SurplusMeter
Jan 8 2007

MWHITE111  At the start of this month I started to wonder if my ISP was properly recording my bandwith usage. I did a search for a program to log my internet activity and found SurplusMeter. I have used it for a week or so now and have been very happy up until today. (I found out that my ISP and my internet acitivty was in sync I had just calculated some things wrong.)

Today I went to my ISP to check out my bandwith and noticed a rather large discrepency between my ISP and SurplusMeter (more than 3GB difference). I brought up SurplusMeter and noticed that the "bytes up/down" figures weren't moving even though I was actively downloading/uploading several files. It was like SurplusMeter had just stopped. I wasn't sure what to do, so I paused it and then restarted it--SurplusMeter than began to register my uploads/downloads. Anyone else have this problem?

I'm on a G4 running 10.3.9

Thanks.

MWHITE111  Thanks for the response. I figures out the problem.

It was just a matter of jumping on lightly supported

(few peers) torrents at the end of their life. When

I got on a torrent early that a lot of peers my upload

speed took off -- in excess of 74k!

Thanks again for the suggestions.

MWHITE111  I'm a newbie when it comes to P2P networks.

After reading a number of reviews of bittorent

clients I decided to use Azureus. For the most

part it has worked quite well -- I was able to

overcome a NAT problem and now everything is

all green dots and smilies.

I have one problem however, my upload speeds

are generally very low. Sometimes much lower

(only 10% of) the swarm average when downloading

a torrent. I've read through all the relevant FAQ's

provided by Azureus but I can't seem to figure it

out. Even when I'm done downloading a torrent

and I'm only seeding my upload rate is very low

(I have my upload cap set at 40kB/s and I never

come close, uploading maybe 5kB/s or so.)

How can a fix this problem? I want to maintain a

"1" ration on the sites I use.

Thanks.

SWORDFISH  If you are on dial-up, your upload speeds will likely be 5kbps. What type of connection do you have? What is your average download speed?

To make sure it's not an issue with your internet connection, test your upload speed here: http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
