Bevy
Feb 23 2010

OAK  I am not experiencing your problems, sorry you are having them. I just wanted to tell you to contact the Developer directly at the 'Bevy" home page. He does not scan this site as often as he would like and may not see your question for a while. If you contact him, he is most responsive and helpful. I am sure you will get your answers.

Still a BIG Bevy fan!

OAK  If you want to launch your (or any) App really fast, try 'Bevy'. I use Bevy to launch 'Quicksilver'.

DoorStop X Security Suite
Oct 24 2009
****.

OAK  First, the price of the Suite is now $79.00, not the $69.00 listed above. That said, I must add that I would have liked to given this App a five-star rating--- It works (for the most part) like a charm. It is very easy to use. A user will never lack for information about the product; manuals/guides are everywhere. Support is rapid, first rate and personable. The only drawback for me is the fact that the 'Whois' search map of the "Who's There? Firewall Advisor" half of the Suite has never worked. It always displays a "cannot connect to server" notice. When I contacted the developer about this, I was told that they hoped to have this feature fixed in a future version.Great. How about my version, now? When I lay out seventy-nine dollars of my hard-earned money, I like what I purchased to work all the way, or at least be warned in advance that some features may not be available to me. Especially at the price charged.

Who's There?
Oct 24 2009

OAK  Overall this is an excellent App, except for one small thing: The 'Whois" map has never worked. It consistently displays a "cannot connect to server" notice. When one buys an App, one tends to expect all the features to work (especially at $29.00, or $79.00 for the full Security Suite of which this is a part). The developer hopes to have this problem fixed in a future update, but several months after pointing this out to them, it still does not work. It would certainly be nice to use all the features I paid for. Even once.

OAK  This App downloads perfectly well, but will not open in 10.4.11 on my Intel iMac; no matter how I try to launch it (Finder, App launcher, dragging to dock and using 'Open' in the pop-up menu).

OAK  What an excellent application! They do not come any easier to install and use. Simple, yet elegant. It does exactly what it says it does- allows one to change the screen color to preserve night vision (very handy for astronomers). At the same time, it permits those of us with very light-sensitive eyes to change the color to something less annoying. Imagine looking at this bright, white screen as a muted lavender; or whatever strikes one's fancy. It is also just fun to use. Try it!

OAK  Have you ever heard the old saw, "Never look a gift horse in the mouth"? Caffein is FREE. When one pays for an App one gets the right to complain about it.

Moon Phase
Sep 7 2009

OAK  I have downloaded this widget three different times in hope of finding a copy which works completely. The problem is that the "SHOW TEXT" option will not function for me. It will only read: "New moon in NaN hours" and "Full moon NaN hours ago". I contacted the developer and assume he is working on this. Despite this drawback, I really like this widget. I simply let it display without text---It looks neater that way. Excellent graphics! iMac5,1 running 10.4.11

OAK  That is odd. When I downloaded and opened VRS all I had to do was choose one of the twelve sample shows using the option button and push the arrow button on the icon (radio) face; then I was listening to "Hopalong Cassidy".- OK, I just downloaded and reinstalled VRS as before. With the same show playing (H.C.), I flipped the widget and hit the subscribe button to see what happens and also was directed to iTunes as were you. Apparently that subscribe button (if one isn't really subscribing) just adds the selected show to your iTunes library ( but only from those twelve free samples). If you really do want to subscribe, try the 'visit site'

button. If you just want the free part of the widget, stay on its front side.

OAK  I was attracted to this widget by the nifty 'cathedral radio' icon. It reminded me of the one on which I listened to these shows as a child. After opening VRS I discovered that it contains twelve sample shows (well chosen; excellent audio) along with a link to subscribe, at $7.95 per month, to unlimited library access. I feel that the developer needs to call this a Demo rather than Freeware. Calling it the latter, then offering to sell me 99% of it, smacks of 'Bait-and-Switch'. At approximately a hundred dollars a year, as much as I like old time radio, I will stick with the truly free stuff on iTunes Radio.

Bevy

OAK  Since my writing of the preceding comments, the developer has gone "above and beyond" in helping me resolve the difficulties that my iMac (Tiger 10.4.11) had in digesting this App. The alacrity with which he went to work on my problem was most gratifying. Bevy itself is phenomenal. Overall appearance and graphics make for eye-candy that looks good enough to eat. The workings are intuitive- It does not require a PhD to figure out how to use all the features. The user's guide and support leave no questions unanswered. It is very reasonably priced. This application is simply a pleasure to use.

Do yourself a favor- Take Bevy for a demo drive. I bet you will like it. In fact, have your credit card handy, because you will want to buy it as soon as you try it.

Based upon my latest experience I give Bevy five stars for the reasons stated. This is my honest opinion. Nobody asked, offered, or gave me anything to write it. I do not know the developer.

OAK  Thanks, Mr. Savelberg, for your reply. However, I guess I was not clear enough in my earlier comment... The problem does not start until after I have downloaded the Bevy .zip, opened it,put the App in my Applications folder and the icon in the dock. When I then click on the dock icon, a white page appears for three seconds- it says,"Welcome to Bevy--- 1 of 9". Then it disappears and the Bevy screen appears (it really does look impressive); but as soon as I click on the gear icon, or the menu bar icon, or the screen image, everything literally disappears and I am looking at my desktop, no Bevy in sight. Also, something I noticed the last time I tried to open Bevy... The menu bar stays in Finder, so I cannot access Bevy System Preferences. All the preceding happens both with version 1.0.3 (from MacUpdate) and with version 1.0.1 (from Apple Downloads). I have never seen this behavior before, even with other Apps downloaded about the same time. I am driving an iMac, 10.4.11. Any ideas?

OAK  I have downloaded the Demo of this App. twice now, once from MU and once from Apple Downloads. Both times I get a brief view of some kind of 'blank' information sheet (too brief a view to really see); then a screenshot of Bevy, showing all my Apps. If I click on anything, it all disappears, and I am looking at my desktop. The designer's site has no contact info for asking questions, so I am taking this route... Since I cannot get Bevy to work as a Demo, if I pay for it up front, will it all work then; or will it be more of the same?

PATRICK SAVELBERG  Bevy is not shown until :

- you click its icon in the dock

BROCK BRANDENBERG  Hi THEOAK. I'm sorry I don't frequent the comments often enough, so I missed your issue until now. I have not tested on Tiger 10.4, so you could be seeing something that I haven't encountered yet, but can fix. It sounds like Bevy is quitting for some unknown reason, so please email me at support at bergdesign dot com and I'll help you track down what's happening. Thanks, Brock Brandenberg
