The third time took about a week. MUDFLAPPER So, this app gets a one-star review from you because it doesn't support a chip that hasn't been manufactured in four years? I have to say, I'm sick of all the whining and moaning from folks that chose not to join Apple's transition to Intel processors. I understand money is tight these days. But it's been FOUR YEARS people. MUDFLAPPER There is some, although not much, malware out there for OSX. Chances are none of us will ever have to deal with viruses, which is wonderful, and one of the many reasons I've always loved Macs so much. However, as a graphic designer, some clients require me to run anti-virus software. And, since our Windows-using friends out there have tens of thousands of viruses to deal with, us Mac users can easily pass these viruses on to PCs, even though our computers are completely immune. I find that naive, at best. You better stop using Google and every other search engine on the web, because they do the same thing. I've been using this developer's products for YEARS and I've never had a problem with them. My whopping TWO support requests were answered promptly, problems solved quickly. MUDFLAPPER That is not entirely true. Neither SafariStand nor Safari 3 can automatically save/load browser windows when quitting and restarting Safari. This is an indispensable feature that you don't even realize you need until Safari falls victim to the spinning beachball of death and you lose all 40 tabbed URLs that took you hours to research and find. I also keep Saft around for the ADD BOOKMARK HERE menu item added to every folder in the Bookmarks Bar. You don't have to hit CMD D and search for a location to save your url. It's so convenient--I love it. For ad blocking, I've always used PithHelmet. It's still the best. (Version 10.0.9)

MUDFLAPPER FontExplorer does that too, but sometimes, if the font in question is a system font, or a font used by Microsoft Office apps (for example) stuff starts crashing before a font manager gets a chance to warn you. It's a real pain in the ass. I had so many issues with Quark and bad fonts a couple years ago at work. And, of course, it only seemed to happen when there was a nearly-impossible-to-meet deadline. Ugh, bad times. (Version 1.2.3)

FontExplorer X Pro | May 7 2008 |
MUDFLAPPER Actually, fonts are notorious for crashing EVERYTHING. I used to have so many problems with corrupt fonts causing every app that used them to crash. Font Explorer is the most reliable, trouble-free font app for the Mac. Trust me. It's not the app causing the problems. Make sure you have deleted all other font app plugins. Use something like Font Doctor to diagnose and fix/remove corrupt fonts. Clean the all font caches using Font Explorer. Restart. If it was a font causing the problem, the problem will be gone. If it's still there, there is something wrong with your system. (Version 1.2.3)

It ranks up there with my favorite Mac applications of all time: Butler, Xtorrent, Adium, Cocktail, Alarm Clock, Meteorologist, Journler, Speed Download, Mac The Ripper, Super Duper. All of these apps improve the Mac user experience so much that it's hard to imagine computing without them. Never any problems with Overflow. Doesn't use too much precious memory. Easy on the eyes. Mac-like. Excellent stuff. (Version 2.5)

Xtorrent | Sep 12 2007 |
MUDFLAPPER I'm not sure if I've ever posted a perfect 5-star review before. This might be the first. The new Xtorrent (v1.1) is, for me, finally, perfect: • RSS subscriptions - keep track of new torrents automatically • Selective downloading - download only the files you want and nothing you don't (FINALLY!) • Drop dead gorgeous GUI - makes using the app an absolute joy. The reason you use a Mac is for its superior user experience. This is the same reason I use Xtorrent. • Built-in, customizable search - indispensable, I use it all the time, never use your browser to find torrents again. No other Mac torrent app works like this. • Speed and reliability - Xtorrent's download speeds have always been fast as hell for me, and it hasn't crashed once in at least a year, and I use it every single day. No spinning beachballs! • Easy to use - works the way a Mac app should, no need for a manual, it just works • Low CPU usage - at the moment I'm downloading 3 huge torrents while seeding 5 and the background CPU usage hasn't risen above 7.5% • Priced right - yeah, it's more expensive than any other Mac torrent app on the market, and I think it's worth every single penny. If you're complaining about paying for an app that helps you get stuff for free, there are other free options out there for you, but I've tried them all, and for me, they just don't measure up to Xtorrent. I paid for this app a long time ago (the lifetime upgrades option), and I have to say, along with Safari 3, RapidWeaver, Adium, Inquisitor, Path Finder and Butler, it's one of my favorite Mac apps of all time. I've never had any problems with it, besides a few crashes amore than a year ago when it was still pre 1.0. It's a pleasure to look at and use. (I'm sorry, but I do NOT want to look at the Java-based UI mess that is Azureus.) I've heard more than a few people complain about the customer support. I can't say I've ever had a bad experience with support because I've never had to contact the developer. If, in the future, I do need support, I'll post another review about it. I've heard a few folks complain that Xtorrent is banned by some trackers. Well, so is Transmission. Banning has never kept me from finding and downloading the torrents I want, whether I'm using Xtorrent OR Transmission, so this, for me at least, is not an issue. If you're in the market for a Mac torrent app and you're looking for a absolutely gorgeous looks-and-works-like-a-Mac-app-should, I say Xtorrent a try. I. Love. This. App. (Version 1.1v50)

MUDFLAPPER I really like this app. The UI is attractive. The search field is handy. The daemon does use too much memory, but you're not required to run it. In fact, I hardly ever use it. CleanApp works well without it. (Version 2.4)

MUDFLAPPER I love this app, but I've recently noticed, using Activity Monitor, that it's using upwards of 120MB of memory. Yes, real memory, not virtual memory. There's got to me a memory leak somewhere, right? Anyone else have this problem? (Version 1.4.6)

MUDFLAPPER Makes listening to music on my iMac enjoyable again. Shockingly, not a CPU hog. Totally recommended, especially for iMacs. One thing I'd love to see is support for AirTunes through an Airport Express so I could take advantage of iWow in my living room, wirelessly. Now we'd be talkin'. I'm also not a huge fan of the interface. I wish it was smaller, cleaner, more Leopard-y. Something like any GUI designed by David Watanabe or Peter Maurer. (Gorgeous stuff.) All in all, totally worth even the regular price. But, add the features I mentioned above and I'd be really impressed. (Version 1.1.8)

MUDFLAPPER I've been using Xtorrent every single day for months and months and I think it has only crashed once. Why don't we try to figure out why some of you are having problems with stability. 1) Are you running OS 10.4.10? 2) Are you running any hacks? 3) What do you have in your Login Items? 4) Have you tried running Xtorrent under another user? 5) What other apps are you running at the same time as Xtorrent? (Version 1.0v45)
| [ 4 Replies - Reply ] | |

Xtorrent | Jul 13 2007 |
3) Just a couple of standard items that every other piece of software can get along with. The crashes, the hangs on quitting, the unability to complete downloads that are already complete (a bug in v44) are all real bugs in Xtorrent, not because of a buggy environment. The complete lack of support to paying customers (zero response from developer, help, documentation etc) are real problems as well. (Besides that Xtorrent is far to quick on delete real files, it's very easy to delete by mistake when all you want is to remove a torrent from a list.) (Version 1.0v45)

Xtorrent | Jul 13 2007 |
MUDFLAPPER I don't think it's all Xtorrent's fault though, because if it was I'd be crashing all the time too. I keep my copy running all day, all night, nearly every day, and I never have these problems. So Xtorrent alone can't be the reason. I would think your next step is to create a new user, install Xtorrent under it, then try running it there and see if your problems continue. Oh, almost forgot, make sure you have no font issues. Corrupt fonts cause crashes constantly and it's a real pain in the ass. I use Linotype FontExplorer (free and awesome) to wrangle my font collection and clean the font caches occasionally. Also, make sure your system fonts folder only contains fonts installed by the Mac OS. Font Explorer has a function that takes care of that as well. Then I would execute the automation item with Onyx (also free and awesome) which will run daily, weekly and monthly maintenance scripts, clean caches, etc. (Version 1.0v45)

Xtorrent | Jul 13 2007 |
IGAUCHO I'm also confused by all the complaints about crashes. I use Xtorrent fairly regularly (maybe about once or twice a week) and I have never had a crash yet. Not even on the last beta versions when I first decided to try it out. It almost makes me wonder what people are doing to their Macs since I have experienced none of those problems on either of my machines (PPC and Intel). I will admit though that I did lose some torrents when upgrading once or twice to a new version. Sure it was an inconvenience. Aside from that Xtorrent is enjoyable to use and I feel that the developer is doing a decent job of working the bugs out. (Version 1.0v45)

Xtorrent | Jul 13 2007 |
MUDFLAPPER I have to agree iGaucho. And now that you mention it, I remember losing a couple of torrents after an upgrade, back in the pre 1.x days. Other than that, it's worked like a dream—a complete joy to use. However, there has got to be something going on here because the number of complaints about crashing has recently grown. I'm convinced there's some conflict between Xtorrent and a mystery application on these users' Macs. Maybe we're not having any problems because we're not running 1 tiny little app they happen to be running. It would just be cool to figure this out, that's all. (Version 1.0v45)

Xtorrent | Jul 13 2007 |
MUDFLAPPER People need to stop flat out lying about this app. It's not fair, it's totally misleading, especially to folks who don't care about all the geeky code details and just want to purchase a torrent app. No code was stolen for this app. The About Xtorrent menu item states "Xtorrent contains code from the libtransmission library." Transmission is open source, Xtorrent uses some of that code, and that's perfectly acceptable and perfectly legal. (Version 1.0v45)

MUDFLAPPER Safari 3 kept crashing on launch, even after disabling Speed Download's Safari plugin, then uninstalling Uno, Saft, PithHelmet and Safari Enhancer. Adobe InDesign CS4 | Jun 23 2006 |
MUDFLAPPER My Intel iMac is much, much faster than the dual 1.8 G5 I have at work. And, I'm sure the Mac Pros introduced in August will be even faster than the current iMacs. Adobe knew about the Intel switch LONG before we found out about it. They have no excuse. (Version 4.0.3)

WHAT THE? Hi, yes I agree. Though your comment is to and update... not and upgrade or new version... should it be Indesign CS3 version 5.... then it would be warranted. (Version 4.0.3)

Adobe InDesign CS4 | Jun 23 2006 |
I see your point. But with so many other apps updated to Universal, it angers me that the flagship Adobe products haven't been. Heck, if it wasn't for designers and graphic artists using Macs (almost ALL of them until quite recently), Adobe would've never made it out of the mid '90s. C'mon Adobe, show your faithful a little love. But, I guess that's not the point seeing as this is a small update. I do hope InDesign gets faster so I can kick Quark to the curb once and for all. Speed is just about the only reason I keep Quark around. (Version 4.0.3)

Adobe InDesign CS4 | Jun 24 2006 |
WHAT THE? Now I see your frustration... Quark. Sorry. Adobe being about all profit will want existing users and to pay for the Universal application rather than giving it away... it the 'nice' world the universal application would have been out by now. see your point... Adobe/Macromedia see profit. Will be interesting to see what they will launch. Personally I do like decent months between upgrades as they start to get a little expensive, I try to miss the 'odd' and pick 'even' though Illustrator 10 proved that wrong. (Version 4.0.3)

Steel | May 21 2006 |
MUDFLAPPER I tested every single last password organizer for the Mac over the last few months, and Steel came out on top. I was leaning towards Wallet because of it's snazzy interface and icons, but there were just too many hiccups. I got all excited when Waterfall said they were going to ad dotMac/iDisk syncing so I could have one password database that I could get to from any Mac with a copy of Wallet. Turns out, they only added an import/export feature to your iDisk--a complete waste of time. I want it to just WORK. Like a Mac. Steel, on the other hand, has been rock-solid since day one. It doesn't directly support dotMac syncing, but I've found a nifty workaround. Just save your database to a folder on your iDisk, and set the prefs to open that database automatically when launching Steel. Then, do the same with your copy at work or on your MacBook, make sure you sync your iDisk after saving your Steel database and BAM!--you're all set. Anyway, if you're looking for the best password organizer for OSX, this is probably it. (Version 1.1.5)

MUDFLAPPER Installation was painless. It works quite well. Just 2 complaints: 1) No shared folders. (Although I believe the last version just introduced that feature. Have to try that out) and 2) audio syncing. I use Swish for Flash text effects, and I noticed that the audio in my Swish movies doesn't sync to the frames any more when running Parallels. Unfortunately, this will keep me from purchasing Parallels. Once that problem is fixed, I'm ordering. He contacted me within hours and fixed the situation immediately. He updated Saft within a day of the 10.4.4 system update as well. All in all, a great investment.
