ForeverSave | Nov 20 2009 |
MRCHIPS MacZOT has ForeverSave on sale for $8.97 until 10 PM PST tonight. I checked it out and bought it. It appears to be very professionally done, but I'll reserve rating it until I've played with it some more... (Version 1.1.2)

I've been meaning to thank you for the tip on ClipMenu. I read your comment and tried it and I've been using it ever since! It was exactly what I was looking for - no eye candy but for my needs it's perfect. So thanks! (Version 1.5)

Yummy FTP | Oct 13 2009 |
MRCHIPS I had been using YummyFTP with Snow Leopard before this update with no problems. This is another example of software that "just works." It's always there when I need to upload or download from one of our servers, supports easy "drag & drop," shows you exactly what's happening during an operation, and is generally very easy to use. Highly recommended! (Version 1.8)

Island Racer | Oct 6 2009 |
MRCHIPS I downloaded IslandRacer (haven't tried running it, tho, but the screenshots on the web site look interesting). I wondered as you did about it being PPC only - didn't make sense. When I did "Get Info" on the app it indicated that it's Universal, so I suspect that saying it's PPC only is a mistake. MacUpdate needs to correct that.

Neutrino | Sep 11 2009 |
MRCHIPS I am in love with this app (don't tell my wife...:)! It isn't just the many ways Neutrino can manipulate the sound, or the iTunes integration, or video support, or the animations, or AU plug-in capability, or its ease of use. It is ALL that PLUS it is just gorgeous looking (PLEASE don't tell my wife!)... I've used lots of audio apps over the years, many with some of the same audio capabilities, but for pure joy of use Neutrino has them all beat! I am amazed by the attention to detail I see in the interface, and it makes it all so easy to use . Neutrino is the Scrivener of audio applications!

uBar | Sep 9 2009 |
MRCHIPS Alright, I'm an idiot. I went back to fantasktik to re-familiarize myself with it. Either it's been updated since I last used it or I've forgotten some important points, but it is better than I remembered. For one thing, I can put it at the bottom of the screen instead of the top. And I can turn off window previews if I want (but at the bottom it's not so obtrusive). It also displays multiple windows, although they're side-by-side and do take up more space. And I still can't see how I can have a "double-decker" arrangement of window references, which might become an issue with window name legibility if I have a lot of apps/windows open. Another thing in fantasktik's favor - I can put it in either monitor's screen, so it can be really out of the way if that's what I want. I do vaguely remember it being somewhat of a memory hog. But I suspect that's also true of uBar, so maybe that's a push. Definitely more to think about here... But I still like the fact that we have some choices! (Version 1.0.4)

uBar | Sep 9 2009 |
MRCHIPS I bought and have used fantasktik. It's a good app with a responsive developer and is, as you've said, similar in function to uBar with some extra features. I stopped using it, however, because it sort of "gets in the way" since it sits just below the menu bar at the top of the screen. The window previews would jump out when all I wanted was to select a menu bar item. I also don't think it can be made "double-decker" (two or more rows) like uBar can. I have six "spaces" and keep lots of windows open all the time, going back-and-forth between different work spaces. Fantasktik had trouble showing all those window references (they'd get too "crushed together"), while uBar only shows one reference when you have multiple windows open for the same app. uBar will show the "parent" reference (like Safari) with a number at the left to show how many windows are "owned" by that parent. Clicking the "button" will display the individual window names and you can just mouse and click on the window you want. If the window is in a different "space" uBar can switch you to that space, too. So, I just kind of like the implementation better. Not to mention that you can "Quick Launch" your most-used apps easily, too. But fantasktik does have the edge when it comes to being able to preview a window before selecting it. It is a very nice program and I'm sure some of the issues I've mentioned will be addressed in the future. It's so nice to have choices! :) (Version 1.0.4)

uBar | Sep 6 2009 |
MRCHIPS I've been watching uBar's progress over the last couple of weeks (since 1.0 came out). I must say I'm impressed with what this developer has been able to do in that short time. I've spent a little time talking with him and have great expectations for the future of this little gem of an app. I like the way it combines aspects of the dock and other third-party programs to provide an easy way to launch and access programs in whatever space they're in. The developer is eager and open to all suggestions for new features - and what he has planned already will make this a truly great tool. For those who love the dock, fine. It is a reasonable way to implement program access. But uBar is another, and I think in some aspects superior, way. But to each their own... Try it, you might just like it! ;-) (Version 1.0.3)

1Password | Aug 11 2009 |
MRCHIPS I'll second that! I'd just finished rebooting after installing Safari 4.0.3 and noticed no "1P" icon on the toolbar. Then I looked here and saw a new version of 1Password had just appeared. Downloaded and put in the Apps folder, relaunched Safari and all's well! Thanks guys - can't wait for v3!!! (Version 2.9.23)

MRCHIPS This is one of those programs that "runs in the background" and therefore is seldom noticed. It just works! But it's saved my bacon on more than one occasion when a site or blog went down. It pretty much just works out of the box - not hard to figure out at all. Also, I've never had an issue with it. But the developer has a good rep so I suspect I'd have no problem getting help if I needed it. (Version 2.5.2)

Screenflick | Nov 27 2008 |
MRCHIPS This is an excellent screen capture/record app with an active, engaged developer. The GUI is intuitive and offers many options. The recorded screen cast is of high quality. I made a simple tutorial video including system and microphone audio which lasted 4:20 minutes and the .mov file was only 52 MB - and this was with a full-screen capture of 1920x1200 pixels! Screenflick supports multiple monitors (record on one monitor while reading your tutorial "notes" on the other), can hide your desktop, and will use a custom background if you want. Recordings are automatically saved in full-resolution, but you can specify compression, quality, etc, for the .mov file you output. This is similar to the way Screenflow works and is a wonderful feature. The developer has indicated more features will be added after the new year. I can't wait! :) All-in-all a terrific value! SonicMood | Aug 19 2008 |
MRCHIPS " It's like having my own personal "Hearts of Space," only without the annoying voice-overs." I admit to being a "Hearts of Space," fan too :) Thank you for your kind comments! The next version should be out soon. I've tried to improve the "edit" window so that it's a bit easier to understand and use. Modifying and making new Moods can be a bit daunting at first!

Smart Scroll | Mar 13 2008 |
MRCHIPS After I upgraded to Leopard, SmartScroll stopped working. It's been some time coming but I'm happy to report that v2.8 is working fine on my computer now. The previous release had a few issues - it sort of worked... So far v2.8 is great! Thanks to the developer for taking the time to get it working on Leopard! I really missed it! (Version 2.8)

Overflow | Sep 19 2007 |
MRCHIPS I've tried many app launcher programs and never found one that fit the way I worked until I found Overflow. It is so easy to use and so unobtrusive. I recently bought LaunchBar, which many people love. But I can't seem to remember the names of files, etc. Overflow shows the icons of the files (with the names below) and the files (apps) can be organized into categories accessible on tabbed pages. I just hit the hotkey, and click the icon of the app I want to launch. This update includes one feature I really wanted. Now you can select (in preferences) to have Overflow appear at your cursor location. Another second saved! :) Thanks, Dan! And I've never had a problem with it, it just works. (Version 2.5)

Meteorologist | Sep 4 2007 |
MRCHIPS I forgot to mention in my previous reply that I'd noticed Meteorologist was using something between 40 and 50 MB when I checked before the restart. But it had been running for about a week before that so there might be some slow leak... I've just tried clicking a few things on its menu and can get the "Real Memory" to go up to about 30 MB, but it goes back again. It seems the floor now is around 26 to 27 MB and is stable there... "Virtual Memory" is at 370.13 MB (was 368.03 MB in my previous post), so not much change there... I'm going to keep my eye on this for a few days, but so far it seems ok. BTW this is still with v1.4.6 but based on these results I think I'll go ahead and try v1.4.7. Thanks for the feedback! (Version 1.4.7)

Meteorologist | Sep 3 2007 |
MRCHIPS I'm running Meteorologist v1.4.6 still and Activity Monitor reports Meteorologist is using 23.28 MB of Real Memory and 368.03 MB of Virtual Memory. That's about where it was roughly 9 hours ago when I restarted my Mac (for an unrelated reason). I'm running on a Mac Pro 2.66GHz with 10.4.10 (Version 1.4.7)

MRCHIPS I've been using Versomatic since last November (about 3 months) and it's been working fine. Its operation is unobtrusive - I forget it's there... You can specify which folders it should monitor and how much disk space it should use for the backups. I've only needed to recover an earlier version once, but I was able to look back thru quite a few versions to find the one I wanted (an earlier version of a program I was working on that had some code I'd later deleted...). So, for me, it does what I wanted. (Version 1.0.1)
