1)

PAULNOJUSTPAUL Couldn't agree more, just found this app and it's by far the best YouTube browser/downloader I've seen yet. Intuitive, perfectly behaved, even has its own download manager. Definitely worth having a look if you ask me. (Version 2.0)

YourSQL | Oct 26 2008 |
PAULNOJUSTPAUL This is a really good, solid MySQL management app. I've previously been a CocoaMySQL fan but miffed a little by its occasional instability. I now use YourSQL daily at work to manage multiple dbs on multiple hosts. Nothing huge, but it easily and reliably does all I need. The column view of host -> db -> table is a really nice point of difference, too. You're never in any doubt over what db you're about to mess up. :-) (Version 1.8.0h)

VirtualBox | Oct 25 2008 |
PAULNOJUSTPAUL I'm hanging out for this too, unfortunately it doesn't look like it's there yet. From the FAQ: Although the manual claims 64-bit support for VirtualBox 2.0.0 this feature is not yet available for Mac OS X hosts. Nothing I could see in the change log suggests that's changed in later versions either. Still, for 32 bit guests it easily does everything I need. (Version 2.0.4)

PAULNOJUSTPAUL I think I still have my registration letter (yes, letter!) from this app's shareware days. This was a titan in its day, IMHO, and is still a lot of fun today. They get about a million bonus points in my book for open sourcing this one too. Andrew Welch and Ambrosia are an amazingly cool, talented bunch of people, and they to this day maintain that original spirit and do really great titles. I'd also recommend checking out Mars Rising and Deimos Rising, written by the very talented Dave Wareing. They give arcade games like Xevious, and Raiden a seriously good run for their money. OpenOffice.org | Oct 15 2008 |
PAULNOJUSTPAUL I've been using NeoOffice for a long while but this is a really good solid update to OOo, I'm going to give this a serious try again. Seems a whole lot let less sluggish and more polished than the last one I used. In case no-one's mentioned it here (sorry for the repeat if they have), if you go into preferences and disable Java runtime environment. You should see a pretty big performance improvement. VirtualBox | Oct 13 2008 |
PAULNOJUSTPAUL What Pietro said! I use XP very occasionally but frequently fire up throwaway redshirt[1] boxes to test different Linux distros. VirtualBox easily covers my needs. Also very impressed with the greatly increased network functionality in the latest release. [1] - Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, and Ensign Gomez all beam down to a planet. Who doesn't make it back? PAULNOJUSTPAUL This is much belated but I just have to give this app and its dev absolute full points. If you'll bear with me a minute I'll explain why. My dad died in early 2006 in another country. We went over for the funeral and took pictures with my wife's DSLR as a record. A couple of weeks after returning home our house was broken into and several bits of kit were knicked. The camera and the iBook the images were backed up on both went in the hit. They were replaceable, but the images were not. It was heartbreaking having to tell the rest of the family the images were lost. A couple of weeks later our local boys in blue did some above and beyond searching and matched a recently recovered camera with us. The flash card, alas, was blank. Fast forward a month. I vaguely recalled a mention of this utility on a Mac news site, so I thought I'd hunt it down and - just for a laugh - see if it could recover anything from the card. I pretty much broke down in tears when I saw it effortlessly recover pretty much all of the pics we'd taken off this erased flash card. Yes, I know that recovering data from media is not in this day rocket science, but it made a real, tangible difference to me and my family. I know I thanked you privately at the time, Henrik, but I thank you to this day for offering this app. To other readers out there, I'm sure (well, I simcerely HOPE) it will not have such a crucial role in your life, but if you're faced with having to recover flash cards or similar, do give this a try. Again, thank you Henrik. Please know that you made at least two generations of my family happy. (Version 4.10)

PAULNOJUSTPAUL This is a really capable, elegant, flexible password manager. If you're looking for an Address Book-like interface and a direct replacement for Web Confidential (don't get me wrong, WC still works fine!) then IMHO this is well worth a look. (Version 1.4)

VLC Media Player | Oct 12 2008 |
PAULNOJUSTPAUL The screencap is apt. "She may not look like much, kid..." This is to video that which GraphicConverter is to static images. It's been around for ages, reads almost every format out there, and is actively supported. What's not to like?! Seriously nice, capable piece of work if you ask me. (Version 0.9.4)

RapidWeaver | Oct 12 2008 |
PAULNOJUSTPAUL After using apps like Dreamweaver and (the excellent) NVU as well as specialised apps like iBlog (R.I.P.), happening upon RapidWeaver was both a puzzlement and a breath of fresh air. I can understand other reviewers rating this app lower, but I think that's because they were expecting it to be something it's not. It's not Dreamweaver, GoLive, or any of those "pro level" apps where you get to micro-manage everything. Instead it takes a refreshing approach of being as simple as you like, but retaining a veritable Alice in Wonderland rabbit-hole extensibility. I know (at a basic level) how to write HTML/CSS/XML in a text editor. Thing is I don't want to have to do that. I want to just pick a good, usable interface for my (paltry ;-) website, a basic layout, and just let the app worry about the details while I just add the content. RapidWeaver does this beautifully. They have a great support forum and are really pleasant/responsive to deal with too. That speaks worlds to me. Highly recommend taking a look. (Version 4.1.3)

PAULNOJUSTPAUL I'm a fan of the v1.x releases of this critter and applaud the developers for creating such an unobtrusive, elegant, and convenient interface to Cisco's VPM client. I use it almost daily. I really wish I could justify ponying up the dosh for v2 (and completely respect the developers wanting a return for their hard work) but since my work provides the Cisco VPN client app, is pretty anti-mac, and therefor would only cover the purchase if Hades was ice skating, I'll have to stick with v1. Sorry, devs! (Version 2.0.6)

RipIt | Oct 12 2008 |
PAULNOJUSTPAUL Holy cow, where did this app come from!? I usually rip my discs to avoid having to take them along with my laptop when traveling. MacTheRipper had been having more and more problems with current discs, notably Sony BMG releases, for some reason. RipIt, young though it is, sails right through these troublesome discs giving you a nice DVDplayer file to go with zero hassle. No wonder it has a circular saw as its icon. The disc animation is very cool too! Also, if the comments section here is anything to go by, the dev seems impressively responsive. Definitely recommend giving this one a good look! PAULNOJUSTPAUL Very sad to see Techspansion close its doors, VisualHub (and iSquint) are such fire & forget apps, and the developer has a really fun sense of humour. Thanks for all your great work, Tyler, all the best! (Version 1.34a)

Delicious Library | Oct 11 2008 |
PAULNOJUSTPAUL This app is just amazing. We have a pretty sizeable book collection (~1k or so) and this app just eats it for breakfast. The barcode recognition with a webcam is awesome. You almost just have to wave a book in the cams general direction and it'll pick it up! It's also tremendously elegant in how it displays your collections; I know of at least one person who was nudged over the edge towards switching to Mac OS X on seeing this app in action alone. GraphicConverter X | Oct 11 2008 |
PAULNOJUSTPAUL If you ask me, this app is the granddaddy of sanely priced graphics apps. I'm been hppily using it for at least five years now. As the name suggests, it'll read and convert pretty much any graphic type, and has a really capable feature set. I find it's the app I always reach for if I need to do any graphics cleaning and frying. Updates happen almost weekly, keeping it on top of its game. True, it may not have as much eye candy as its (much younger) competitors such as Pixelmator, but for my amatuer needs it's just fine. Thanks, Thorsten'n'co! (Version 6.2.1)

1Password | Oct 7 2008 |
PAULNOJUSTPAUL An excellent app that's only getting better with each release. The developers are likely the most attentive, responsive, capable bunch of people I've ever dealt with. When I was kicking the tyres on this app, among others, as a possible Web Confidential successor (no disrespect intended to Alco or WC, I've happily relied on it since 2000, but it's beginning to show its age) this was a standout. I don't meant that to sound pretentious, but changing password mgmt apps is a really big thing for me. When I couldn't work out how a feature worked I asked a (likely RTFM) n00b question in their forums. Within 24 hrs my query was not only capably answered by one of their help desk folk, I was also asked by one of the devs how I thought they could make it more intuitive. Many more examples of same are in plain evidence at their forums. It's an awesome level of support from a great bunch of people who have genuine enthusiasm about what they're doing and who they're helping. (Version 2.9b2)

Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection | Apr 13 2008 |
PAULNOJUSTPAUL While this does the job adequately and it is still technically a beta, I can't help but see it as a big step backwards from v1.0.3. Still no real multiple sessions (I don't think multiple saved sessions cuts it), and it lacks the speed and stability the earlier version had. Has MacBU just given up on this? They've shown us before they're capable of far better efforts. I hope the final version will make me eat those words, but for now I'd second Josh and say CoRD walks all over this. Either that or try RDC 1.0.3 with RDC Launcher. (Version 2.0b3)

Apple MacBook, MacBook Pro Keyboard Firmware | Feb 20 2008 |
PAULNOJUSTPAUL Outstanding! I thought I was going to have to get used to hitting the first key twice or thinking it was just my imagination. Applied the update earlier today and already have noticed that it's fixed this 'oh I'm sorry, what were you saying?' thing. Admittedly the miss-the-first-keystroke thing was just a minor annoyance for me, but very happy it's been fixed. (Version 1.0)

Stuffit Expander | Nov 24 2007 |
PAULNOJUSTPAUL This is one of those utils you (unfortunately) have to keep around for the odd legacy .sit archive. It does the job but geez I wish it wouldn't try to claim every single archive format as its own when you install it! That said, hats off to Raymond Lau, the (then) teenager who originally wrote StuffIt! all those years ago. 1.5.1 was the sweet spot IMHO. (Version 12.0.1)

PAULNOJUSTPAUL Very nice peace-of-mind utility that's in a class of its own. I first bought this (v1) as part of the MacUpdate/MacHeist bundle a little while back. Version 2 adds a nifty network monitor and a nice revamp to an already intuitive interface. 1.x users note: if your key begins with 32 you get this version as a free upgrade, thankya ObDev! PAULNOJUSTPAUL Outstanding app! Just getting into regexes and they were doing my head in. Reggy is brilliant in that it dynamically shows you how your regex will work (or not work :-) with your sample string. If you're struggling with regular expressions not quite working the way you expect, this is an excellent way to de-mystify the magic. Thanks Sam! (Version 1.1)
