M CHANG Great piece of software. Some have suggested Remote Buddy and other free/openware. Signal does EXACTLY what I want it to do -- control iTunes from another room using iPhone. The app is fast and responsive, unlike Remote Buddy (which was bloatware and did a bunch of things, but the iTunes integration was not as good or fast). A bit quirky (example: if you search by artist, find it, but if there is only one album by them and you add it, it does it alphabetical vs. in album order), but when you learn the workaround(s), it's quite nice. gSync | Dec 6 2007 |
M CHANG Running OS 10.4.10 (home) and 10.4.11 (work). Both systems are syncing quite happily with my Google Calendar. Program does what it's supposed to. There are some items that aren't explained in the Help (hence my 4 out of 5 rating). (Version 1.2.1)

M CHANG I agree 100% with the comments written here. At first I thought I was doing something wrong, but after over two hours of experimentation, I have realized this app/plugin isn't quite ready for primetime. It is very slow, doesn't play more than one song at a time, and can't turn off pics or playlist listings to speed things up. It also has very inflexible install rules (I had to get a new code when installing on home and work machines, and had to email the dev to reset my iPhone plugin code after swapping to 2nd Mac. I'm glad I only paid $10. On the plus side, the dev seems very responsive. Maybe this app/plugin will come around. (Version 1.0)

Garmin Communicator Plugin | Aug 9 2007 |
M CHANG Visited "More Information" link and looked at Garmin's Web site. It says "Mac support coming soon." HUH?!? Went ahead, downloaded plug-in and installed. Fired up Safari and went to the test page. Said the plug-in was not installed or the browser is not compatible. Switched over to Firefox. Same results. So I can't do anything with this. Yippee. CallWave Text Messaging | Jul 10 2007 |
M CHANG Callwave, you assertion is incorrect on my computer. I can go to your site, click on Logout , and get to the Login page. I then close the window, go to Safari > Preferences > Cookies and delete all cookies that have Callwave in the URL. I "Empty Cache" in Safari. Quit out of Safari. When I activate widget and click "Archive," it takes me to my logged in Callwave page with all of my messages listed. DEFINITELY A SECURITY ISSUE. (Version 3.6.1)

CALLWAVE M Chang: Your CallWave authentication and PIN information lives within the widget. When you "activate" the widget, you are logging in, so you will be able to see your text log without re-entering your PIN on CallWave.com. If you want the widget password protected on your desktop for security reasons, click on the "i" button in the bottom right, the widget will flip over and you can click Logout. Then anyone who wants to use the widget will need to log in with a mobile number and PIN. I hope this helps. Thanks for using CallWave. (Version 3.6.1)

CallWave Text Messaging | Jul 5 2007 |
M CHANG I sent two (wasn't sure first one went through) feedback messages to Callwave expressing my concern that every text message (and the number sent to) is logged and saved. You cannot delete them from Callwave's Web site or stop the logging. Why is this a concern for me? ANYONE can get on my computer at work which as CallWave installed. The widget is not password protected, and in fact keeps your phone # and email address at all times. Click the new "Archive" button and it instantly takes you to your text archive. No password protection at all. Just your communications open to anyone. And I forgot to mention I work on a laptop. I got two responses quickly (thank you, Callwave). Both of them can be summarized by this reponse: "... Please be informed that currently you do not have the option to delete your text messages on your account. However your request will be forwarded to the appropriate department and given serious consideration and we will inform you about the changes...." So if you're worried about your privacy, please send feedback to their site. I know the product is free, but privacy shouldn't be a compromise. (Version 3.6.1)

M CHANG How do you figure? The combo seems to work fine with me. Not trying to be snarky. I'm not seeing the problem. (Version 1.0)

M CHANG Why do I have to register? What updates are made from the last version? No info given. Downgraded to previous version, which works just fine. (Version 3.6)

X Lossless Decoder | Feb 15 2007 |
M CHANG Having a problem with converting FLAC to Apple Lossless. The files -- when transferred to 30GB video iPod -- force the iPod to restart (to black screen with Apple logo). Prince's Purple Rain -- Track 1 crashes 1 second in. Track 2 seems to play (for first 5 seconds, then I switched ot next track). Track 3 crashes in 1 second. Same for first track of Pet Shop Boy's Fundamental. I had a similar problem with Max (not the most recent version), where FLAC or other formats converted to Apple Lossless would result in a file that would play one second or so and then skip to next track. The most recent version seems to fix. (Version 20070214)

DasBoot | Feb 9 2007 |
M CHANG Also submitted to XLR8yourmac.com: There were reports of the app freezing with a screen full of slashes, numbers and letters. I had the same problem, but when I copied the app from the disk image to my Application folder and re-ran, the problem went away. This was on my work PowerBook G4 1.67. Strange thing, I had no such issue on my home Intel Mini. It ran fine from the disk image. Home attempt was to 30GB video iPod. Work attempt was to 20GB click wheel iPod (b/w screen). Both computers also had a problem where I couldn't eject the Diskwarrior CD after running DasBoot. When I tried to restart, both computers froze (spinning beachball on PowerBook, spinning clock hands on Mini). I had to press and hold POWER to shut down. Also, the applications you want to run have to be in the Applications folder -- not in subfolders or in Utilities. DiskWarrior, for example, creates a Utilities folder in the Apps. You can either alias to it or just pull it out of the Utilities folder. Lastly, I've run into problems adding other disk utility apps to the iPod drive. Drive Genius, for example, has to install a few files into Library > Application Support, and it can't do so from the SubRosaSoft launcher. A workaround was to install DG on PowerBook or Mini, and then copy the App Support folder to the same location on iPod. My initial attempt to run Cocktail just by copying to Apps folder also resulted in a freeze. I suspect I have to do the same Install and Copy App Support trick. With these learnings, I was able to produce two fast, usable repair iPods -- one USB for Intel Macs and one FW for PPC Macs. Cool, but more documentation would have made it easier. M CHANG Update: Antonio, at different times, has contacted me and sent me test versions to run. I then send him back a log file the test creates. I think he has nailed down the problem (the last test app he sent 6/29 appears to have worked). Stay tuned... (Version 1.14)

M CHANG Downloaded and tried. I think I will be staying with Thoth -- even if only PPC. MT-NW is missing one big feature that Thoth has, the ability to designate a different default save location for each newsgroup. (Version 3.5.1)

M CHANG Not working on my Intel Duo Mini. The software worked fine (in demo mode) with old G4 tower and wife's G4 PowerBook. Using a Motorola v551 phone. On Mini, all Entourage contacts are listed as: (no description available) (no numbers) Emailed developer. He sent the test app. I emailed him the results. Haven't heard back. (Version 1.13)

EyeTV | May 24 2006 |
M CHANG Nick (and the engineers) at El Gato have been great updating me via email and sending me a beta version in the week I've had my EyeTV 250. I originally had problems recording and with the remote. Each of the issues have been resolved with 2.2.1 -- and ahead of the schedules they were telling me. I'm loving the 250 now. Hopefully future versions will speed up the iPod conversion. (Version 2.2.1)
