Gimme Email

LOKHEED  @ORBITERAPPS

"Thank you for your comment. Gimme Email is not intended as a "Spam" utility, but rather as a tool to help small business owners collect their own customer's emails and build newsletter lists from those who have asked to be contacted in the past."

Okay, how is that NOT spam? I personally will not shop at places that aggressively sign me up to newsletters or clog up my inbox in unsolicited junk. And it looks like you are helping them upset customers.

Value and respect peoples privacy. Make your money with more sensible and socially responsible programming. As others have said, this is spam software. MU should take a firm stance against promoting these types of products...

Gimme Email
Nov 13 2009

ORBITERAPPS  I don't think you understood my original reply. Perhaps users such as yourself really shouldn't use the program after all; you're right. Since, it's apparent you wouldn't know how not to use it to spam others. I guess the capabilities of the program dictate its intended use. According to you. You fail to understand that those who have signed up to receive communication from a company ACTUALLY want to receive such communication. This program can help those companies keep track of their subscribers by enabling them to retrieve email addresses that have been misplaced or scattered.

This will be my last response regarding this matter, as I believe I've stated my case and the point of my original argument continues to be overlooked by the same mindless drones who are unable to understand how this program could be used for anything other than to spam. But then again, those same people would also fearlessly drown themselves in a water tub, since I guess technically you could.

Get my point? I didn't think so.

Adobe Services Update
Oct 29 2009

LOKHEED  Oh but they say they are working on one, or rather, one is in the pipeline. Apparently, it's the biggest complaint from Adobe users. And it only took them this long to realize there was an issue and work towards addressing it. I stress work because so far nothing has emerge, just paper prototyping it seems. Yeah, for an update system. I love how they play up how hard everything is. Talk to John Nack about bringing Ps into 64bit... He'll rattle off all the things that need to be done. And here I thought Adobe was a billion dollar operation, not some mom and pop shop... Oh yeah, they must be busy collecting children's tears and unicorn horns...

Adobe has gone the way of Windows, in that, it only holds a vast market share because there is simply nothing to compete with it (Obviously with Apple's success, that's changing). I always hope that one day I will wake up and see that Apple has released iDesign (or equivalent). I would drop Adobe in a heartbeat.

Not only have they done nothing but add a handful of new features and apply a thin coat of paint to Ps every new iteration, they don't even pump out service builds. My CS4 doesn't respect Mac OS X's native font settings, where CS3 did. I find it hard to believe no one has reported this problem or I am the only one to suffer it...

They are by far my most hated/most used product on my Mac.

And let's not forget the Universal debacle, the SL/CS3 dilemma, as well as their lacklustre bi-yearly update system, and lastly, their iron-fist grip on the internet with flash.

These guys are complete upstarts that bilk customers without improving their software. There releases seem to focus on "just getting by" and marketing, making you believe you are getting some kind of value in each major release. They have spread so thin that they couldn't pump out one decent product if it was handed to them with a bow wrapped around it.

I'm sorry if this is overly negative, but they ran Ps into the ground long ago. I stuck with them through the PPC version of CS2, then CS3 came and it added Universal support, but not much else, CS4 was a sleeper that again didn't fix many ridiculous UI elements that remained untouched for well over a decade. The addition of GPU seems buggy and rough. It also doesn't work all that well when you want pixel perfection... I'm not expecting much out of CS5...

Stop feeding this awful program. If you come across a stuffit file, email the owner and ask them to replace it with a ZIP. Free and open to everything to extract and compress. And built into OS X natively.

Stop lining the pockets of people that would have you sitting in a dark room with your hands tied. Open a window and say no to monopolization!

No Spin
Aug 12 2009

LOKHEED  Wait a minute. You wanted to make a program that everyone could use. You don't think non-developers can handle commandline? Asking for a password is too much?

First, your program does require the account password. Moreover, sudo does not need the account name, just the password. It's exactly the same sequence as your program. No different. What kind of dev are you? 'Cause you are not filling me with confidence over your programming skills.

Secondly, if you wanted to make an intuitive program that everyone could use, perhaps you should spend more time working on your program and less on MacUpdate spreading FUD, hoping to sell your program that can be accomplished with one line and is built into OS X natively. It is littered with poor and confusing wordin (e.g., Drag the volumes you wish to affect), awkward configuration parameters (e.g., Intervals; what's an interval? Is that minutes, seconds, hours?), and a ridiculous layout (e.g., the purchase button is smashed in with the rest of the UI; is this a must have button? Does it have to clutter the interface?).

Face it. You are charging far too much for a poorly made program. And by the looks of it, you don't seem to have a problem trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the general user to do it. But based on the negative ratings your comments have pulled, I'd say that people are onto you.

Sorry buddy. At the end of the day, your program should be free. And even in that case, I wouldn't recommend it. Using the pmset parameter is the proper way of doing it. No need to drag down your system running another process. That is just poor form. And if you were any kind of developer you wouldn't employ hacks the way you do...

If even one person decides to save their money as a result of my comments, then I am thrilled. I hate watching people get milked out of their hard earned cash through lies and deceit.

*....

LOKHEED  Let's start off with the good. It's sexy. It looks good and is quite easy to use. Mimicking the traditional 'iTunes' interface, it is very pretty.

Let's move onto the bad. It crashes. A lot. Been a problem since it was released and nothing has been done about it. When you have a stack of torrents downloading from poorly seeded sources, and your program crashes, it can be maddening! Without stability improvements, this program seriously cripples itself due to its poor programming.

It is also banned on nearly all private trackers. Anyone with access to these places will find that Xtorrent is completely useless. Works just fine on public trackers (like Pirate Bay).

The lack of updates. This program went for almost a year without an update. That would be fine if there was nothing to update, but the crashes are well documented and ignored by the brash and arrogant developer (David Watanabe). So be prepared for little to no support when you shell out your hard earned cash.

And lastly, the ugly. Paul Watanabe. This guy is infamous in the Mac developer community and with good reason. Let's take his current pricing structure. v1 adopters were promised "updates for life." Well, they got screwed. Paul released v2 and instead of honouring his commitments to the people that pay his bills, he forked the version, choosing to release a "crippled version" and a "pro version". The crippled version went to the public that either adopted the program from v1 or never paid for it. The pro version costs money.

Take your chances, but when you deal with a jerk, eventually you will be screwed. If the built in search function or general look of the program is enough incentive to jump in the pool with the shark, then by all means, plop down your hard earned money.

He has a point. And he's not the first person to complain about the sea of micro-updates. But your answers all seem to be the same: Turn off autoupdates.

Perhaps you should start listening to these people and packing more changes and features into each update, thus thinning them out.

Yes it's nice to have active development, it really is, but it's also nice to have developers who listen and care about their customers.

Obviously, if people are complaining about updates being too frequent, there is a problem. After all, who complains about updates? Think about!

But Macaroni works automatically and works well, too.

Good question about Snow Leopard compatibility, though. I just emailed the developer about it.

CTKMND  On an external Western Digital Elements connected to an Late 2008 Unibody MacBook Pro 'pmset' doesn't work - the drive spins down regardless. So using something like this is essential. Just because it works for you, doesn't guarantee it will work for everyone else though most times it may.

Oh, and btw. Checking the box in "energy settings" prefs panel sets the spindown time to 180 a.k.a. 3 hours. So, no it doesn't in truth "turn it off" but most people/computers will have some disk activity in that timeframe anyway so it's seldom discovered.

Coda
Mar 18 2009

LOKHEED  Well said. I find Coda to be an excellent tool, but it seriously cripples me workflow. I emailed them a while back pointing out one tiny modification that would really help in my coding (better highlighting of the line you are working on). I thought the implementation was simple and elegant. The develop that replied thanked me and that is the last I heard of it. I have sent in bug reports and after 3 iterations, they still haven't been fixed. Perhaps only a small portion of us suffer from the bug, but still, it would be nice to see some movement.

All in all, I won't expect them to change much. They seem pretty set in their ways; convinced they know what's best, so I have stopped trying. I will use it because I paid for it, but if something works better, then I am gone (and so is my recommendation). I am closely watching Espresso, but there is so little movement on that, that it will take a long before it replaces Coda. Dreamweaver is not an option.

A reluctant Coda user.

LOKHEED  What is this? The first program made by Nazis?

a) You can't buy a copy. You licence them based on 6 month, 1 year, and 2 year contracts. After that, your licence expires and you are left with a worthless program. Licensing is grossly overpriced too boot. $20 for a 6 month licence? I have a feeling many customers aren't going to catch the this and be plenty upset when their time's up.

b) The demo is worthless. Tried to remove some cache files (that I ended up doing manually with 4 clicks) and it spit out a warning: You only have 200.0 left. 200 what? KBs? Because the files summed up to a whopping 86 MBs. Moreover, the program lists items as Kb and Mb... what am I slimming? KiloBYTES or Kilobits? Because they are very different... Sloppy coding.

c) The program duplicates many free or far less expensive alternatives, but adds nothing of its own. The interface is tired, plain, and generally mundane. The features are lackluster and unlike XSlimer, provides no guard against rendering your program useless. Thank goodness for Apple's Time Machine.

All in all, the price is the biggest failing. A way to milk the consumer without really giving back much. The features are boring and old. The delivery hackneyed and tired. Look elsewhere folks... there is absolutely nothing to see here!

-Bugs on ordering bookmarks (through drag and drop) made me lose some (just disappeared).

-Back button greyed out for some reason (as mentioned by another poster, works sometimes, others it doesn't.

-View in browser button does nothing.

-Using small sized toolbar icons works, except for refresh button?

-Default transcript window is too large and rolls past desktop cut-off. Upon re-launch it shows up on top (with the same effect).

Now the gripes. Why the list view needs size 12 font is beyond me. A standard 10px font size would have been ideal.

I'm not sure if this one window does it all philosophy (or rather design choice) is going to fly. There is a reason why all other FTP programs are dual window. I sort my files by date and when I update client's websites, it's easy to see what new file I need to upload. I don't think I want to micro-manage through the Finder and then my FTP app. I think this was a very poor design choice by the author.

All in all, I am not sure how much usability testing went into this program (not beta testing, usability testing). After almost 2 years of hype and development, it is still plagued with many of the bugs the betas had and doesn't offer enough bang for my buck. I'll stick with Transmit for now... but competition is always good and wish this product the best... it's just for me right now.

LOKHEED  I have used Overflow for a long time and upon its initial release, I was blown away at the interface and general look of the application. I expected great things to come, but was content with what I had.

Over a year later and Overflow still looks the same. It's appearance is now dull and dated. The new features were sparingly added and updates were far and few between (some fixing the same bug over and over; e.g., apps launching in the back). With the release of stacks, Overflow certainly took a hit. But rather than get creative and offers some nifty features, it remains the same, stagnant application.

I support indie developers, but Overflow needs a facelift (perhaps HUD) and something to win me back. Sadly, it doesn't look like anything is in the works for an Overflow v3.0... nothing major in the pipes. I hope the author surprises, but at this point, it just doesn't have enough over stacks to warrant running a separate process to launch some applications.

Also, it would be great if the actual program had a facelift. A HUD interface would make it a lot more polished and appealing (something like CoverSutra).

I very much love the program, but feel it is not very refined. I will continue to use it and support the author, but hope he has some plans on making it more efficient and more polished :)

Great work on an App that should have been included with OS X ;)

LOKHEED  Don't keep proprietary programs like this alive. Stop using .sit and .sitx archive types and use the built in .zip compression tool in Mac OS X.

People shouldn't have to pay to archive and unarchive your compressed files!

LOKHEED  It seems the developers maxim is aesthetics first, functionality second.

After burning a handful of coaster that were deemed to be burned successfully, I have lost trust in the program. My greatest fear is burning a disc and coming back to it at a later time to find that I cannot retrieve the data. I also do not have the time or the wanting to verify the contents manually after a burn.

The program looks great, and the smoke is a neat feature, but who watches their program burn a disc. I set my burn process and continue with my work (or play). It sucks resources that I would rather have put to better use. Sadly it seems as if the smoke is the biggest selling point.

It does have some genuinely attractive features (e.g., spanning), but it has many other genuinely less attractive problem areas (the small window size--especially on those of us using high resolution monitors--the backend burning problems, and others).

I could not recommend the program for the price they are asking.

*****

LOKHEED  Every now and then you get a program that comes out of left field, doesn't deliver anything Earth shattering or revolutionary, and embeds itself on your system, to be used on a daily basis.

Unarchiver is such a program.

A small open source (un)archiving tool that handles a plethora of file types... and does so elegantly and with simplicity.

You won't find any bells and whistles here. No groundbreaking, revolutionary eyecandy. But what you will find is a solid program that does what it is supposed to.

It may crash now and then. It may not support that one elusive archive format, but it's still under development. And for all those that deal in open source already know, is something entirely special in its own right.

Let me congratulate the developer of this program and encourage those that use and feel the same was as I do, to speak up and let the developer know how much his work is being appreciated.

LOKHEED  You have got to be kidding. I might as well help that guy in Africa get his dad's funds out of the country...

Total scam. Free alternatives and the program has about 5 lines of code... if you count comments...

Pathetic attempt to try and get our hard earned cash. Do yourself a favour and save your money.

This guy should be blacklisted!

LOKHEED  I appreciate the program, but the author has had how long to come up with a Universal version? Even reading some of the bug reports/problems makes me wonder how well this guy can actually program.

It looks like the latest one doesn't even open.

VERYCARLA  If you think you can do better, go for it.

And FYI, there IS a UB version available via the Quinn forum. It's a few revisions behind, but it's UB, for whatever good that does you. It'll launch slightly faster, I guess.

If you REALLY want a universal version of Quinn, why don't you do the developer a favour and buy him a MacBook? He says very plainly that he doesn't have an Intel Mac to work on, and that's why there's no official universal version. Either buy him a MacBook or shut up.

Oh, and dude? The game is FREE. Complaining about free software is like being given a free pizza and then whining about the toppings. It's just lame.

ZETSURIN  I don't understand the mentality of people who come into someone's MU page purely to suggest an alternative application. I think it's a retarded thing to do, and often is done by people who wouldn't have a clue how to write an application themselves and thus have no appreciation for what's involved. It's a slap in the face to the develpers who spend many hours writing software like this!

BUMBLEB  Zetsurin >

To a point, I agree with you. It is a slap in the developers face to point potential customers in another direction, ie. to a competitors product.

However, I myself often look through the reviews to see if there are any displeased users, and if, then what are they recommending instead.

It's harsh, but fair. If there's a fire in a free market - the users will alert others of the smoke.

This app has less of a following than AppZapper, and so could/should aptly be priced around 6-7 $ in order to entice a purchase and compete with AppZapper.

JEEPEE  Permanent Eraser uses the Gutmann-method instead of the DoD-method used by Secure Empty trash.

The Gutmann-method uses 35 special passes, which makes it absolutely impossible to recover data. The DoD-method uses 7 special passes, enough to make it extremely difficult (if not impossible) to retreive shredded data.

The Panther-beta had 3 options to choose from: Empty trash, Shred 7 times and Shred 35 times. The last choice was removed, I guess it took too long. :-)

Ladies and gentlemen. The first blind Mac OS programmer. Take a bow.

You should pay me to use this. Now, if you will excuse me, I have to wash out my eyes with vinegar and hopefully try and get past this traumatic experience.

The WORST program I have ever seen to date. Congrats. Who cares how anything works when it looks this bad. You should be banned from your computer!

**...

LOKHEED  The program is responsive and loads fine. Then the headaches appear.

A registration screen that prevents the use of the program based on a time interval.

Does not decompress gzip, join files with more than 25 segments, needs to call home to verify serial. I can't even assess if the program meets my needs because there are no features available in the trial version. The author seems to have done a good job at crippling the software enough to make someone NOT want it. All I experience is frustration and that makes me move on to alternatives.

The UI is grotesque. The icons are crude and terrible at the same time. There is no aesthetic appeal to this piece of software. Even a blind person could not stomach to use this program. So where is my $20 USD going? Certainly not into QA.

Pass this one. Much of the integral structure is freeware (par2, unrar, tar, etc.) and PPC coded. The interface may be Universal, but that says little on the speed of joining or decompressing...which I might have been able to test if I wasn't locked out of it.

Terrible way to try and scam $20 from hard working people. Don't expect this one to win awards or look good on your system. Just terrible.

LOKHEED  A predictive space saving report feature would be very welcome. You are notified of how much space you saved after deleting the language/keyboard/arch you selected, but not informed before hand. If possible, it would be helpful to include a feature to report how much space you WILL save before you have deleted anything.

Good program otherwise.
