NAOH  The disadvantage with using Adobe's Flash plugin management website, is that it requires that you have a live Internet connection.

NAOH  Many thanks for that. It is good to have a clear idea of what can and can't be done.

Doing the serial port connection through terminal is an option, but hardly an ideal one.

I am hoping to find a tool that allows me to save a profile for each device I need to manage.

It can be a real headache to have to re-enter the details of the serial connection each and every time I need to use a serial connection. This is one reason ZTerm is still a tool I use heavily.

NTFS Mounter

NAOH  It would be interesting to know some things about Apple's implementation of the NTFS read/write capability.

Firstly: How does it interact with the NTFS-3G driver that runs under FUSE?

Secondly: How does it compare with other NTFS read/write capable drivers?

I am happy that Apple are not sitting still with regards to their support for other disk formats.

Hopefully they will re-implement support for ZFS as well.

As yet, I've not found an easy way to do that with Boxer.

Boxer is an attractive and easy way of launching the games, but as different games make different requirements demands of the processor, graphic cards and audio hardware Dapplegrey gives me the customisability that I need.

NAOH  As it is a cross-platform Java application, the look of the application is limited to what libraries are available to the developer on all the various platforms. (Usually SWING interface libraries)

As for it being PPC.

That's more of a limitation of how MacUpdate allows developers to specify the platform the applications are developed for.

Ideally an application could be defined as being 'Java'. That would probably eliminate a lot of confusion.

Little Disc+
Aug 7 2009

NAOH  I'm definitely considering Little Disc+ now that the developer has reduced the price from $39.95 to $24.95.

While a $15 difference isn't huge, I felt paying nearly $40 for something that is essentially a disc conversion utility was a bit steep.

Having said that, the functionality that Little Disc+ promises is something I could find myself needing quite regularly. Particularly with content that is stored on proprietary image formats.

One thing that I'd put on a wish-list for the future, would be compatibility with disc image formats like .mdf and similar which are usually unique to applications which don't exist on the Mac.

I've even come across content in a form of segmented .mdf format which doesn't seem to be converted properly with other conversion utilities that I've tried.

If the developer shows himself willing to continue developing and supporting this utility, then I for one will certainly be willing to pay the license fee.

Little Disc+

MAC912374  NAOH, Little Disc+ will not support MDF for now. We've been trying to support this disc image format created by Alcohol 120%. But a command-line tool for reading this format works for old disc image version(s). We could certainly make this function (converting old mdf disc images into ISO) available. But few users would find it useful. We would not misrepresent our product, making it look like it reads all versions of MDF.

We appreciate LEE123's opinion. Some people just want to attack software developers out of boredom or perhaps to earn respect from other users without even touching the application in the first place.

CoRD

*****

NAOH  CoRD has been a mainstay in my toolkit for many years now, for those times when I have to deal with Windows computers and servers.

Over the years I've seen it improve and become more refined.

However, one thing appears to have been a long standing oddity.

The icons that appear in the bottom left of the System Tray/toolbar (just to the right of the Start menu) have never drawn properly. It looks like the mask is drawn, but not the icon.

It's not a major issue, but it puzzles me that such an obvious issue hasn't been addressed in the many years that I've used CoRD.

Other than that, I've never had any major issues with CoRD at all.

Two thumbs up!

BBC iPlayer Downloader

NAOH  You might want to check if the BBC iPlayer website requires the viewer to click on a confirmation strip on the video clips that you are trying to download.

For example age restricted content gets a red strip across the bottom of the preview image. Unless the viewer clicks on the strip, the video won't download.

This has prevented me from successfully downloading a few videos in the past.

I don't know if it's something the developer will be able to work around.

NAOH  A great little utility that lets me watch the BBC programmes when it suits me.

However, I have noticed that it doesn't seem to be able to deal with age restricted content.

All age restricted content requires the viewer to confirm that they are older than the age limit, by clicking on a red strip that is placed across the bottom part of the preview still.

The iPlayer Grabber don't give me the option to confirm my age, and therefore it doesn't download the actual video content.

So, if you want to download something that is age restricted, I guess you're out of luck.

DiscLabel
Jun 17 2009
****.

NAOH  I'm one user who has actually found DiscLabel to be a pretty usable piece of software.

Although it has shortcomings and limitations, those are more than made up by the accuracy of the built-in templates.

I have used a few other CD/DVD labelling applications, and they all required me to endlessly tweak and adjust the settings when using the standard templates that were supposed to match various label templates, and even when printing directly onto discs.

DiscLabel just worked for me.

It could be that I was just lucky. Without any detailed information about why the other reviewers find this software doesn't meet their expectations, I can't comment on their reviews in any meaningful way.

As I mentioned earlier, DiscLabel isn't perfect.

One strange bit of behaviour I experienced with it, was when upgrading to a newer version, the colours of previously saved designs were inverted/corrupted.

Fortunately I didn't need those designs any more. If I had needed them, it would have been a huge inconvenience to repeat the work.

One item I would wish for, is the ability to save or export designs for archiving and exchange with others. (Exporting editable designs into a common interchange format would be ideal.)

Even with the shortcomings, I find myself returning to DiscLabel whenever I need to print labels onto optical media.

Sync'Em
Jun 12 2009

NAOH  Exchange 2007 has a whole host of changes from earlier versions when it comes to interoperability with third party software and systems.

The protocol that used to be required for full client access, MAPI, is being depreciated and gradually replaced with other technology that makes it a lot easier for third party applications to connect to Exchange.

In order to access older versions of Exchange in the same way, this software would have to implement a full MAPI connector.

Microsoft haven't been at all willing to license the MAPI protocol to third parties. Instead, any third party applications that need to connect to Exchange, such as the Blackberry Enterprise Server, would need to install several Exchange components from the Exchange install CD in order to work.

These components have only been written to work on Windows, so installing them on another OS isn't really an option.

However, since MAPI is no longer necessary with Exchange 2007, we will be seeing a lot more third party applications getting full and equal access.

Mail.app in Mac OS X 10.6 is a prime example.

iDefrag
Jun 7 2009

NAOH  It depends what you mean 'work with'.

The short answer is 'yes'. iDefrag will defragment the data on a RAID.

iDefrag will treat a RAID as just another disk.

The task of mirroring or striping the information on the disks is usually handled by the RAID controller or the disk drivers in the OS.

Since iDefrag doesn't take over from those, it can't see the inner workings of the RAID, and therefore is unaware of the exact nature of the disk.

Instead, like most disk defragmenting tools, it will look at the data blocks as they are presented by the OS, and work with that.

NAOH  This promises to be a huge time saver for me when I need to tidy up lists of email addresses and contacts.

One thing that would make it even more amazing, is if the author would make it work as part of an automated workflow. This could be done either through AppleScript or even by making Automator actions that integrate with Listomator.

Anyway, so far so good.

Actually, the approach the author has taken by using the clipboard as the way to import and export data from the tool can work pretty well with Automator. (I think AppleScript can use clipboard contents too, but I haven't had any reason to explore that aspect of AppleScript yet.)

QuitsApps
Feb 21 2009

NAOH  This app looks like a real timesaver for me as a system administrator.

I often have to update and reboot many Mac workstations at once, and being able to ensure all the apps have fully quit would save me lots of running around from Mac to Mac.

Quite often Adobe applications will seize up if I attempt to quit them all at once, and I end up having to force-quit them.

I'm not sure if this is already a feature, but it would be useful if QuitsApps were to have an option for force-quitting an application if it becomes unresponsive after a quit has been triggered.

(This could be due to a file needing to be saved, or the application seizing up, as mentioned earlier.)

Ideally QuitsApps would also be able to trigger a save of any open files, but I suspect the work involved would make it far more complicated to develop than it already is.

ChecksumJelly
Jan 17 2009

NAOH  This looks like a good way to checksum files.

However, I thought of something that might be good for a future version.

Could it be an idea to also provide a context-sensitive menu interface within the Finder?

For instance, if I wanted to compare the checksum with a file, I could copy the checksum value, and then right-click on the file that I want to check.

The context sensitive menu would offer to checksum the file, and because I have a value in the clipboard, the option to compare that value against the file would be available. (As there are different types of checksums, the option would need a sub-menu that specifies the type of checksum being used.)

Making this selection would trigger a background process, or a progress bar. Once the process is complete, a dialogue box would appear and specify if the checksum matched or not.

The same context sensitive menu could be used to generate a checksum, using the same set of sub-menus. This would be default behaviour when holding down a modifier key while engaging the context sensitive menu.

If the clipboard is empty, the full ChecksumJelly application would launch.

Although this might not be the direction intended for the application, it seemed a good enough idea to share.

NAOH  Even with the $59.99 upgrade, I'm not at all sure about what added value Toast 10 has over Toast 9 with the Blu-Ray plug-in.

It seems to me that Toast 10 is simply a branding exercise to allow Roxio to roll out a Pro version that has loads of bundled third party tools that have little or no value to anyone who isn't already using Toast as the core in their media workflow.

My impression is that Roxio are trying to reposition Toast into being a media workshop, rather than a disc authoring tool.

The features that are being added don't appeal to me, as they are things I can already do with other tools, or have no need for.

If Roxio were to provide improved integration into existing workflows, instead of trying to create yet another way to do the same things, I would be all ears.

Until I see some compelling features being added to Toast beyond what is already included in Toast 9, I'll stay put.

Parallels Desktop
Nov 13 2008

NAOH  Well, for all those out there who have had trouble migrating their virtual machines to Parallels Desktop 4, it appears the problem is at least in part due to VirtualPC. The issue is apparently mainly affecting virtual machines that have previously been migrated from VirtualPC.

According to a document on the Parallels KnowledgeBase, the solution involves replacing the mouse driver for the default Windows driver, and then restarting the computer before applying the Parallels tools again.

It appears to be the VirtualPC mouse drivers that refuse to budge which are causing the problem. (The VirtualPC Virtual Machine Additions won't have been removed from the system unless you have made a special effort to remove them prior to migrating the system to Parallels.)

The KnowledgeBase article can be found at this URL: http://kb.parallels.com/en/5735

Parallels Desktop
Nov 16 2008

JIMW  This review pointed me in the right direction. While many more error messages, some bogus, appeared, not covered in the knowledgeable article, ultimately due to this review I was able to actually get it running under a trial license after many frustrating hours.

Frankly, so far I do not find its performance to be significantly faster than Parallels 3. But then again I run a highly tuned 3.0GHZ machine with a 10K Velociraptor drive and 512 of VRAM.

FYI:The Velociraptor performance when rated is often compared to a Solid State Drive and other then adding RAM. At around $350, including the special mounting bracket, I find it to be the single most cost effective thing you can do to to speed of the performance of a Mac Pro tower machine.

The reason: MacOS is always writing page files do the hard drive. As such the speed of the hard drive becomes a performance limiting factor to your processors. A faster hard drive increases the speed that the page writing occurs and the less of a limiting factor to your processors performance it becomes.

Apple, like its competitors, uses the cheapest hard drive that will perform reliably for 3 years (Applecare Warranty), it can get for its stock drives. That gives them the best profit and return for their stockholders. From a companies perspective it just makes good business sense. The fact that it limits processor performance is irrelevant to them as they need to produce a competitively priced machine that people will buy and makes a good profit. If they used a Velociraptor as their stock drive they would have to add several hundred dollars to the machine which would reduce their sales. This is not smart idea from any companies perspective. Additionally Velciraptor size is only 300GB. This forces some users to have to buy a second drive to get their work done - professional video editors.

People tend to buy performance that they can see and feel and it is hard to appreciate the performance difference of a Velociraptor in a 15 minute demo on a showroom floor. But if you are serious about running Windows on a Mac, it does make a big difference.

Now, if only the brass who manage the Americas Army project would see that they could earn loads of brownie points by officially supporting the Mac.

Having said that, in my experience the Mac AA gaming community has far fewer people cheating and being abusive than the Windows based community.

NAOH  I have a similar experience to JIMW with regards to the Parallels tools not installing.

The issue appears to be with the installer running out of available space on the hard drive.

I have tried this on two separate virtual machines, and they both fail at the same point.

I suspect that the issue is either with the virtual disk not growing as it should when additional space is needed, or the installer having a fault of some type.

My intention is to try with a brand new installation of Windows, and see if the tools installer has problems then.

At the moment I would recommend that anyone who is upgrading waits for the next release, as they should have a fresh version of the tools then and the most glaring bugs should have been addressed.

(Yes, I guess I am an optimist.)

Circuit Defenders

NAOH  A quick note about something I just found out.

It turns out the status window for a selected turret can be moved. I hadn't tried dragging the title bar of the window.

I like that as a feature, but it would be quite nice if the window would automatically appear in a different location if I selected a turret that the window would have covered.

An alternative approach, would be to put status information outside the playing area, leaving a nice empty rectangle for the game to be played in. (Possibly a way to switch between display modes as some users are likely to prefer the floating window approach.)

Circuit Defenders
Oct 29 2008
****.

NAOH  After trying the demo of version 1.0.1 out, I am definitely hooked.

The game premise is wonderfully simple, but quickly mounts to a point where the game becomes a resource management challenge that appears insurmountable.

That is until you find a strategy that works on a particular map.

For instance maxing out all the upgrades on all your turrets isn't always the best way. A turret often works best when it only has to pay attention in one direction. That means that if your turret is close to the path the enemy will take, keep the range setting as short as you can get away with, but crank up the harm it can deal out, and the rate of fire.

While the game is very entertaining, I do have a few negatives to mention.

First: The music gets annoying very quickly, so it is a great mercy that it can be turned off. A choice of less annoying tunes would be a nice addition.

Second: The status window for the turrets sometimes obscures the turret that I want to keep an eye on. It would have been nice if the window could be moved, or even would avoid sitting on top of the chosen turret. In fact, I would like to be able to minimise and/or move all status screens so that I would be able to place turrets anywhere on the map that isn't already occupied by an object.

Third: It would be nice to also have a visual indicator that would appear instead of the voice when the voice is muted.

And finally, a suggestion.

It would be very handy if it were possible to limit the arc of fire on certain turrets. Possibly as a bonus upgrade that is only available after a certain point in the game. This would naturally make the game easier, but could work as a way to extend gameplay once the computer opponent becomes really tough.

All in all, I like Circuit Defenders a lot, but I feel it can still be improved.

NAOH  For what it's worth, Retrospect is still receiving commitment from EMC2.

However, the 'old' Retrospect will soon be retired and Retrospect X will take over. (That is what they plan to call it, according to the blog written by the chief developer.)

The plan is to integrate the Retrospect product into EMC2's other backup products.

A PDF that outlines the planned features can be found at the following link: http://www.emcinsignia.com/assets/ds_retrox_en.pdf

DONMONTALVO  That's bitter sweet news - we have recently migrated our clients and their satellite offices to Backup Exec. Over 40 copies of Retrospect retired...over 40 copies of Backup Exec deployed. No issues after dozens of test restores, not a hiccup with Backup Exec. I'm not happy about it, as it's one Windows application I needed to learn (or get better at as I was a bit familiar with it).

I wish EMC had been more open and up front about their road map. That they were not was enough to scare many of us away. Unfortunately once we move, it's hardly likely we would move back.

Is it possible to connect via a serial connection and modem?

I still have a lot of devices which must be managed via serial connections. Because of this, I'm still using ZTerm, which hasn't been developed for quite a few years.

I could do with an alternative and am hopeful that this may be it.

Once you have installed a serial driver just use terminal and the comand

substitute /dev/tty.Keyserial1 wit you actual serial device (use ls /dev/ to find its name...

Try man screen for more info on running screen (comes with OSX)

Doing the serial port connection through terminal is an option, but hardly an ideal one.

I am hoping to find a tool that allows me to save a profile for each device I need to manage.

It can be a real headache to have to re-enter the details of the serial connection each and every time I need to use a serial connection. This is one reason ZTerm is still a tool I use heavily.

NAOH  Hi Alex,

Many thanks for the reply.

I just thought I'd mention that while Safari will usually unpack .zip files, that's not the default behaviour for all browsers.

In fact, I usually disable any such behaviour on browsers that I use.

This is mainly to avoid the browser accidentally launching an application or script.

Anyway, thanks for making the change. It makes life a little easier.

By the way. You may want to check that Wenger and Victorinox, who are the companies that make Swiss Army Knives are OK about you using a picture of their product in your icon. (From the look of the logo on the knife I think it's a knife made by Victorinox.)

NAOH  I've found that when a .dmg file is hosted on a web server that doesn't know how to deal with that type of file, some browsers automatically add .zip to the end of the filename.

In those cases, I've just removed the .zip file extension and the file opens fine.

That may work in this instance.

NAOH  I just tried out Swiss Converter for the first time, and found it worked fine for me. (I'm using Mac OS X 10.5.4)

However, I do have a few comments to make.

Firstly: It would probably be a good idea for the developer to include the name of the application in the zip archive that we download. It took me a while to figure out that the file called '1.32.zip' was the Swiss Converter download. A filename such as 'SwissConverter_1.32.zip' would have been far easier to identify.

Secondly: The currency converter appears to have all the components to be a useful tool. However, it is let down by the fact that it needs the user to type in the exchange rate manually. This makes the conversion more of a hassle than most other currency converters.

Despite its rough edges I think this tool shows a lot of promise.

Scheduler

NAOH  RANDYHARRIS: I think you have missed out on the joys of cron.

cron is a scheduling utility that has been built into Mac OS X from the very first version.

The only thing keeping a lot of people from using cron, is the fact that it's a command line application.

However, over the years there have been graphical front ends to cron for Mac OS X that provide easier access.

Just search for cron on MacUpdate, and you'll find loads of them.

I'm not criticising Scheduler, it could quite possibly be capable of things that cron isn't.

However, I do think that your statement that the Mac has no scheduling capabilities beyond iCal is misinformed to the point of being erroneous and misleading.

NAOH  After playing Mountain Tanks for a while, I have thought of a few ways to add some variety and challenges to the game.

For instance by having a game mode where the player only has access to unlimited bombs rather than rockets.

This would mean having to work out the angle of the ground in front of the target as well as the time delay on the fuse.

Another suggestion would be to have games where either the elevation of the turret is fixed, or the power is fixed.

Also, when a players tank is hit, it might be an idea to make a random type of ammunition unavailable to that player for the following round.

As a final suggestion.

How about a map where the only light that is available, is the light from explosions or flares that the players themselves have to fire?

If I were to add one thing to my wishlist, it would be to have a feature that gradually fills up physical memory.

(Possibly with an indication of how much physical RAM is being used.)

That way I could use it to pinpoint intermittent faults in RAM as well.

Many thanks for a useful app.

NAOH  It works wonderfully for me.

I've managed to connect to a range of FTP servers.

(Not tried SSH yet.)

One thing that I would like added, is a way to allow FUSE to take control of NTFS volumes.

I have seen instructions on how to do this manually, but it really is too much hassle.

It would be great if there were a menu option to choose an NTFS volume that were mounted through the Mac OS X driver. Doing this would unmount the volume in question and re-mount it through FUSE.

The only two variables involved appear to be the volume name and the volume identifier. They should be easy enough to obtain from the OS.

Apart from that one wish, it's showing huge promise.

Keep up the good work!

NAOH  It seems Safari mistakenly downloads the file as a .dmg.bz2 file, rather than just a .dmg file.

This means that when you try to open it, the contents get hashed up by the unpacking process.

If you simply rename a Safari download to .dmg before opening, it opens fine.

The possibility is that the server the file has been hosted on, is configured to identify .dmg files as .bz2 in the MIME information. This would cause Safari to dutifully mark the file with the .bz2 file extension.

TrueDisc
Mar 3 2007

NAOH  I would like to know a little more how TrueDisc works.

From the description, it seems to create parity information in a separate area of the disk. This would indeed hold true to the claim of being able to recover the data on the disk, even with missing portions of data. It would also mean the data doesn't need to be saved in a particular format in order to be recoverable.

As it stands, the product description is a bit too full of 'marketing speak' for me to get a clear idea of what it actually does.

For a while I was wondering if it required me to buy special media, in order to use the software, rather than conventional CDs, DVDs or Blu-Ray disks.

If the product does work as I postulated above, then it is a very nice and easy way to allow recovery from optical media.

In any event, I think the software makers could make a little more technical information available to potential customers. Maybe on the website. That way we can make informed decisions about what we are actually buying.

TrueDisc
Mar 3 2007

We don't add parity information, but the technique is similar in spirit and comes out of cryptography. We'll soon have a much better description of the TrueDIsc technology on our website, hopefully within the next week. For now, the application does a reasonably good job of visualizing what TrueDisc does when you do a burn. It shows the major stages TrueDisc goes through with your file, what TrueDisc adds to the disc, and how that data is ultimately distributed on the disc.

We've also got some really cool animations for the Restore phase that weren't ready for the 1.0 release. We're hoping to get them out soon in a point release update. It's really cool to watch TrueDisc skip bad parts of the disc, reconstruct the data, and keep on going.

TrueDisc was originally designed for real-time data reconstruction in Blu-ray and HD-DVD video formats. (The target application was childrens DVDs and DVD rental services like Netflix, which receive a lot of DVD abuse. TrueDisc can virtually eliminate "bad" DVDs in these applications.) TrueDisc can be hardware accelerated in those formats, and in older formats (CD-R, DVD-R), with driver updates.

However, no special hardware (optical discs, burners, etc.) is required to use TrueDisc. In fact, TrueDisc works GREAT with cheap CD-Rs that drop sectors here and there without warning. With TrueDIsc, you can basically eliminate all of the usual "testing" that goes on when picking a batch of CD-Rs or DVD-Rs to use, and just use whatever's cheapest, letting TrueDisc get the data off correctly.

Thanks for your interest!

Addressbook X LDAP
Feb 16 2007

NAOH  This software appears to be the closest thing I have yet to see for something that I've been looking for.

Basically, a way to cache LDAP data from a parent LDAP server while offline.

At the moment there is no easy way to write emails to addresses which are on an LDAP directory while offline. I either have to sync up all the addresses into my address book in advance, or I have to guess the email addresses.

I'm not talking about an automated sync between the LDAP and Address Book.

Instead, I was hoping that LDAP lookups would happen in the normal way, but that they would go to a local copy of the LDAP data.

Also, in order to reduce the amount of data requiring to be cached, there could be ways of specifying the data to be stored.

It may seem like a bit of a niche feature, but I'm convinced that it would be taken for granted once it were available.

KBALLARD  The webcam view is of course slower than iChat. That's because iChat has actual video streaming, whereas Yahoo! has actual webcam. This means while iChat's video will be a lot smoother with higher fps, it's a 1-to-1 situation and requires a P2P connection. Yahoo!, while slower, lets you broadcast to many different people at once, and works even when you can't establish a P2P connection with your viewers. It's a bit of a different paradigm, and each have their strengths and weaknesses.
