NORBERT M. DOERNER MP3-Info and Snow Leopard: I am utterly disturbed as to why Apple has suddenly completely dropped CMM support in the shiny new Snow Leopard Cocoa Finder. One solution to keep using MP3-Info is the commercial PAthFinder from Cocoatech, as that runs CMMs rather nicely, even in Snow Leopard. But I am also working on a new verison of MP3-Info CMM that will look similar to the recently released GPS-Info 2.0, which had the same problem. If you are interested in beta testing MP3-Info 2.0, please contact me.

DOUG ENGELBART No context menu interface in SnowLeo? Then I'll never install OSX.6! Shame, Apple. (Well, maybe FinderPop will offer CMM integration in X.6.) (Version 2.0)

NORBERT M. DOERNER Please read the FAQ at http://www.cdfinder.de/en/en/faq.htmlit has an entry for that. Essentially, you had turned that feature on in Rocxio Toast, and you can turn if off there again. This is also covered with a screenshot in the extensive CDFinder Users Guide :-)

NORBERT M. DOERNER Funny you should use the word "denunciation". You give CDFinder a bad review based on "too many minimalist five stars reviews here...", I wonder what these reviewers think about your remarks... And Europe is no country, but one of the larger markets in the world... (Version 5.5)

NORBERT M. DOERNER Well, not posting a complete postal address and business identification is a business violation in Europe, to protect customers. The creators of the mentioned software seem to be located in Europe, from what little can be gathered on their web site, so they should have a complete identification on their web site. When you do business in the Internet, it is a good idea to know with whom you are dealing with, and not having a complete identification is a bit weird for a business... (Version 5.5)

NORBERT M. DOERNER If you simple delete the entire folder "GoogleSoftwareUpdate" in /Users/YourName/Library/Google/, then Google Earth 5.0 will keep on installing it again and again every time you launch it. If you, however, open the "GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle" in that folder by using the context menu "Show Package Contents", and then empty the folders "Frameworks", "MacOS", and "Resources" in the Contents folder of that bundle, Google Earth will be fooled and thinks that the Updater is still in place, although it won't be. Also make sure to delete the file "com.google.keystone.agent.plist" that this has placed in /Users/YourName/Library/LaunchAgents/ That way, you can now safely use Google Earth 5 without the highly inappropriate and insecure global updater. Google: DO NOT FORCE INSTALL such software on my system without my knowledge and permission. That is completely INACCEPTABLE!! If you think you find that cool, at least let us know what is installed where and why. That is totally not the case at this time. It is also a very stupid and insensitive idea of how this entire process is being done right now. Once people are used to global updaters that run anywhere without their knoweledge, it will be super easy for any spyware to be installed the same way, too, because people are used to that. MISTERE Thanks for this tip! If you want to comment on this issue or learn more about this update process that runs as ROOT please check this discussion: http://groups.google.com/group/google-earth-browser-plugin/browse_thread/thread/146882feca2788c3/951a4533372ba8ce#951a4533372ba8ce (Version 5.0.11337.1968 )

MISHA Or you can download the plug-in uninstaller here: http://earth-api-samples.googlecode.com/files/GoogleEarth-Plugin-Uninstaller.dmg Google said that they are going modify the installer to also give you the option of not installing it. No personal information is every captured or transmitted, and the connection to Google uses SSL for extra protection. Still, not a smart move on Google's part to do this, but not exactly malicious, either. (Version 5.0.11337.1968 )

Google Earth | Feb 3 2009 |
MISTERE The process runs as ROOT, completely unacceptable! What if every developer took this approach to updating their software? Your Mac would be brought to it's knees by all the software update processes (Version 5.0.11337.1968 )

Google Earth | Feb 3 2009 |
LEOOFBORG Mistere, a number of other 3rd party vendor processes run as root; like printer processes and VMWare. I'd be surprised if Google *didn't* put something in /Library and run as root. However- The question is should they have? And why? Having a background updater process that the user cannot control might be VERY hard on, say, users with broadband quotas or tethered [to a cell device]... I'm surprised that Google didn't consider this. (Version 5.0.11337.1968 )

GUNNI How does one go about deleting the contents of the files you noted? I am looking at them, but when I hit command/delete, nada. I am logged into my Mac in an administrator's account. Must I log out and log back Bob (Version 5.0.11337.1968 )

M-RICK It is very easy to forbid the installation of the updater : trash the contents of the GoogleSoftwareUpdate folder, then change all the rights to deny, and lock it. Google Earth will run normally and the folder will not be updated. (Version 5.0.11337.1968 )

NORBERT M. DOERNER "CDFinder and it's really bad interface" Mh, that is not very helpful. You may not like the interface, but others definitely do like it a lot. You are entitled to your opinion, of course, but that doesn't make the interface of CDFinder bad, you just don't like it. "The interface is in need of a redesign. Please, no more pop up windows" What exactly do you mean? Do you rather have the limited all-in-one window approach? Please be a little bit more specific!

"I've never been thrilled with this new dual paned interface" - We are sorry to hear that, as this two pane interface was one of the most requested new features of CDFinder 5, and that is something that all similar applications now also have... But don't worry, just turn it off by moving the divider all the way to the right, it will stick there and stay there, so you are back to the old interface quickly. "Also, my monitor is 24", 1920x1200 and when i set the type larger, the rows stay the same, cutting off the descenders or even the bottom portions of the characters" - You very likely want to increase the size of the icons, too, as that will increase the height of every column, accommodating any font size you need... Use the handy size slider for any view to accomplish that quickly. "The UI is kinda screwy" and "In any case, the UI needs work" - Uh, these are not very helpful hints ;-) What exactly don't you like? "Horribly slow disc scanning" - Actually, CDFinder is as fast as any other similar tool, as we have established a couple of times here already, but you really MUST make sure to have comparable settings, for example the creation of FileCheck values for every file of course take a long time, as does the reading of Finder comments, or file versions, or photo metadata, or photo thumbnails, or audio metadata. That is documented in detail in the CDFinder Users Guide, in chapter

Please turn off the cataloging of photo previews, photo metadata, and audio metadata when comparing CDFinder to DiskCatalogMaker. Both applications have roughly the same speed when used with similar settings, but CDFinder can read so much more additional data than DiskCatalogMaker, so make sure you use the proper settings for a real fair comparison Also, make sure you really use CDFinder 5.1, as that has yet again improved speed when cataloging said metadata. Then compare again and let us know fo the results! Thank you very much! (Version 5.1)

Thanks for your review! We are glad that you like CDFinder, and that you have taken your time to give us feedback! To 1: Yes, we are aware of that, but the amount of data to be searched can become very large very quickly, and that could make such a feature relatively slow (we have lots of customers using more than 5000 catalogs). But we are thinking about a solution for this. To 2: But you can! Just open the Get Info window for a catalog, and just right to the icon of it, you have a small menu that allows you to copy and paste icons. This also accepts icons copied from the Finders Get Info window :-) To 3: Use Command-Arrow-Up to go up one level, or use the Navigation entries in the Special menu to get back to the top of a volume (there will be a keystroke for that in CDFinder 5.1). Also, use the Tab key to quickly switch between the left and the right view. To 4: Yes, that would be really nice indeed. We are currently evaluating the new CoreAnimation abilities in Leopard to see what we can do (Apple had decided NOT to give developers the chance to use CoverFlow directly - yet) Again, thanks a lot for our excellent feedback!! Re 1: But you CAN turn it off! Just drag the divider between the two lists all the way to the right, and it will never come back. Yes, it is all about choice :-) Re 2: In what font size do you use Comic Sans, and what size does the list display have (hover with the mouse over the slider control for the view, and the size will appear in a help tag after a short while)? Re 3: That can be easily found in the CDFinder FAQ: The preference to turn off the automatic cataloging of freshly burned Roxio Toast disks is - in Roxio Toast! In the burner settings, you can quickly turn it on and off before you burn a disc.

NORBERT M. DOERNER Uh, blank areas, that sounds scary ;-) Well, as you already use CDFinder, you already know that CDFinder uses the header section of the Found Items window to display information about the volume that the selected item belongs to. That hasn't change since CDFinder 4.7. But of course, what does a savvy Mac user do if there are areas of unknown content? Yes, hover with the mouse over it. And after a short while, you get a nice yellow text explaining what would be seen there. Or, you could have a look at the comprehensive CDFinder Users Guide, as this also explains this quite well... But I still don't see how that would be un-Mac like? But you are right, CDFinder should select the first Found Item after finishing a Find operation, causing the scary blank areas to be filled with important information... (Version 5.0)

NORBERT M. DOERNER It is technically not possible to access the full amount of catalog data from Spotlight, the amount of data is just too much. So please just wait for CDFInder 4.5, as that version will allow you to search both your catalogs AND the local Spotlight data from one single nice place. CDFinder 4.5 is in private beta right now. NORBERT M. DOERNER Roadmap: We plan to add support for reading picture information later this year. That will contain picture sizes and color depths, as well as EXIF and IPTC meta data. As real picture previews require a lot of memory and disk space, we will have to create a very fast and powerful method of storing them first. But this is also planned, but no release time frame yet. Stay tuned!! (Version 4.1)
