Handbreak has a different purpose...

RipIt would be the software you use to get the content of the optical media (DVDs) on your hard drive... Only after the content is on your hard drive and "open" (ripped), Handbrake would be used to create a video file (.avi, .mkv, mp4) that can be played via VLC, Quicktime, iTunes, etc...

I used beta 1 since the beggining... Had 2 crashed and, as it happens in every crash I was pissed... But I have never lost any data in it... Never were my systems messed beyond repair...

I'm getting this beta 2 now and I'm very confident that it will be even better (VMware is NOT Parallels)...

Excellent... and VERY needed...

Once you start using QuickLook, it's very annoying when you're presented with a file that will not show a preview but an overly enlarged ugly icon insted... This seems to solve this issue for CHM files...

Agreed, it's not a CHM reader, but that's not what it intends to be, I guess... Most CHM documents are hundreds of pages long and I don't think it's practical to read them via QuickLook, even if it's possible one day... Obviously it would be VERY good to be able to browse the pages of the documents but this is a great start indeed...

If you want to use software A, always open software B first? Seriously? I don't even know or care if that would work... But it feels like a PC solution, not a Mac's...

I should have mentioned this before, but I already wrote to the developers, describing the issue in great detail...

Their response, transcribed below, also indicates that there is in fact some problem:

"Completely understand your problem. We've not finished this part of the code because it is a pretty complex issue, but we _are_ working on it, and will post a fix in one of our future releases.

Thanks for taking the time to write to us.

Have a nice day

Csaba"

First of all, I like the software and its design philosophy... I can't understand, however, that such a finely crafted application treats all DVDs as "Movies"...

At least in my case, most of my DVDs are music shows, clips and concerts, and they look awkwardly out of place in the "Movies" section...

icon

Date: 18 Jul 2008 04:33

I'm sorry but you're wrong here...

This software puts so much attention to detail that once you drop a custom image to a book/DVD/whatever, it will check for the "dimensions" field, usually provided by Amazon, although it's missing for some items (definitely NOT the software's fault). If the "dimensions" field is set properly (you may correct it manually) and the custom image is not distorted in its aspect ratio, the software will analyze and crop the image to its exact proportion... No other software does it so well... And all this while still placing the item beautifully aligned by it's "base" (as it would occur in the real world) and keeping the item correctly sized, relative to other items in the collection...

I own licenses to two of the 'Pedia apps and have already tried many other related applications (Booxter, Librarian Pro, plus a few I don't even remember the name), and none of them comes even close to Delicious Library 2 in it's attention to detail and ease of use...

Those other apps seem (and feel) just "put together", by joining feature after feature after feature without any care about how the final result will look/feel like... Delicious Library, on the other hand, feels like a very well though-out app ("engineered" or "crafted" if you prefer)... It doesn't do everything, but what it does it does very well...

I would still like it to support sources other than Amazon (I'm from Brazil and most of my books/DVDs are not on Amazon), but I understand why the developer does it... Amazon has the best database in the world for such a software, and the quality of the user experience is greatly defined by the source of your data...

For such a small company, I feel they made a choice that not a lot of us like or agree, but it's still their choice to make... Why should they waste valuable development resources trying to appeal to everybody??? Not even Apple does it...

I really wanted to like this, but I just can't get it to work properly when merging folders/resuming files. Transmit does it just fine... I've sent a message to their support and hope they can look into it...

Visually-wise I find this to be a great software, however, until it works as it should I can't use it...

I won't rate it at this moment, but I would probably give it 3 stars.

The irony in this whole story is that users who pirate the software will certainly find a way to do so again and again and again (as they always do).

I agree that Aroona Software has the right to protect its product, in order to assure future development of VideoDrive, but there's a fine line here that must never be crossed... Customer experience should never be sacrified.

As DRAW said, Mac users can't stand MS-like behavior. That's why OS X does not annoy the user with registration or activation issues, unlike Windows...

I guess if this is a one time thing, it's ok... But this is it... If this happens another time, I think the company should rethink its registration strategy.

I have to say that this is the first release that is behaving perfectly well for me... So far I had absolutely no problems and everything is working as expected... Speeds are great (at least as high as Azureus, which is impressive) and I have lost no data...

I'm a long time Azureus user and every time a new Transmission is released I try it out, wondering if this (release) will be the one... My fingers are still crossed, at least for a few more days but I believe this might be it...

I was really hoping this could be a good app... However, I have already tried to use it about ten times over the last couple of years, but I give up...

On the surface it has the looks of a Mac application, but it has several annoying (or non-standard/confusing behaviors) and it's slower than hell... Slow to a point that it gets impossible to use, even with just a few movies in the library...

I would really love to have a great looking yet fully functional alternative...

My recommendation is (ironically) to keep using Renamer4Mac 2.8.

Works great on Tiger and Leopard and the improvements listed for version 3.0 are really only very minor ones...

BTW, the improved keyboard control is listed as a feature of version 2.8 (the previous one) and not of this new one.

FileBuddy doesn't work properly with Leopard and its last update was about a year ago... Also, it has way too many features (and I don't mean that in a good way).

The fact is that Renamer4Mac is a wonderful software... A one-trick pony, sure, but a very useful and straightforward one... Yet, not worth the $26 the new company is asking for it... I'll keep using 2.8

Besides no longer being a freeware (yes, 2.8 is freeware), the only noteworthy changes are the new (new, yes... better, not so sure) and the ability to auto-update...

Well... Thanks, but no thanks...

Well, other containers also allow you to mix whatever you want... Both .AVI and .WMV allow xvid, h264, for example... Of course, just because it is possible, doesn't mean that it is desireable, but that's a whole different story...

I agree that OGG vorbis audio is not the most popular format around (definitely not), but it's so unpopular that I almost never come across it...

Anyway, as far as my comprehension goes, it doesn't make any sense to blame a container format for the bad decisions of its users...

Hi BOSX,

Check Together's support forums ( http://reinventedsoftware.com/forum/ ). Most of the issues you mentioned are discussed there...

Some notes:

1. Growl notifications always can be made optional. Just edit Growl's preferences in System Preferences panel...

2. As for adding things to the library, you can use the services shortcut (I believe it's Shift-Command-T by default, but I'm not sure). Check the forums as this is discussed there...

3. About the shelf, it's all dependent on your particular workflow... I try to use the services shortcut most of the time but when I use the shelf I would actually like it to be totally hidden (yet still there—still functional—as you can set in the app Leap). I don't know if that's what you mean, but if it is, it's something I already discussed with the developer and we'll probabluy see it in a near version... Anyway, check the forums as this is thoroughly discussed there...

Take care,

Be aware that the order in which search results are shown is NOT the same as in a Google search. Dave Watanabe modifies the order to benefit from it. The problem is that all this is done without any form of disclosure...

Maybe this is not illegal per se, but it certainly is not the right way for such an app to behave...

Over the last few days I've been thoroughly testing every file/info management app available.

In the end, my choice was between Together and EagleFiler. Both are excellent apps but I find Together to offer a better balance of features and user experience. The interface is the best among these apps and the developer—Steve Harris—is very responsive and accessible.

The price ($39) is the same (or almost) of the other apps I was considering (Yojimbo and EagleFiler), so this wasn't an issue. I'm sure several users might find $39 to be "too much" for such an app, but let me say: try it and you'll see that it's not expensive at all.

Very recommended!

I SO wanted to like this client...

Azureus is java and totally PC-like... Very powerful and stable, but it's way too ugly for me to run it without tears in my eyes...

Transmission is a promise... A promise that never materializes... Everything was going well: first selective file downloading (previously available ONLY in Azureus... immediately copied by Xtorrent)... Recently, the project incorporated encryption, the feature I was waiting for... However, from this moment on, Transmission is totally unusable... You wouldn't believe the amount of data lost in each recheck (when restarting, for example). I must have lost about 50-60Gb of data. I don't know if this has something to do with encryption or not, but if it does, I guess it explains why Dave Watanabe has not YET launched a version of Xtorrent with encryption... Brilliant engineering, right?

And then there is Xtorrent. Very pretty interface... Unfortunatelly, that's about it... By the number of mixed opinions about his supporting skills (some say he stinks, some say he is fast and gentle), I must conclude Dave is bipolar or has some multiple personality disorder... I confess that I don'r own a copy of Xtorrent, but as a owner of all his other softwares I must say that his support stinks (my opinion)... In the few times I needed some kind of assistance, due to activation issues, he was very very slow to answer my emails... Also, during the beta testing phase of Xtorrent (prior to the official launch), I took the time to email him with opinions and suggestions regarding the sofware. Although he was not particularly rude in his answers, he had a kind of superior and condescending way of dismissing my suggestions... To me that kind of attitude is totally unprofessional and should not be tolerated in a software developer...

But this is the small stuff... Xtorrent simply CANNOT (and WILL NOT) be taken seriously until the serious private trackers accept it as a valid client. As it stands now, there is not one single TOP tracker that accepts this client in the swarm... Using it will only serve to one purpose: get you banned...

I guess in the end it all comes down to a simple choice: do you wanna use a beautiful client that is only able to connect to the lame public trackers that WE ALL know of, or do you wanna use an ugly client that is accepted by every one of the awesome trackers that SOME OF US know of? What do you care for the most? This may be the situation where that famous quote about journeys and destinations is proven wrong: with torrents, the destination is FAR more important than the journey...

Until some viable alternative emerge I'll continueto cry while using Azureus 2.5.0.4, the "Shrek" of torrent clients... You should too...

Peace,

MacMelo

Oh, it's been "just" a week or so... I guess I'll just wait... Talk about money well spent!!!

Well... If you NEVER had a problem with Transmission, good for you... But as I stated in previous comments and as SEVERAL other reviewers have stated, Transmission 0.90/0.91 has serious problems...

To me the most serious is the TOTALLY unreliable verification of downloaded pieces upon restart... In huge torrents this can kill your ratio very easily... Ironically, Transmission's description tells you that "These days, bandwidth is a precious commodity. Transmission allows you to ration this commodity efficiently."... Until they solve these very serious issues they should say that Transmission may actually kill your ratio due to very inefficient use of your bandwidth...

I really hope these issues get solved ASAP... For now, back to Azureus 2.5.0.4...

icon
Type: Comments
Date: 29 Oct 2007 00:05

Well... Let me comment then...

Version 0.91 has not solved any of the "losing data" issues I've experienced with 0.90 (discussed a few posts bellow this one)... These are probably the same issues discussed by POWERSCAPE...

I tested both with new torrents and with torrents started with 0.90 and my valid data after rechecking was generally 50-60% of the real downloaded amount...

I really don't wan't to go back to Azureus... I've promised myself that I would NOT install Azureus under Leopard... This promise is getting harder and harder to keep...

I'm a big fan of Transmission... In time, I believe it will be THE client for the Mac...

Anyway, more often that I would like to admit, it loses data... Several gigabytes of data, actually...

If I keep the client running, torrents finish and everything goes fine... However, if I pause the torrents and close the client for a system reboot, for example, when I open it again I notice a significant reduction in the download %.

For example, consider the following torrents:

1. 560Mb (1 file): 92.92% before pausing - 68.02% after reboot...

2. 5.37Gb (over 100 files): 56.60% before pausing - 48.79% after reboot...

3. 3.74Gb (75 files): 27.58% before pausing - 16.60% after reboot...

I'm running the 0.90 version with Mac OS X 10.5 with every update installed... Transmission was also set to IGNORE UNENCRYPTED PEERS...

I'm sorry for your bad experiences with this amazing piece of software... Anyway, as a previous user said, you have only yourself to blame for not installing VMware Tools, which would solve all the mouse delays and annoyances you've experienced... And before anyone say that such tools should be installed automatically (I agree), let's remember that in Parallels they are also installed by the user, after the guest OS is already installed...

Just wanted to add my comment to this and say that in spite of being on the market for a short time, VMware Fusion is ALREADY a more stable and mature software than Parallels... I used Parallels for quite some time but in the last months it's been so unstable that it's basically useless to anyone who needs it for anything serious...

Although this is a nice and prety client , I agree with most of the comments on Mr. Watanabe...

I own licenses to Newsfire, Acquisition, and even paid for Inquisitor (which is free nowadays). Every time I had to contact Watanabe, it's been a nightmare... For example, after a clean install I could not activate Acquisition for over a month, 'cause he didn't respond to my emails...

As for the features, this is a prety basic torrent client... Too basic for my needs... And since it's banned from every single private tracker that matters, there's no point in using it...

As for stability issues, I can't comment, since I gave up on testing it a few months ago...

Bottom line, if you care about your downloads and uploads, and want to access the kind of goods that only private trackers offer, go grab Azureus... It's java and not so prety, but it's by far (and that's very very far) the best client out there...
