LEOPOLDBLOOM Indeed. You should pay attention to what people are writing. I don't think that anyone said 5.9.1 was Acid3 compliant etc., though several posters (including myself) mentioned the pre-release build of 5.9.2 which is Acid3 compliant and does use Safari 4's WebKit. (Version 5.9.1)

LEOPOLDBLOOM Try Steer Mouse as an alternative to this. I just got an MX Revolution, and after trying LC I was back to Steer Mouse within 5 minutes. (Version 2.7)

RipIt | Mar 17 2009 |
LEOPOLDBLOOM Funny that you're having so much trouble with RipIt. I know that most of the issues with Toast were supposed to have been fixed. I haven't had any problems with RipIt in quite some time. It rips everything and its output works fine for me in DVD2oneX and HandBrake (usually, though I also use Toast 10 occasionally). Reviews on FastDVDCopy are very mixed, and it hasn't been updated since Nov. 2007, so, regardless of anything else, I could see it having issues with newer disks--DVD rippers need to be consistently updated in order to keep up with copy protection. Plus it's 100 bucks. Whatever works for you I guess, but I can't see that app being a viable alternative to RipIt for most people, considering the price and its apparent lack of current development. ClickToFlash | Mar 14 2009 |
LEOPOLDBLOOM I was having the same problem at first, but after updating to the latest release and using the new option-click method, the whitelist seems to be sticking. Are you up to date? Are you right-clicking on the flash marker or are you using option-click? You can also access the whitelist through Safari's application menu and see what's staying and what's not. Remember too that this app is still in development and probably still has a few bugs to be worked out. (Version 1.4fc3)

OmniWeb | Mar 12 2009 |
LEOPOLDBLOOM I'm so glad to see development of OmniWeb picking up again. I used it as my default browser for a while, and the reason I stopped was because development was extremely slow, and it was always lagging months behind Safari in its WebKit version. Now that development has picked right back up, I'm going to give OmniWeb another run. The 5.9.2 SneakyPeak builds are already using Safari 4's WebKit, and they are blazing fast. The things that set OmniWeb apart for me are its superior control over browsing, particularly site preferences, and the tab side-bar. (Version 5.9.1)

GlimmerBlocker | Mar 12 2009 |
LEOPOLDBLOOM I'm very pleased with this app on the whole. It's never caused problems for any of my apps, and I like having a good blocker for Safari that's not an Input Manager. If you find it's not blocking enough ads, enable the extra filters that come with GB and check on its web page for more. There is now a filter posted there that covers a bunch of stuff the default filters don't. The only issue I have is that if you're running Little Snitch's network filter all the time, every web page you try to visit goes to it through GB and so isn't included in any browser exception rule. This can be a pain, but since I don't use LS that much, it's not a big deal for me. (Version 1.3.3)

GlimmerBlocker | Aug 23 2009 |
MATTISME Because all traffic is routed through the GlimmerBlocker Proxy, Little Snitch is entirely bypassed (as soon as you set "allow" in LS for GB traffic). If you are a LS user, proceed with caution. Otherwise, GB is an excellent piece of software, and the only reason I can't use it is because of my extensive use of Little Snitch. (Version 1.4)

ClickToFlash | Mar 11 2009 |
LEOPOLDBLOOM Awesome plugin. This update adds a ton of features and options that I'm really glad to see. I also love that this is a WebKit plugin instead of an Input Manager, so there's less risk of instability and incompatibility with new browser versions. Thanks to the devs. (Version 1.4fc2)

Melatonin | Mar 11 2009 |
LEOPOLDBLOOM This would undoubtedly be a useful little tool, but I feel compelled to point out that there's another free app called SmartSleep that can be set to automatically revert to the slower sleeping method (writes contents of memory to disk) when the battery is below 20%, which is, IMO, a little safer than risking losing anything you may have forgotten to save. CopyPaste Pro | Mar 9 2009 |
LEOPOLDBLOOM A nice update to an excellent app. This is by far the best of all the multiple clipboard apps I've tried. I'm a little confused, though, as to why the developer released a series of 1.1 betas then suddenly jumped to 2.0. Oh well, it's apparently a free update for 1.x licence holders, though it doesn't seem to say that anywhere. (Version 2.0)

PDF Browser Plugin | Mar 6 2009 |
LEOPOLDBLOOM Very nice plugin. Far more versatile than the default PDF viewer in Safari. The inability to use the scroll wheel is a bit of a nuisance, but it does have grab scrolling, which means you don't have to go to the scroll bar whenever you want to move the window. In conclusion, I'll take the additional features and live without the scroll wheel. Thanks to the dev for making this plugin free for non-commercial use. (Version 2.3)

SafariStand | Mar 6 2009 |
LEOPOLDBLOOM I really like SafariStand, but it seems to be conflicting a little with Glims (i.e. inexplicable crashing of Safari 4 that only occurs when both are installed). Stand still offers some very nice features that Glims doesn't, but if I must choose only one, I think it will have to be Glims. Here's to hoping the developer of one or both of these plugins addresses compatibility issues. (Version 4.0L166)

Perian's Type Installer | Mar 5 2009 |
LEOPOLDBLOOM It's not really clear what you're asking. Like the developer said, Perian's Type Installer doesn't add any functionality to QT. But, if you're using QT (including Pro), Perian _does_ add functionality. QT Pro has many more options for converting, exporting, etc. than the regular version, but it still suffers from the same codec limitations. Perian solves this for you by adding a large variety of codecs to QT's library, making it a VLC-like media player that will handle just about any file format or codec you throw at it. Perian's type installer simply allows your computer to recognize file types that QT doesn't support by default as QT files. For example, if you have an MKV file and it's set to open with QT (which will play it with Perian installed), it will still be described as a UNIX Executable file in the Finder because it's not a supported format by default. Perian's Type Installer causes files like this to be properly recognized and labelled as QT files. (Version 2.4.3_TigerFixed)

SafariStand | Mar 5 2009 |
LEOPOLDBLOOM I haven't used SafariStand in a while, but I think it leaves some stuff in ~/Library/Safari. You could also use the Finder to search your entire hard drive for files and folders containing "stand." (Version 4.0L166)

Glims | Mar 4 2009 |
LEOPOLDBLOOM I agree that ad-blocking is an essential feature for any browser, but I find most of the ad-blocking plugins for Safari either a little unstable (i.e. SafariBlock, Safari Adblock) or not frequently updated (i.e. PithHelmet). If you like Glims better than Saft, try using GlimmerBlocker for ad-blocking. It's a proxy so doesn't need to be updated every time Safari is and doesn't cause stability issues. I guess if you want ad-blocking in the same package, Saft still has the edge, but Glims has the advantage of not requiring a silly update process every time there's a new release, and adding GlimmerBlocker will give you the essential ad-blocking functionality without having to install another InputManagers hack. As a side note, I also suggest the Click-to-Flash WebKit plugin for Flash blocking if you're into that. Again, since it's not a hack, it doesn't threaten Safari's stability. (Version 1.0b14)

Opera | Mar 3 2009 |
LEOPOLDBLOOM Opera is functionally very impressive, but no matter how hard I try, I can't get past its disgusting Mac interface. I'd like to give Opera a more serious spin, so I really hope the interface sees some improvement in the future. Also, I don't know how easily solvable this is, but the developers of 1Password say that Opera compatibility is impossible due to its architecture. Allowing the inclusion of such a popular add-on probably wouldn't hurt Opera's popularity on the Mac platform. For me, lack of 1Password in a browser pretty much precludes it from default use. CGC I try Opera from time to time and think it's an excellent browser. If th GUI wasn't diobolical and absolutely horrendous I'd use it as my primary browser. As it stands, it needs a huge facelift (reminds me of GraphicsConverter by Lemke Software) (Version 9.64)

Glims | Mar 3 2009 |
LEOPOLDBLOOM This is an excellent plugin that has made Saft completely redundant. It brings essential features to Safari, especially single-window mode, session saving, and enhanced searching, at no cost and with very active development. The work by the Glims developers in regards to the Safari 4 beta was, in my opinion, beyond reproach. Basic compatibility was achieved the same day and the more troublesome features were fully functional within a week. There are paid plugins that make you wait longer than this (especially PithHelmet). Glims is also very stable for an InputManagers plugin. I combine Glims with GlimmerBlocker and Click-to-Flash to round out my Safari browsing experience. (Version 1.0b14)

Magnifique | Mar 2 2009 |
LEOPOLDBLOOM This is a nice theme changer--free, works as advertised, and has a nice selection of themes available. Just a heads-up on the Aqua Inspirat 2 theme (and probably any theme that includes app mods): back up any application that it's going to modify! The read-me included with the theme download tells you as much, but if you download from within Magnifique you won't see it. When I uninstalled this theme, it failed to remove some of its GUI modifications from Mail, and I had to replace the app bundle to get rid of them. (Version 2.0)

MondoMouse | Mar 1 2009 |
LEOPOLDBLOOM I didn't know that either. It's interesting but doesn't take much away from MondoMouse, since the point of it is to be able to move/resize without having to click on the title bar or resize handle. Thanks, though, for pointing that out. It may come in handy. (Version 1.4.2)

LEOPOLDBLOOM You're right. It is fishy. Not only do these guys market the same product under numerous brand names, they also write fake reviews and post forum comments promoting their own products without identifying themselves (the comments are all written in bad English and make ridiculous, unqualified statements about how "powerful" their products are). Don't expect any action from MacUpdate, though. They put an iSkysoft product on the MU Promo yesterday and didn't retract it despite numerous comments about how sketchy and disreputable both the developer and the product are. (Version 1.0.3.3)
