RealPlayer
Jul 28 2009

LANCE_BAKER  More often than not, Webmasters choose RealPlayer because it is easy to set it up to block downloads. They may not use it in this manner for all files or for all of their pages, but if they want to block downloading of any of their multi-media files, RealPlayer is tops for that, so it becomes their player of choice. BBC is a classic example of a site that blocks some downloads by using Real files. There is always a way around it, but for Real files, it is not an easy way, so most people give up and are unable to download. Yes, Windows Media Player is much more popular for home computers, but it often has quality problems and isn't easy to setup for blocking downloads. QuickTime is just not popular enough. Most Windows users (not you geeky guys who read this forum, but the unwashed masses) don't install QuickTime unless they buy an iPod.

IconCreator

LANCE_BAKER  When I launch IconCreator, it presents a small window titled "Get Specific Finder Items" with two columns, "Name" and "Path". No items appear in either column. There is a "+" and "-" sign at the lower left of the small window and a "Cancel" and "Continue" button. The only menu at the top bar is "IconCreator" and when I click on that, there is no drop list. If I click the "Continue" button, the small window disappears and an even smaller window appears called "Scale Images". It allows a choice between "To Size (pixels)" and "By Percentage". The default is 480px and 100%. Again, the buttons are "Cancel" and "Continue", so I click "Continue. The very small window disappears and is replaced by a small window that says "You have successfully created an icon using IconCreator which can be located on your desktop." I keep my desktop very sparse, so it's easy to see no icon is there and if there were, I would be very curious to see what it is, as I didn't get a chance to select any picture from which to make an icon.

This app doesn't work and doesn't have a Help menu. The ReadMe PDF says "All you have to do is open IconCreator and select any picture from your computer, IconCreator will create your icon and neatly place it on your desktop." It is probably quite intuitive for the developer but not for anyone else.

LANCE_BAKER  It's so simple it ... doesn't work. No help from the ReadMe which is just a repeat of the "How cool it is" blurb on the Website. No other documentation, no Help files. It opens to a small windows with "Select Theme Variant" button. I clicked on that and navigated to my collection of ShapeShifter style GUIkits. All files are greyed so I can't select any of them.

LANCE_BAKER  Even with all three files named the same and in the same folder, it makes a useless file with all zeros for all timestamps and garbage ascii characters for the dialog. Doesn't anyone else make a sun-to-srt converter that actually works?

LANCE_BAKER  OK, named all three files same, put all three files in same folder. Result is..... same. All zeros for time, ascii garbage for dialog. Any other suggestions?
