Cyberduck

NICK LO  From the homepage of the site: "Donations. Free software is a matter of the users freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. If you find this program useful, please consider making a donation. It will help to make Cyberduck even better!". Is that REALLY "deceptive"? And is it really so deceptive to ask for a small donation to help the developer who has no doubt spent hours on this tool you get for nothing? Seriously?!

HTTP Client

****.

NICK LO  I tried this out while developing and debugging a web services application. What made it particularly useful was being able to save each request in a folder to be called (and potentially shared) as needed.

Language Switcher
Aug 20 2009

NICK LO  "This is implemented by going to the info window of the application, then deselecting all languages except the one you want the program to start in."

Actually you don't even need to do that. Set the order of your language preference in System Preferences > International > Language. If you then turn off the top one for an app in Get Info it will move down the list so e.g. if your top language was English followed by Spanish; Turning off English for that app will change it to Spanish.

Pico
Jun 13 2009

NICK LO  While I can see the connection between this software and its namesake "Pico della Mirandola", the name has already been used in a well known piece of software:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pico_(text_editor)

This seems an odd thing to do after the mocking the same developers other software got:

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/30526/majordomo

For also using an already established name:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Majordomo_(software)

The developer REALLY needs to Google before deciding on names. It's ridiculous to use existing and well known names like this.

Accounts
Apr 27 2009
***..

NICK LO  I originally started using Accounts to learn double-entry accounting so I could better understand the instructions my accountant gave me. Once I'd mastered that, I enjoyed its simplicity so much I started using it for my then sole-trader accounts. Unfortunately, despite assurances to the contrary from its developer, it seems to have ground slowly to a halt and is left missing features that make prolonged use difficult (search for example). Forum posts about its status were left unanswered and now the forum has been put on hold. I was really keen for this application to be given some life but in the end gave up and upgraded my dormant copy of Moneyworks (http://www.cognito.co.nz).

MYOB AccountEdge

NICK LO  You do know about Moneyworks from Cognito software (http://www.cognito.co.nz/) right? It's an NZ product (I think MYOB actually started as an Aus product):

Note there are several variations depending on your needs.

NICK LO  > For those of us who had to put up with Nick and I this far

Ha ha, yes I can see we could be at this for a while so I'll sign off reiterating that I don't think this developer is doing anything wrong providing a service that makes accessing public domain content easier. There are many many cases of people making a living in similar ways.

That said, I think it's time for the developer(s) to defend themselves as I'm not even a user!

NICK LO  >they don't tell you very clearly where the books are coming from).

Now I'm confused. Surely the following descriptions on this site make it quite clear that the books are "public domain":

"Find/download free public-domain books online."

"Voluminous finds free, public-domain books on the Internet, downloads them, formats them for easier reading, and manages the collection."

...not to mention the FAQ on their own site. Even the product by-line "Internet Librarian for Mac OS X 10.5" makes it clear that this isn't selling you the books themselves.

> Voluminous more like someone coming along and trying to charge you for the right to breathe.

Clearly you're just beginning to troll now. If that logic applies to this product, then does it apply to a product like OmniWeb which dares to charge for browsing the "public domain"?

http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omniweb/

> Frankly, I don't see the value added in Voluminous.

I think that was all you needed to say in the first place.

NICK LO  I partly follow Project Gutenberg's recently updated RSS feed. I rarely use it though as if I go to any of the pages I get a whole load of info that is overkill to my needs and a series of mirror links to get varying formats of the book. These links, at least in my experience, often fail. The point I'm making is that it's not as simple as you suggest and the point of this software (from my reading on its site) is to help you MANAGE your books.

Your argument against it is a bit like saying that our local public library provides books for free, therefore no-one should profit from selling the backpacks or bookshelves that are used to manage those books. In other words you are comparing apples and oranges.

Another example: There are millions of people who earn a living developing web applications using open-source software developed by volunteers. Is that wrong too?

Ironically, I've never used this software, but even a quick look over its website shows how unnecessary and poorly considered your point was.

SRS iWOW Premium

****.

NICK LO  Short review: You'll not want to use iTunes without this once you've tried it.

A small suggestion I did try and send to SRS Labs but their contact form submission failed, is to take the About and Help off the grey toolbar area.

When using iTunes and needing to bring the plug-in window into focus from behind iTunes I do what I do with other OS X applications and instinctively click the grey heading area. Unfortunately due to the small size this means I often hit the about or help menus which is frustrating and rarely what I'm after.

About and Help would be much better incorporated within the window perhaps below the main settings as they are rarely accessed.
