PS3 Media Server | May 22 2009 |
MR.ASH Very good mediaserver software indeed (and for free) but it has some annoying behaviour: Transcoding of .mkv videos won't work at all. Mencoder always crashes when i try to trancode a .mkv video with my PS3. I'm using OSX 10.5.7. No iTunes/iPhoto intergration. PMS dosen't offer any iTunes, iPhoto or iLive integration. This way it's impossible to access my media in iTunes, iPhoto or Aperture libraries. Except ot the transcoding feature (which is not working at all) Nullriver MediaLink offers full iTunes, iPhoto and Aperture integration and is worth the 20$ for license. (Version 1.10.5)

MR.ASH Since installing the new version 2.3.2.1 GIMP won't work correctly anymore. After starting X11 the screen turns black/white and als fonts in the windows and menu bars are too big. I don't even see the OSX menubar anymore, so the only solution to is to force quit X11 so i can return to the desktop. This release is very buggy! (Version 2.3.2.1)

CleanApp | Sep 10 2008 |
MR.ASH Will CleanApp 3 ever leave the beta state? Also the logging deamon often still uses 90% CPU for hours. Despite of these annoying facts CleanApp is the only Mac uninstaller witch can delet 100% of all files witch are written by a program/installer (thanks to the logging service). All other uninstallers just search for similar file names of the application. So there's a great risk that not all files will be deleted or a importend system file could be deleted. But to be honest, even so the other uninstallers work very well. (Version 3.0b10)

MR.ASH iPSP seems to be a very promissing tool. However it realy dosen't work at all. The program runs extremly unstable and crashe ofte without any real reason. Converting movies is a gamble from the begining and it's absolutly impossible to install Homebrew tools or convert a PSX game for the PSP. At the moment absolutly not worth the oney. Transmit | May 3 2008 |
MR.ASH Transmit gives you a very nice GUI and iss very easy in use. However data transfer is very slow and unstable. I've tried to copy 250 GB of date to my NAS and i got only a max. 5 MB/s transfer speed. On top of that Transmit always got files witch could not be transferred and terminated the connection completly giving you no feedback what has been already copied and what not. Not worth it's money at all. I've tried the same thing using FileZila and it works like a charm. Of course there is still data witch can't be transferred but FileZila doesn't quit the connection and continues copying the other files moving the not copied files to a seperate window. GUI is not very nice but compared to Transmit it works. (Version 3.6.6)

EyeConnect | Mar 28 2008 |
MR.ASH EyeConnect is a easy to use MediaCenter for OSX. It supports many diffrent devices like Sony's PS3. Unfortunatly PS3 support is not very stable at the moment. The only issue here is the price 49,95$ is way too expensive and absolutly not worth the software. If you're looking for a better MediaCenter then try MediaLink witch is only 20$. An an alternativ you can also try Twonky Media. (Version 1.5.3)

TwonkyMedia Server | Mar 28 2008 |
MR.ASH As for now i've tested three diffrent Mediaservers for OSX and my PS3. Twonky Media scores third behind EyeConnect and the winner MediaLink. Twonky Media is not very easy to use (compared with the other tow) an still costs 29,95$. MediaLink's only 20$). Twonky has many features indeed, but no full integration in iLife (except iTunes). Also starting up or spting the server is very fishy and far from user friendly. Allthough it's a good Media Center software but there are better and cheaper solutions on the sofware market. In my oppinion Twonky must be freeware. (Version 4.4.4)

MediaLink | Mar 23 2008 |
MR.ASH Well worth it's money. Works perfectly with my PS3 and gives complete access to my iTunes, iPhoto and movie libraries. What's still missing are some trancoding functions for movies that aren't nativly supported by the PS3 (like MKV for example). A funktion like "Automagic transcoding" (like in connect360, also from Nullriver) witch converts a movie on the fly to a compatible PS3 format would be great, so i can stream even unsupported media to my PS3. For those who have problems: If your PS3 and Mac are connectet to a non uPnP capable router you have to forward TCP port 51413 to the IP of your Mac where MediaLink is installed. To uninstall you just have to stop MediaLink and delete the preferencePane in /library/preferencePanes, that's it. (Version 1.3)

Microsoft Office 2008 | Mar 11 2008 |
MR.ASH I realy like the new look and feel of Office 2008. It's more Mac like than before and there are many functions, templates and compatibility present. Also the installation went quite good without any problems. Unfortunatly Office 2008 is slow, very slow! I thougt with the new UB architecture it will run like hell on intel Macs. But in fact it's slower than Office 2004 under rosetta and also much slower than NeoOffice or OpenOffice. Also Office 2007 on Windows runs much faster. I'm using a 24 inch iMac with 2,8GHz Core2extreme CPU and 4GB RAM and Office 2008 is still slower than any other office suite on my 1st generation MacBook with 2GHz CoreDuo CPU and 2GB RAM. BRADSMITH74 First, please don't give a star rating to a product if you're only going to make a comment about the cost/value. It's misleading to people who actually want to know about software. Instead us "Review Type" of "Comment". Second, unless I'm mistaken Onyx doesn't do the same thing- specifically when it comes to automating a large number of tasks/crons and running them on a periodic basis. In addition to all of the predefined tasks, Macaroni allows you to create an run your own cron tasks via its simple interface. I've been a very happy user of Macaroni for years and find that it's well worth $10. (Version 2.1.1)

BLAZEDRAGON555 Why is it useless? You definitely don't get 448 bit encryption with disk utility, nor do you get transferability and the ability to cloak your files. You cannot open .dmg's in Windows, and you definitely cannot save the .dmg you create as a .png to hide its true contents, can you? You might want to try the app out more, to see what it can really do. (Version 1.1)

TESSERACT SOFTWARE Mr. Ash, if you are having trouble downloading a video you should try emailing me or posting a "trouble" not a "review" because it is possible that you did something wrong, that there is something wrong with the site you are trying to get the videos from, that the site you tried is not supported, etc. Also, the error message is not "invalid site", its "Error: The url is either invalid or not supported". My guess is that the website that you were trying to download videos from is not supported. Please email me (tesseractsoftware[at]gmail.com) or reply to this post with the url's that you are having trouble with and I'll try to figure out what went wrong. (Version 1.3.2)

THEMORIOLES Mediafork is an update to Handbrake, not a copy of handbrake so it makes sense that the user interface would be similar. Most of the work is under the hood, adding 640xXXX h264 for the iPod, multiple disk images at one time, etc. The update libraries should result in better encoding. I have used the software a couple of times and have great success. I highly suggest this UPDATE to handbrake. (Version 0.8.0b1)

MR.ASH Very good software suite and it's free! Works hand in hand with most Micro$oft formats with a few little beauty faults. Unfortunatlly OpenOffice is not very user friendly and uses the X11 window system. Especialy beginners have lots of problems with OpenOffice. Why isn't there a real OSX version like for Window$ or Linux? I recommend to try NeoOffice. It bases on Java and OpenOffice and provides a much more user friendly interface. YOXI Just to clarify, NeoOffice is not 'based on java' but uses some java calls on top of (almost entirely) C code and cocoa to draw windows etc. without needing X11 to run. This X11 version is therefore a little more speedy than NeoOffice, especially on older macs, but NeoOffice is better integrated with OSX. Speed/usability you can decide on for yourself, as you can install them side by side and try both - personally I find it useful to have both for that reason (e.g. on my old powerbook, running macros or a search/replace on a large doc is a lot faster in X11 but I prefer NeoOffice for pretty much everything else).
