RipIt | Nov 23 2009 |
MJKPHOTO RipIt now has a different licensing structure. Waiting to hear from the new developer on a license for the version I purchased with the MUPromo. This version only allows 10 rips before requiring registration. I just tried to Rip a movie. The software transferred the data, showed 100% complete, but then sat there spinning, doing nothing. Ultimately failed. Disappointingly, this software doesn't work. (Version 1.3)

Screenwriter | Nov 4 2009 |
MJKPHOTO This release has been available for a long time, so for me it is not an update. I agree it is nice to see it listed. Perhaps this is foretells a new update soon. Movie Magic Screenwriter is an excellent screenwriting program. I've used it for years. The scene outline feature, index cards, and notes are very helpful. Technical support is is readily available at no cost. I've always received quick and useful replies from my tech support requests. There a still a few bugs in the program, such as printing scripts. Depending upon your printer, it may not allow you to take advantage of printing features, such as duplexing or collating. My work around is to export a PDF and print from there. This allows me to print double sided, multiple copies that are collated properly (printed from an HP OfficeJet 6480). There's another bug that causes the program to crash. It doesn't happen a lot, but when it does, data is lost since the auto save feature doesn't catch immediately entered text (unless you just saved your file). When the program crashes, I am able to open a timed backup, and then recreate what was lost. Still it would be nice if the program didn't crash. Those two issues aside, Screenwriter remains my screenwriting program of choice on my Mac. And the free tech support is a great benefit - not only because it is free, tech support is very helpful. RC62 If you launch Yep 2.0 and select "BUY" when prompted for the license it will give you a pop-up with a "discount code". Just follow the instructions. Funny thing though is when I tried to use the code it gave me I got an error that says my purchase ($34)was below the required minimum for the discount code. wtf? Not a great system for upgrading imho. (Version 2.0.0)

Yep | Oct 29 2009 |
TANKKNIGHT I also do not get upgrade option even after selecting the "Buy" option. I'm going back to v1.8. Heck, even if I got the upgrade option I think paying $34 (RC62 states) to upgrade is a little steep with it being only a $5 discount as full price is $39. (Version 2.0.0)

Yep | Oct 30 2009 |
TOM ANDERSEN We are working on an email to notify yep owners of the upgrade system, which will make Yep 2 a $19 US upgrade. This may take a week or so. If you would like to upgrade now, please email ironicsupport@gmail.com with your serial number, and we will email you an upgrade code for you to use. (Version 2.0.0)

$25 for a 5.0 release to 5.06! sneaky bastards! (Version 5.0.6)

TechTool Pro | Oct 5 2009 |
AMBIENT apologies for my incorrect comment. 5.06 is a free update for 5.X users. update to the newer version from within the application. the $25 update is for anyone who wants a new DVD from them. sorry for being incorrect earlier. (Version 5.0.6)

HHEGEDUS If $25 for new DVD makes you mad, how about $59 to upgrade 4.6.2 just so you can run TechTool Pro with Snow Leopard? In fact, it won't even let you repair a disk that has Snow Leopard installed so now my version of TechTool Pro is completely useless. The is the only application so far where I will have to pay for an upgrade in order to keep using it. It makes me so mad I could spit nails! (Version 5.0.6)

TechTool Pro | Nov 5 2009 |
SNOWWHITESICKETTE There are differences between version 4.6.2 and the current version. The interface, for one, is completely overhauled. There are some differences in features. It is not what you've been using, which does still work for the operating system you used to use it with before you upgraded. Any version of TechTool you purchase is only going to work with Mac OS X versions that existed and were supported by that particular TTP version. It's the nature of the beast, unfortunately. (Version 5.0.6)

TechTool Pro | Nov 22 2009 |
SNOWWHITESICKETTE You don't need the DVD. If an eDrive is installed, update the application within the eDrive, and run TTP from there. Or install your OS to a partition on an external FireWire drive, and install TTP there, update to the latest, and boot from the FW drive to run TTP on your drive. (Version 5.0.6)

The Hit List | Sep 3 2009 |
MJKPHOTO I own a copy of The Hit List and like it very much. However, the lack of an iPhone app has kept me with Things. On the upside, using THL has given me ideas on how to better implement Things and so I may just stick with Things even when an iPhone app is released for THL. (Version 0.9.3.16beta)

MJKPHOTO Installed 2.0rc1-255. I can't load any of the modules I have with version 1.4.3. Installing this release candidate only installs the program. Since the interface is so different, I'm not sure how to use the program nor install my modules. So I've reinstalled version 1.4.3. (Version 2.0rc1-225)

MANFRED BERGMANN This version should use the module base that is already installed. Some reports came in that they had to remove their installed modules under: /Users//Library/Application Support/Sword and re-install them using the module installer that comes with the application. BTW: the module installer works the same way as with MacSword 1.4.3. The interface is simple to use. On the left you have your installed modules and bookmarks. Double click on a module and it opens. You can check the context menu on most places for available functions. (Version 2.0rc1-225)

TimeLog | Jul 14 2009 |
MJKPHOTO I started using TimeLog back in Version 3 on my PowerBook. After some initial frustration, I came to learn how the program worked. The developer is very patient and supportive, helping me through some rough spots as I learned the software's logic in handling time tracking. Version 4 was a bit of a shock as the redesign changed the way time was entered, thus requiring spending more time to acclimate myself to this new way of working. Time well spent in the long run. TimeLog and GrandTotal are a good pair for my business. Billing used to be a hassle, but now it is pretty streamlined. I print my time sheets from TimeLog and easily create, edit, and print my invoices from GrandTotal. TimeLog has its quirks. I'm often away from my computer, so I can't use the Time Tracking feature. This requires entering my time manually. I'm not fond of the way time is entered manually. Version 3 handled this better than Version 4 does, in my humble opinion. It is functional, but sometimes the way minutes are entered poses a frustration. I'm not quite sure how to explain it. The release of the iPhone app should prove helpful in tracking time away from my office/computer. This little app is odd as well and took me some time to figure out. It looks like it will support TimeLog well, even though the iPhone app only tracks time and sends that data to the desktop, a oneway sync TO TimeLog on the Mac. Overall, I'm pleased with Timelog and GrandTotal. (Version 4.5)

Things | May 7 2009 |
MJKPHOTO I was having trouble with a "manually updated" version of another Mac developer's software. During our email exchange the developer asked me what version I was running. When I told him, he responded with this: "Unfortunately, MacUpdate seems to scour the net and post any new version they find of any software without ever checking with developers. This means that they end up posting beta software and even pre-release software as if it were the official version." I had a version that he hadn't released yet. I reinstalled the previous "official" version. Since then, I never update manually if the developer's site or software doesn't show the updated version. (Version 1.1.1)

Billings | Mar 25 2009 |
MJKPHOTO Thank you. Nice to see Billings 3.0.4 can now input and edit start and end times! While I'm partial to the way Billings handled invoices and payments, I decided to invest the $$ and time into GrandTotal, which pairs well with TimeLog. After much trial and error (a good manual is so hard to find these days), I finally got my invoice layout just right and have streamlined my invoicing process. Had I known this update was coming so soon, I might have waited to see if this latest release would do the trick using just one program. Neither Billings nor TimeLog/GrandTotal are a perfect fit for my business time/invoice needs. I've used TimeLog to track my time for more than a year and find it easier to work with. GrandTotal has some quirks and is expensive, but the quirks may be explained by my lack of familiarity with the intricacies of the program. (The developer of GrandTotal didn't spend much time on the manual.) But this page is about Billings 3.0.4 and as I've mentioned, Billings does an excellent job tracking invoices and payments! Really. And now you can include start and end times! Billings is an elegant, Mac-like invoicing solution. For those who are looking for such a thing, you'll most certainly benefit from downloading the demo and digging into the program, especially now that the developer has addressed a glaring omission in previous versions. If you take the time to learn how the software works, you'll be rewarded. (Version 3.0.4)

Billings | Mar 8 2009 |
MJKPHOTO Billings will not allow users to manually input exact start and end times per work slip, only duration. Marketplace forum entries show users have been asking for the feature for two years. Currently I'm using Billings to print my invoices but I'm tracking my time in TimeLog and producing my time sheet reports via a Timelog export to Excel. Then I manually create an invoice in Billings. A long, arduous process every two weeks! I had hoped to find a one software solution, but alas that continues to elude me. While I like the look of my invoice created in Billings and creating a manual invoice is fairly easy, my entire process for creating bi-weekly invoices has me frustrated. Billings' lack of exact time tracking (showing start and end times per work slip) is nearly enough to make me dump this program. Why this simple and very important feature was omitted from the program is unclear. I suggest users work through a demo of this program thoroughly before purchasing. It is rather limited in its functionality. (Version 3.0.3)

TimeLog | Nov 6 2008 |
MJKPHOTO I just upgraded to TimeLog 4.3.9, having used version 3 under Tiger previously. Unfortunately, the program crashed when I attempted to enter the date of 10/31/2008. TimeLog stops responding. I finally worked around the problem by entering 7/31/2008 and then changing the 7 to a 10. Until this bug is fixed, I can't use the program. I had to go back to my PowerBook to get my billing done. MJKPHOTO Make sure you try Billings before you buy. Go through the program thoroughly because it has a very set way of doing things and if that doesn't fit your workflow, you will be terribly disappointed, as I am. Billings tracks work through the use of projects and work slips that track time spent, (or flat rates, quantity, expenses, or mileage). But if you have multiple projects and different billing rates per client, you have a problem. For one, Billings doesn't seem to allow multiple projects on one invoice, which is very odd. That means you must have one project per client, with multiple work slips. But I have several projects for one client within any given billing period. Tracking time. Billings has a nice timer feature, but again it is very limiting. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to indicate start and end date/times on invoices, even though you can track that information (but don't expect it to be intuitive or as easy as other reviews have indicated). While the program does produce good looking invoices, designing your own is a cumbersome process. Documentation leaves much to be desired. This program is counter to my workflow and has been most frustrating. Sometimes template driven software is good to have, but not this program... at least not for my business. I wasted my money because I didn't have the time to properly try it out. Don't rely on reviews. Take the time to test it according to your own needs, even if the software is offered at a discounted price. (Version 2.5.5)

STRIDER72 "[I]f you have multiple projects and different billing rates per client, you have a problem." You can set your rate on a per-client basis. I believe you can set the rate on a per-working-slip basis. What is the problem? "[Y]ou must have one project per client, with multiple work slips" Huh??? You can absolutely have multiple projects per client. True, it seems you have to print separate invoices per project, but that doesn't mean you can't have multiple projects! I agree with you on the lack of documentation -- a problem that should be remedied. (Version 2.5.5)
