MERE MORTAL  Unfortunately I'm still waiting on a universal binary version of 4D (the database engine used by Safe Place). I have a beta now and am testing it. Hopefully they'll release it soon.

MERE MORTAL  I love this program. I use it monthly to send a personalized newsletter to my customers (with their permission). The data is downloaded from a MySQL database right into Direct Mail. Works flawlessly.

MERE MORTAL  If you're having speed problems with Safe Place, add it to your ShapeShifter exclude list. Unfortunately ShapeShifter does not play well with Safe Place.

MERE MORTAL  4D 2004 rocks. You can have a true client/server database up and running in a day. And with a little more effort, you can give it exactly the interface you want. Even a web interface.

The database engine is rock-solid. You're not going to lose any data here. It also includes great automated backup features and a separate repair utility that can usually resurrect your data if it gets clobbered by system or hardware glitches.

Check out www.Mere-Mortal-Software.com for an example of a shareware product I created with 4D 2003.

MERE MORTAL  You don't "have to" upgrade anything if you don't want to. 4D doesn't stop working when a new version is released. And 4D fully supports and sells two versions worth of product (for example now they're supporting both v2003 and 2004). 4D 2003 will continue to be supported until 4D 2007 (the next major upgrade) is released, which gives that version a full 4 years of support. Not bad in a fast-paced software environment.

MERE MORTAL  Dictionaries are a necessity, but if you're just trying to learn a language, this program offers an excellent way to figure out how to say something in a foreign language. I use Ultralingua as least as often as I use my online dictionary.

DAVE BATTON  Steel uses line feeds rather than carriage returns as the record delimiter in its export files. I'd never seen this before from a Macintosh program, so Safe Place wasn't expecting it (Mac software generally uses a carriage return as the record delimiter).

Safe Place 2.0.1 can now import a file that uses line feeds rather than carriage returns.

MERE MORTAL  I just downloaded version 1.0.1, and it's working fine. Looks like whatever was causing problems for earlier posters may now be fixed.

I did notice that it moves out of the way if you use Expose. Not what I wanted, since I wanted to move the windows to see the snow. :-)

It's only been five minutes, but so far I like it.

MERE MORTAL  Oops. I see it is priced at $20. I misread a previous review. I think $20 is a fair price for this application.

****.

MERE MORTAL  Not bad at all. I think it looks very promising. I agree that $30 is a little steep, but I think I could part with $20 for an application like this.

I would like to see the author study Apple's interface guidelines a little closer before the final release. It's a great interface. It's close enough to being correct that a little work would make it a great interface.

DAVE BATTON  Very cool utility. It's very simple and elegant. Does just what I need without a bunch of extra crap. I enter small amounts of text into a database that gets displayed on a public web site and this lets me make sure I don't have any typos without switching applications. HIghly recommended.
