Battlefront Mod Installer
Feb 10 2008

LIKOS  Hi,

Any chance of getting the FSmod team ( http://www.fsmod.com/ ) to give you the unpacked files for the upcoming 1.2?

For the last version I used Parallels and pointed the exe installer to the hidden directory. A less than elegant solution. Also you have to have a Win license to do this so it alienates allot of potential mod users.

Thanks for making a GUI.

LIKOS  Will this work with a bootcamp partition?

(I know a bootcamp partition can be converted to work but I wan't to keep the bootcamp partition and sometimes use it without rebooting.)

If it parallels can use a bootcamp partition what are your experiences using this method?

MUDFLAPPER  Yes, you can use a Boot Camp partition. I do. However, keep in mind that if you use a Boot Camp partition, you can't take virtual machine snapshots. That doesn't bother me one bit, tho.

A J BENAMU  Be very careful if you use the BootCamp partition with Parallels or Fusion. Why?

If either one crashes they can really mess it up. It has happened to me before with both programs to a point of having to reinstall Windows.

MUDFLAPPER  While I can't say I've had a bad crash like the last poster, I have had a couple crashes, Windows crashes mind you, where I had to restart Windows and the OS automatically performs drive tests. Never had anything worse than that happen, yet.

But that just underlines the fact that when you use a Boot Camp partition as your Parallels startup drive, there is no undo. Your information isn't protected. It's just like running Windows on a real PC.

LIKOS  Well in my attempt to find a link proving my point I disproved much of it. It turns out blue/green is best for preserving night vision. (like the light used in night vision goggles.) Also what you intend to do at night will dictate the color you want. (I guess this is where user defined presets come in :)

LIKOS  yes any light can be seen at night.

I'm sorry if my previous post led someone to believe that. As a matter of fact soldiers on special opps missions cover anything reflective and do not wear (or cover) watches that have illuminated dials. Any light at close distances can reveal your location.

That said red light travels the shortest distance. So if a device is set to maximum dim, red, and only on for a short time it MINIMIZES the risk of exposure. It does NOT eliminate the risk. On a battlefield it would still be a huge risk.

Also red light does not affect night vision so you will be able to see normally without the need to readjust to darkness. Pilots in WWII wore red goggles at night if they were up and about in order to preserve their night vision. If they were called in to defend the airstrip or into a sortie they were able to hop into a cockpit and fly out.

In my case it will prevent me from stubbing my toe on the bedpost. Not quite so glamorous but at least I don't wake the wife or kids to cursing:)

I hope that sorts its out. I don't want a soldier cranking up a laptop and thinking no one can see him because its set to red.

LIKOS  This is awesome! I changed the white color to red, to preserve night vision while surfing. i also decreased the brightness (got 30 min more runtime from the battery!)

i have been wanting something like this for some time. i'm glad i took the time to search last night.

thanks for a great app! (btw disabling shadows does not seem to work. but everything else worked great.)

LIKOS  That is awesome. I am usually hesitant in making requests from freeware writers. I don't feel I have a right to ask for upgrades. (unless the developer specifically asks for ideas.)

I appreciate the work. I was about to start messing around with color profiles to see if I could get an acceptable red picture that way. Even if I did get a picture I like that way its a bit of a chore to switch back and forth.

Thanks.

LIKOS  I really would like an application that would change everything onscreen to a shade of red. That way I could use my laptop at night without compromising my night vision. Soldiers might also like a blue option since blue light doesn't travel as far at night.

BEN_MARKO  Actually all light regardless of color can be seen easily at night. I've been to Afghanistan and Iraq and no one uses Macs at all in a tactical environment. Marines and soldiers alike aren't even allowed to smoke because that tiny red light can be seen far away!

LIKOS  Well I don't have a Mac Book yet but this software makes the purchase all the more tempting. Hey if I drop it can you sense the sudden intense shock and have it make the sound of the Death Star exploding? (You think they would get mad if I tested this out at the Apple store? After all I think it deserves a proper review.)

LIKOS  This would be great if:

1. the save command would append the date and time to the filename or a sequence number. (filename20060219 2:05.jpg)And only work if there have been changes made to the file. (Command-s only saves if there have been changes by default but I don't know if this will be the default if the filename is appended)

2. It was configurable as a pref pane.
