Diogenes
Apr 6 2008
****.

MICHAEL_HAEUSLER  This application is really good. I still know the old Pandora software, and it had a few features that are not yet implemented in Diogenes, and it was a bit easier to use. There's another TLG-reader called "Hellespont II", but with Diogenes there's PHI-support and an included dictionary, which makes it the best MacOSX-application for working with the TLG- & PHI-databases at the moment. And it's free!

For those who still need a BetaCode converter, you can use the freeware "UniGreek" by Philip Dow, the author of the outstanding Journler application:

PS… for the other reviewers who asked for the location of the databases: the TLG- and PHI-CDRoms have to be bought. They're not included in the Diogenes distribution.

MICHAEL_HAEUSLER  No, the new v2.0.1 still uses the finder code injection method, which is demonstrated by an alert message from "Little Snitch". I talked to the programmers at obdev about this: It is a security hole that is only relevant on the PPC platform, and apparently it hasn't been closed (and might never be). This security hole has however been closed on MacIntel, and since "FinderPop" now also works as UniversalBinary, the author of "FinderPop" must be using a different procedure for the Intel version. "Default Folder X" had been updated a long time ago, so I guess it's not that complicated. (But to be 100% sure we'll need a report from someone using "LittleSnitch" on MacIntel.)

MICHAEL_HAEUSLER  One word: brilliant. And they still manage to improve the application and its features every now and then.

MICHAEL_HAEUSLER  Great little app from the author of the outstanding Journler application. There are a few other BetaCode converters around, but this one is by far the best. Other applications occasionaly gave me a wrong output. I wish there were more features, like a browser/search function for TLG- and PHI-CDRoms… but as the app description says, this is (at this time) only a BetaCode converter.

MICHAEL_HAEUSLER  I fell in love with FinderPop back in the MacOS9 days. The only problem I see concerns the near future: FinderPop uses the well-known security hole that allows applications to perform what's called "Finder code injection". This security flaw of the MacOSX has been corrected for MacIntel computers, and the same is expected for the older PPC platform. But what will then happen to FinderPop? Is it wise to get used to a great application like FinderPop, if its basic foundation, which it needs to run, will soon be eliminated, unless its code is re-written? Anyway, great stuff!!!

BASTIBENSE  I doubt that it uses a security hole. Besides, its available for PPC/Intel and probably uses offical or inofficial APIs to do it's work.

Font Finagler
Oct 17 2006
***..

MICHAEL_HAEUSLER  Messed up my whole system on MacOS 10.4.8. Suddenly all websites were displayed badly, wrong font sizes, bold and italic missing etc.. The Apple Mail GUI was completely warped out of proportion, here also: wrong font sizes etc.. Then I used the font cache cleaner in TinkerTool System v1.6, and everything was okay again. So it seems that the current version of Font Finagler (0.5.3) is not suitable for the latest MacOS version. Definitely needs an update.
