DivX

MICHAEL KWASNICKI  I don't get it.

Is DivX making itself unnecessary?

MKV with H.264 and AAC is definitely no effort and available for free.

Anyway why using those codecs in MKV since they are part of MPEG-4.

SPLIG  Matroska (MKV) has more capabilities than the standard MP4 wrapper, plus it is open source, so does not involve MPEG group licence fees.

MICHAEL KWASNICKI  It would be nice if the Finder Icon was not redrawn 60 times per second or so, making operations on the desktop less responsible. (Try Quartz Debug and watch yourself)

Also a feature request is to be not forced to set a manual mount point. Instead it would be nice if it mouts the same way as all the other mounts. Just in /Volumes/ with an automatically generated folder with the name of the server or so.

The rest is working well and as promised.

MICHAEL KWASNICKI  This ist not a normal boot manager. With this tool you can also boot Linux or other OSes from external harddrives which is not supported by BootCamp. This enables the ability to not only use the internal Harddrive where you have to create partitions that limit your internal disk space. You can use dedicated external harddrives for the OSes. And that is awesome.

(just bad that Windows does not allow to be installed on an external Harddrive even it recognizes it)

TimeMachinePerspective
Mar 22 2008

MICHAEL KWASNICKI  Sounds pretty interesting and useful. Unfortunately it is not working for me as it is promoted.

I'm using Leopard with the latest updates. TimeMachine is storing the backups on a HFS+Journaled FireWire HDD.

With the modified version from GrandPerspective I get exactly the same results as with the original version (0.9.11). Both are telling me 3.17 TB is stored on the 320 GB HDD when "file size measure" is set to Physical. If the "file size measure" is set to Logical then the modified version only reports 22.6 GB but in fact the TimeMachine HDD is filled to 230.1 GB.

MICHAEL KWASNICKI  The ease of use and the capabilities are amazing but one little thing is missing :

As this is a vector graphics program it would be great to be able to import from or export to SVG. Leopard already knows how to dispay them in QuickLook thanks to the implementation in Safari.

MUSUBANA  This isn’t a vector app in the proper sense. Therefore, it cannot possibly export as .svg.

When you choose ”insert vector”, it just uses a vector line to delimit a bitmap figure. Try increasing the zoom level, and you’ll see all the clumsy pixels…

MICHAEL KWASNICKI  This application is great. I've always had to make a screenshot and move that file around to let somebody see what I see but this application makes it easier.

But I also want to point out some problems :

- on my iMac Core Duo with OS X 10.4.9 it crashes frequently and I have to relaunch it very often.

- the pointer on the screenshots is just a yellow outline. I'm not sure if it was supposed to be that way.

At last I would like to request a feature :

- I would like to be able to adjust the size of the output image. In many cases a 50% sized image is enough.
