RapidCart
Jun 12 2009
****.

ORION MK. V  I finally bit the bullet and bought RapidCart. The interface and options are good (some features are a bit vague until to try them out), the cart very slick and I much prefer it to PayLoom. No complaints at all and the updates for it are automatic (though you can choose if you want to install them) when you launch RW, so that's a nice feature over most RW plug-ins which require you to manually update. I did encounter a few glitches in display for mulit-column cart layouts where it would sometimes not put the items in order, but switching to 1-column again, then back to that multi-column seems to fix it -- must be a slight coding glitch. Also, I had zero crashes during the 3-4 hours I've used it, so that's a plus. All in all, very nice.

ORION MK. V  4.0 is running 100% stable, loading pages lickity split and exactly what I like a browser - simple and efficient. I use FireFox if I want extensibility and Opera for some cross-platform testing, but Safari works perfectly for a daily browsing needs. No sites so far -- including banking -- seem to have any issues with it.

ORION MK. V  Actually, OW is still evolving nicely -- to my surprise. If you want to keep up with Jones' at the cost of stability, here's where to find the latest dev build.

http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omniweb/download/sneakypeek/\

Version 6 seems to be in the works, so all is not dead in OmniLand. ;-) Since OmniWeb is now free (I paid for mine too), by all means upgrade/use the latest version.

OmniWeb
Feb 25 2009

ORION MK. V  OmniWeb is great. I got a license for an older version, but never renewed because there are just too many good FREE alternatives and between FireFox for compatibility and plug-ins, and Safari for speed and daily use, I just don't need another alternative, save for platform testing. I find that Opera, as funky as it's GUI is, is good for testing "roughly" how sites will look on PCs without having to start up my old PC.

So, sad as OW's imminent -- if not immediate -- demise is, I'm happy to see OmniGroup making the rational choice to focus on it's other fine apps.

There are many tools that do some of what GC does much better and GC's interface is only modestly evolved from the OS 9 days, but GC remains the single most complete "swiss army" tool there is if you don't want to $200+ dollars. $30 bucks is still a steal, though Photoshop Elements at over twice the price is a better photo tool and Photoshop CS3 is of course great if you want uber power. GC remains a steal for browsing photo galleries, slideshows and doing batch conversions.

ORION MK. V  This update installed and runs no prob. Numbers really is a nice "lite" version of a spreadsheets. It's no number crunching powerhouse, but light number and easy integration with layout/graphic elements it's quite slick. Not surprisingly, it cut-n-pastes into the other iWork apps beautifully, and it's great to have a cell-based tool that can be used for charts/tables that it's so focused on massive number crunching, but more on usability.

ORION MK. V  Installed and runs JUST FINE on my Intel iMac. Tied in with spotlight's exclude list I can "block" searching of directories or volumes without a problem and if you use the Google Updater it's easy to update and UNINSTALL various Google apps.

That said, Google Desktop is a bit redundant with Spotlight, but after the indexing is done it does run better, so no complaint there -- Spotlight can be quirky about what it chooses to show.

I've never been a fan of Apple's dashboard widgets, so the addition of Google Gadgets is useless to me, but I did try a few and the install and run just fine.

DOUG S.  Firstly because it's got better standards compliance than IE, 6 or 7 (7 is just as much of a nightmare, I don't care what Microsoft says) and is equal to Firefox. Yes, both Opera and Safari have better compliance. To designers that means that it's users will actually see the site the way we, the designer and developer, intended. That helps everyone.

Secondly, you listed browsers like Safari and Opera. According to the W3C each of those owns roughly 1.5% of net users today, same with Netscape. So if you want to play the "Get rid of it, because no one uses it" card, those two go too. Especially Opera as Safari and Netscape have legitimate reasons for being around other than just someone created them in the never-ending quest for a better browser. Others, such as Shiira, have even less and collectively barely even tie Safari.

Third, and this goes to my previous statement, show some respect! :P Netscape is the reason the net isn't so bad these days. It's the reason why things like Web Standards are happening. I'm not saying it's the only reason, but it was the first major browser to support them on any level. It helped spark a revolution in the software world to support things designers and developers need in order to make a user's experience not a nightmare.

Plus, any competition for IE is more than welcome as it's the only browser that makes designers and developers want to kill. Microsoft is single-handily holding back the web via it's pathetic excuse for a browser.

-Signed, your friendly neighbourhood web designer. ^.^

ONEBLESSEDGUY  No, he's correct. I knew almost nothing about web page development. I was using iWeb. The "rumor" was that iWeb would allow you to publish to a non-.Mac account. This rumor was just that.

This program is a very good, easy, WYSIWYG editor. I like the ease of it. However, .Mac is a HORRIBLE deal. If they would make iWeb like it was rumored to be I would most likely go back to it.

Placeholders rock. However, forced to having a .Mac account (Did I mention how horrible of a deal it is?) is worse than learning css and html. I'll take my learning curve with Rapidweaver.

Rapidweaver is excellent and you can do things that iWeb will never be able to do.

If you do get Rapidweaver get CSSedit too. I love it for seeing how people do their sites.

My 10 cents,

HERVé 5  the trouble you describe probably comes from the fact you are using the beta version. The nominal one (4560) just works fine with XP in coherence mode here.

If, as I understand, you want to use Parallels for professional testing and no extravagant PC gaming, I'd advise to just stick to the nominal version...

Adobe GoLive

ORION MK. V  I love Adobe GoLive. I've been a user since it was GoLive Cyberstudio and I'm actually surprised to see any upgrade after CS3 was released. That said, even with this upgrade, it's quite apparent GoLive isn't long for this world -- despite Adobe's claims --and Adobe's trying very hard to get people to switch to Dreamweaver if you read info at http://www.adobe.com/products/golive/. I think of GoLive less like Freehand -- which Adobe never did one thing with -- but more like PageMaker, which it did modestly upgrade a few times before relegating it to the dustbin.

While not a fan of Dreamweaver, I can see the writing's on the wall for me to either adapt to DW or become a 2nd class web developer.

That's why I'd rather pay enough for a superb piece of software to keep the developer around. Students write some great freeware (witness JunkMatcher...author was a Ph.D. candidate) but once they move on and get a paying job commensurate with their abilities, they lose interest and/or no longer have the time and motivation to continue.

SJK  Felix01: I agree with you even if paying for software doesn't guarantee its continued development. CodeTek VirtualDesktop Pro is the best and only example of Mac software I've purchased that I can remember becoming abandonware, unusable after upgrading to OS X 10.4. SplashID appeared on its way to gaining that status though SplashData recently released v4, with the Mac desktop version available later this year (presumably after 10.5 is released).

Anyway, I'd have no hesitation purchasing any C-Command Software products. If they seem a bit pricey it's important to realize the level and quality of support from Michael Tsai that's included.

ORION MK. V  Agreed. BoW may look a bit more primitive (not by much), but the gameplay/game balance is better and the price can't be beat.

ORION MK. V  Great app, but Google's blocking is annoying. Ah well, MSN will suffice.

ORION MK. V  Betas were solid, so it's great to see this awesome, feature-packed browser continue. Wonderfully multi-platform friendly, much like FireFox is.
