MYSTERY TRAMP Shrook has become my default RSS reader. Part of that, I'll admit, is by default. Vienna isn't quite there yet and I'm not ready to pay for a reader, so that lets out a dozen other candidates. I like the way Shrook lets you cursor around the screen. I like it's four-paned interface, but I use a 21-inch monitor; it might stink on a much narrower monitor. And I like how it doesn't try to display Web pages and leaves that to a browser. I had some issues trying to set up my preferences. It crashed several times as I made changes, but once they were set up, Shrook has been solid.

MYSTERY TRAMP This app offers great promise, but it needs lots of polish. 1) We "save" data, we don't "write" it. Technically, the programmer might be right, but a lot of users will be confused at first (like me). 2) Font, font size, color and opacity settings take up prominent screen space and should be behind a menu. Most people will set these things once and forget them. 3) The startup routine is confusing. The software wants a database right up front, but it's slow to respond to the command to find one. 4) As a "digital filing system," it would be great if it could store external files, like scans and PDFs. Looking forward to future versions.

MYSTERY TRAMP One of the few positive things I remember about a job I had where I was moving files around a pre-networked office was that Norton Commander made the job a lot easier. muCommander does a good job of presenting a Norton Commander style presentation of your hard disk, and a lot more besides. You'll see lots of things in this app that you'll wish the Finder included.

MYSTERY TRAMP Quite possibly, this is a great app, but it needs more testing, at least on Snow Leopard. When the application runs, you get a big, lovely splash screen with the company logo and that's it. Only a single menu loads, which only allows the user to quit (the preferences command is grayed out). If you enter Expose, you'll find out that there's a dialog box complaining that a catalog file doesn't exist, but it's behind the splash screen so you can't dispatch it. The only option is to Force Quit. One other thing ... this app needs 227 MB on your hard drive. That's an awful lot of real estate. Just wish it worked.

MYSTERY TRAMP This is a pretty good word processor, certainly not a Pages or a Word, but a step up in many respects to TextEdit. Lots of useful features, like a live word count, access to Spotlight comments, a "snippets" drawer for commonly used data. You can save files as PDFs (which is a great step up from "printing" them as PDFs — I wish all Mac apps would do this. AppleScriptable. It has a great interface (I love just about all the MOApps) — although the icons on the format bar are a bit small to easily tell what they do. It doesn't appear to accept graphics, which is a bit of a bummer. Otherwise, though, a nice program. (Version 5.3)

APFELZ Thanks for your feedback :-) You can easily drag images directly onto the textview or add them by menu (Insert Image) - you can adjust the size if needed but of course you don't have the adjustmenst you know from Pages or Word :-) (Version 5.3)

Schreiben | Oct 7 2009 |
APFELZ this does not work for every app - but when dragged from Finder it will (of course this does not work with every file format (.txt can't handle images - but .rtfd will) (Version 5.3)

Schreiben | Oct 21 2009 |
RUBAIYAT You say you can adjust the image size. How? There seems to be no tool, item in the menus, inspector or toolbar to do this. The manual really needs a rewrite to actually include the obvious, it says very little of any use. As does the Help. (Version 5.4)

Schreiben | Oct 23 2009 |
APFELZ Well - of course the manual points that out :-) Just double click on image. (Version 5.4)

Schreiben | Oct 23 2009 |
RUBAIYAT Thanks for the tip, I tried it, but it is not at all Mac like to do it this way. Also I have just been through the manual 3 times again, beyond the multiple times I tried before and I can still see no reference how to handle graphics, let alone resize them. Just a few points about manual writing. 1. Break up the subject matter into logical units 2. Detail the interface as it appears on screen and in the menus. 3. Make sure your headings don't get orphaned from their subject matter on the next page. 5. Use a designer/writer if you can afford one. One who can see it with fresh eyes. 6. Lastly don't use your software if it is not up to it. (Version 5.4)

Schreiben | Oct 23 2009 |
APFELZ Drag and drop and directly click the object is not Mac-like? And you would pay the (heavy) difference if I get other people on board to do something that only is needed by one or two out of thousands not having any problems? Of course the app itself and and also the manual could be better, thats all a process - the first version even had no manual and this one really is much better than in earlier versions… And the next version the app is better and the manual etc. But even the best manual could not prevent that sometimes people don't look and don't try before they write comments about thinks supposed not to work or present, even if they all are there and working as expected :-) (BTW - the manual even has an own chapter about resizing images with own screenshot about that) (Version 5.4)

Schreiben | Oct 23 2009 |
RUBAIYAT You are making me wonder if there is ANOTHER manual that I am not aware of. I had no intention of making this confrontational, in fact bar this and the lack of columns there is a lot to like in Schreiben. If you like I can help with the better manual, no charge, I am curious to see how it all hangs together. As to the graphics resizing. Standard Mac interface would have you click once on the graphic, which would then show a box with handles on the corners which you then drag to the size you want, interactively. Your implementation with inline scroll bars and a slider that needs to update, is really odd and clumsy. May I suggest you listen to the Late Night Cocoa podcast "Margins, Metrics & Mac Look and Feel with Uli Kusterer". Programmers often aren't as multi-skilled as they think, and user interface design is an art as well as a science. (Version 5.4)

Apple iWork 09 | Sep 28 2009 |
MYSTERY TRAMP I use Pages and Numbers regularly and find them to be robust apps, able to perform all the tasks I've asked of them. Folks who are considering Microsoft Office should ponder if the extra features are necessary. If you need them, great. But if you're only buying the Microsoft name, you could be wasting your money. While Excel snobs might be able to point to a range of functions MS can do that iWork can't, I think they'd be very surprised at just how much Numbers can accomplish. And I use Word at work. It can do a great many things, 99 percent of which I'll never do. Having a word processor like Pages that's slim, trim and works like a charm would be a great asset.

MYSTERY TRAMP This comes off like a work in progress ... no help menu ... really poor data entry tools (for example, you can't tab from field to field) ... no/few basic budget calculations. For some people, a spreadsheet might seem like overkill, but they'd get more accomplished with a bad spreadsheet than they would with this.

GrupaDupa | Jul 14 2009 |
MYSTERY TRAMP In less than a minute, the software scanned my 55G hard disk and claims to have found more than 3000 duplicates. In demo mode it only presents two, so you're left wondering if it took that 57 seconds to find two duplicates, or 3000? You can't be sure. I don't object to limiting the number of files presented in demo mode, but two seems so severe that you won't get a good idea of the software's usefulness. Also, the software could significantly up its functionality if it gave more information. The user is given file names, which you then have to use Spotlight or some other file finder to determine which one to trash. Far better would be a report that gives duplicate file names, paths, size and date of last modification -- even if that adds time to scanning the hard disk. Guess you can't argue over the price, but I'd pay more if I got more. (Version 1.0.1)

MYSTERY TRAMP I'm not going to give this a rating because I just don't "get" Notebook. I don't like the notebook metaphor and I don't like that I MUST have either a spiral binding or a three-ring binder. No option for us trolls who just want a blank window. I don't like how it's decided there are fourteen things I can do with the software. I don't like how the To-Do list is pre-divided among five tasks it thinks I should be doing. I don't like how it can drag-n-drop virtually any file but it only "imports" one or two file types. I don't like how the sticky notes and sticky flags are cocked at an angle. And if I come across like a grouch, totally lacking whimsy, tell me when the last time you saw Macintosh software that needed an eight page installation guide? Now THAT is for the birds.

MYSTERY TRAMP This is not a high-powered app and shouldn't be judged like one. It opens text files with tabular data and displays it. It can sort the data and you can search for strings inside the data. Fairly rudimentary, but it does its job fairly well. I've been impressed with other Limit-Point utilities, and it's definitely neat to see the donation paying off as well as it does.

MYSTERY TRAMP Fine program. Crisp interface. It does an excellent job. I deal with a lot of files with ".ged" extension, and EagleFiler recognizes them as text files, and displays them correctly. Two quibbles. One, the help file says it reads Bean documents, but the ".bean" docs I've imported aren't displayed. Two, I think $40 is a little rich for my blood, but I may have to break down and bite the bullet.

HAL0THANE I agree. I'm adjusting to one or two small quirks of THL's UI, but overall, it's beautiful, it's fully-functional (and then some), and it's MOSTLY intuitive. Still, those who haven't used it can't see that from the spartan screen shot above. A screenie from, say, a busy super-mom or a middle manager might got much farther in selling this app. And, yes, there are some very good solutions out there are that much cheaper. Some are even free. I've tried most of them, and I've eventually stopped using them because they didn't fit my workflow. THL, well, it's going to come closer than anything else. The beauty of a free market is that competition drives innovation. Just as the previous poster said, if you think THL is too expensive, don't buy it. But if, like me, you find it to be the best in class, you'll happily fork over $39 for the MacHeist Bundle. ;) (Version 0.9.3.4b)

MYSTERY TRAMP This is a very nice upgrade. The Web pages it creates are among the best I've seen. The virtual globe function might finally live up to its promise. It already is probably the best genealogical product to handle photos. It's one weakness is it could use more data-handling tools. Otherwise, a fine update to a decent product.

MYSTERY TRAMP I haven't seen the feature you're asking about in a PC product, but you can "browse" from within MFT. You add a URL to the media pane and that URL can be google, for example. You can surf the web from within MFT. It's awkward, but it's doable. More likely, instead of google, you'd plug in a family research web site. (Version 5.3.5)

MYSTERY TRAMP The makers of MacFamilyTree have gone through public betas for at least the last two upgrades. During this upgrade, new versions were posted here at MacUpdate and on their web site. The software, however, did not notify users of new versions. So I guess in response to the couple of complaints, users could be delightfully oblivious to new versions if they chose to be.
