MELMAN FLINK Update: I was able to get the printer working by changing its IP address and using the LDP protocol. Changing the IP of this series of printers is done via software. In my case, I used another Mac on the network that was running OS 9, and then downloaded Apple Printer Utility which let me talk to the printer and change its IP. This can also be done via the Terminal but that's above my pay grade. Interestingly the folks at Apple said this printer could not be used, even though it's listed as a supported model on their site. In any event, it's working like a champ now under Snow Leopard. Happy ending. (Version 10.6)

WAYNESHERIDAN Melman, in reference to your excellent post below. Why do I have to change the IP address? I get the address by just turning the printer on and off. I love my old Laserwriter and it indeed has been a reliable workhorse. I have tried all the suggestions including the Appleshare from my wife's computer but keep getting the can not connect to printer. BTW, apple said it couldn't be done to be also. If you could give step by step I would apprecaite it. MELMAN FLINK Update: I was able to get the printer working by changing its IP address and using the LDP protocol. MELMAN FLINK Snow Leopard 10.6 removes AppleTalk protocol thereby rendering my old but faithful Apple LaserWriter 16/600PS unable to print. Just an FYI for any fellow old school printer users. (Version 10.6)

MATT3141 That's incorrect. That printer *is* supported under Mac OS 10.6. Refer to Knowledgebase article HT3669. (Version 10.6)

DRG According to document HT366: "If your printer can only use the AppleTalk protocol, the printer must be connected to, and then shared by, an appropriate AppleTalk-capable printer server." I have a trusty HP LaserJet 6MP printer. It is 12 years old, has printed over 50,000 copies without a single problem, and because of a decision on Apple's part, it's essentially headed to the land fill. Would it have been such a problem to allow us to add the AppleTalk Protocol as an option if we had a printer that needed it? BTW, this info was listed under the Apple printers, NOT the HP printers, so I upgraded without realizing the problem. It appears that the 6MP is supported BUT only via a print sharing situation. By the time you go out, find an appropriate print server and set it up, you might as well buy a new printer. My printer is critical for my business, so I purchased a new printer, but my ecology side is SO ANGRY at Apple for this stupidity, I could just slap Mr Jobs' face! And even if there was a way to get it to run with Snow Leopard, the TIME involved makes it not worth the effort. What ever happened to PLUG AND PLAY??? Even with the new Brother printer I purchased, I had to download the drivers manually. (Version 10.6)

MELMAN FLINK It's always important to include hardware specs, especially given that this version covers such a long timeline in Mac history. As for plug-ins, anyone who is using plug-ins that are not mainstream (i.e., Apple sanctioned or Flash) and reports problems without FIRST disabling said plug-ins does a disservice to fellow Mac users and discredits themselves. If you must use 3rd party plug-ins that are not Apple sanctioned, please do you own troubleshooting first before running around with your hair on fire.

MELMAN FLINK No such problems noted here (as yet) including on the referenced site. Wouldn't it be ducky if people filing trouble reports actually put their hardware configurations down? What kind of bug/trouble reporting doesn't include the relevant hardware? iMac 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 3GB DDR2 SDRAM (Version 4.0.3)

MELMAN FLINK Faster, more stable and a joy in use, this iteration of Safari earns my seal of approval. Because no other browser in the OS X world integrates so well with my personal workflow, Safari is my best of breed and Firefox, et al, simply do not cut the mustard.

MELMAN FLINK There was a serious bug in the last version that would cause Safari to crash when printing a packing list from within Amazon's Seller services. I'm pleased as punch to report that this version appears to have addressed that problem. Evidently the engineers at Apple really do read and respond to bug reports. Thank you! (Version 4.0.2)

MELMAN FLINK 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 3GB MHz DDR2 SDRAM. iMac 24". This 4.0 release candidate is soooo much slower than the beta on my machine! Just awful! Going to try and reinstall the 4.0 beta now. What a disappointment. Hopefully, just another example of less than optimal QA from Apple. Perhaps there's a setting I need to adjust, or something like that? In any event, out of the box I have no choice but to give this no mice, no stars and a big thumbs down.

STAR-AFFINITY Hmm.... Strange, for me it's actually noticeably faster (no, it's not only because of the restart after install). Must be something else that's wrong on your computer, everything is just fine here. (Version 4.0)

MELMAN FLINK Installed without any issues on a G4/533 DP and a G4/400. Nothing, negative or positive, to report, so far. Comment nit: Might be nice to see the type of Macs being used when evaluating software here. After all, not all Macs are the same and some issues are model specific. (Version 7.5)
