LUHMANN  This show works well for the shows that are already listed, but the list is not updated frequently and there is no way to add new shows to the list yourself.

iFreeMem
Apr 24 2007

LUHMANN  I've been using this for a while now and I do think it helps. The real question is why? I think it helps out most where there are some programs that have problems in how they handle memory, like Firefox. If this is the case, the big question is whether it doesn't just make more sense to identify those programs and quit and relaunch those programs rather than using iFreeMem. Quitting and relaunching a troublesome app seems like a better solution as it doesn't create a lag in the running of currently running apps as iFreeMem does.

OSCAR74  Memory management is handled by the OS, not the application. No modern OS would give that much control to a lone app, especially one based on a Unix core.

LUHMANN  Strange that the developer hasn't bothered to respond to anyone's comments here. Certainly makes me less willing to try this product. That and the fact that despite major bugs being listed in those comments (I haven't tried it myself) there have been no updates in a year...

LUHMANN  I've been keeping a paperless office for years. I started way back in OS 9 with WorkingPapers, and have tried just about every solution for the mac. Yep is the best one I've ever found, and I personally think it keeps getting better. Certainly worth the price to have this kind of functionality on the Mac!

LUHMANN  The thing is, this app won't have iCal integration until the 0.9 build - and by that time OmniFocus should be out ... so while it looks like a great app, I think I'm going to wait for OF.

Adobe Reader
Dec 11 2006
*....

LUHMANN  Worst, installer, ever.

It won't install. And at Adobe's web site I have the choice of giving them all my personal info to contact tech support, or reading the knowledge base which offers this helpful suggestion:

Reinstall the Download Manager, and then download the order again (Mac OS X only)

1. Save and close all open documents, and quit all Adobe applications.

Note: Don't start any Adobe applications other than the Download Manager until the download is complete.

2. Manually remove the Download Manager. (For instructions, see Remove Adobe Download Manager.)

3. Call Customer Service to reset your product download.

4. Download the order again:

1. On the Adobe website select your region from the top of the web page.

2. Click Sign In or Your Account at the top of the web page.

3. If necessary, enter your Adobe ID and password.

4. Click View Order History.

5. Click the link "purchased in another Store" found near the top of the page.

6. If necessary, enter your Adobe ID and password.

7. Click the link for your Order Number.

8. The download link will be located under your item.

Mellel

****½

LUHMANN  Mellel is a great program ... if you don't need to work in a Windows environment. As great as all its built-in features are, it still does a terrible job at converting between its own format and the .doc format, or rtf format when there are any kind of complex layouts. This is unfortunate, because I would really like to use Mellel otherwise. Instead, I have been forced to switch to NeoOffice which is free and handles .doc natively. NeoOffice is now Aqua as well, meaning it supports built-in OS X GUI features. Still, it is no match for Mellel in other areas. Hopefully the switch to an xml format will eventually lead to improvements in this area.

LUHMANN  Yes, this is much more memory friendly than In the Know, but it needs notification of new posts (maybe a different color), a resizable window, and OPML import/export. Otherwise a great job! (I just started using it, so I'll hold off on a rating.)

In The Know
Sep 2 2006
***..

LUHMANN  After using this for a few weeks I decided to stop. The reason is very simple - even when the Dashboard was not in use, ITK was using up nearly as much memory as Firefox! There are also a number of other quibles I had with the application, such as the lack of OPML support, the inability to lauch links in the background (I have to re-start Dashboard for every link I want to open - and then click to find the next "read more" link, etc. The software also seems to default to checking feeds far more often than the once per hour that is the norm for most sites.

I could really use something to check a couple of frequently used feeds without having to fire up NetNews Wire, but ITK isn't it ...

****.

LUHMANN  This is a nice program. I liked it so much I bought a family license. There really isn't anything you can do here that you can't do online with del.icio.us for free - especially if you have the del.icio.us plugin for Firefox as I do. However, it is still worth buying to have this information stored locally. Unless you have a really fast connection having a local cache of your del.icio.us data makes using it MUCH faster. Now that there is Firefox integration I bought it.

Some issues/suggestions:

1. Too expensive. Should be about 30% less.

2. While it takes up almost no processor power most of the time, when it is communicating with the web it becomes unresponsive. There shouldn't be any spinning wheels on an iBook G4 just because something is downloading.

3. It doesn't handle duplicates. When I use the firefox del.icio.us plugin it pulls existing data so I can simply add new tags or notes to an existing tag. Webnote Happy creates duplicates. This needs to be fixed.

4. The Firefox del.icio.us plugin has some other advantages over webnote happy: (a) it lists my "network", (b) it suggests tags based on how other users have tagged an item, and (c) if I've already selected text in Firefox that is pulled into the note field automatically.

So I get less functionality for a lot more money, but I still paid for it because it is faster than using the Firefox plugin... and I want to support this product in the hopes that it will continue to improve.

LUHMANN  I've been using QIM for nearly a year now. It is simply the best Pinyin input method for OS X, hands down. It is easy to train and thoughtfully designed. If you use Hanyu Pinyin to input Chinese characters (traditional or simplified) you want this software!

GTIE09  the developer sold the rights. I believe he's still going to be developing -- but it's often not the same when you move to a commercial product that was once developed with the passion of a committed shareware developer.

HERVé 5  to be even more blunt: NNW for months has been *50* times slower than the (free) Vienna. I heard that its last release was now faster (easy!) at the price of dropping Spotlight compatibility.

I can say, having *bought* NNW pro, I now have dropped it definitively. NNW was the best, but long ago.

Now, I don't know about Postino speed :-)

LUHMANN  This is very nice. Having a standalone app has some advantages over KGTD. However, it needs to clean up the GUI so that there is only a single window. Also, it needs iCal integration.

Great start!

Yojimbo
Jan 26 2006
***..

LUHMANN  This has a nice feel to it. I especially like the ease with which one can get PDF and WebArchives into the application. However, it lacks the very basic ability to import and export to finder file/folder hierarchies. This functionality is essential to be able to move data between applications easily. If you have hundreds of documents stored in Mori or DevonThink, you can't easily import them to Yojimbo, or export them if you decide to move to something else. For this reason Yojimbo has been relegated to the trash bin after one day of testing. Too bad.

I also think it is a mistake for the application to try to handle specific kinds of data, such as serial numbers and URLs, with pre-defined forms. I much prefer Mori's simplicity in this regard.
