LAMPOON  After using iVideo Converter for some days now I can do a proper review.

Here it goes . . . .. .

The first time you launch iVideo Converter it asks to download some video libraries. This only takes about 3 seconds so it is no hassle.

I got prompted with a registration request afterwards. Not yet mister. . not yet . . . :-)

With the two minutes limit I could not test full length videos but it was not needed for some quick testing.

Dragged in several different movies files. And clicked on the Convert button without any changes to the settings.

Converting started and after some minutes it was finished. All converted movies played with QT and VLC without a problem. Quality by default was generally good to very good.

After this I changed some options like 2-pass encoding, resolutions, bitrates and more.

Converting was again flawless but iVideo Converter sometimes prompted me with a message saying the selected bitrate was too low. It seems when the bitrate per pixel is lower then 0.15 it gives you this warning. Actually this is a good thing because lower values gives poor quality anyway. It is a pity it didn't ask me to change the bitrate at this point. You have to stop converting and change the bitrate and start converting again. A minor issue.

At this point I registered iVideo Converter. I was already convinced :-)

I have converted a lot of full length videos with Ivideo Converter and never got big issues.

The X360 presets also works perfect (yes - I am a X360 fan shame on me). It gave a very good quality and no hiccups. FYI VisualHUB and Handbrake could not deliver me good X360 movie file ones.

There are so many options to deal with you get lost some how. A good documentation is a must! This needs to be taken care off asap

My conclusion:

Ivideo Converter is a very decent converter lacking some documentation. Quality is by default high but you can create very high (and very low) results in no time after tweaking some options.

The developer told me the next release will be Intel only. Bummer, because I am using PPC at the moment. But I do understand his point of view. A Intel optimized version will have a hugh speed increase and to be honest . . . ... PPC is game over when OSX10.6 finally hits the streets.

For me it is time to go out and buy a Intel (bwaaaaak) iMac. :-/

LAMPOON  I am a producer/audio engineer for about 18 years. Used a lot of audio editors for both Windows and Mac.

Sinds I use Wave Editor I never looked back on the Wavelab and Soundtrack Pro days. Wave Editor is clearly the best for editing with the revolutionary layers features.

Fantastic flexible audio editing mastering can be achieved. AU and VST plugin support is very good.

This app could easily cost a bucket load of dollars but at this price it is real bargain.

Forget about Wavelab and Soundtrack Pro. Both very professional editors but Wave Editor is on par but has the edge with the layer features.

A must buy for every musician/audio engineer !

LAMPOON  Build on VisualHUB you should expect something good. So I gave this a try.

First thing I tried (simple mp4 file) : AppleScript Error "adcancedvideovox" of doesn't understand the swtich text message. (-1708)

And it freezes Filmredux

Second thing I tried (simple mkv file) : Start converting ... waiting ... waiting .. after 5 minutes ... no response from Filmredux. Freezes without a error message.

Thirth thing I tried (simple MPG file) : Applescript error

In short ... not usable in any sense. Still a lot of work to do I guess.

BKING1  Lampoon-

We're not quite to converting to mp4 yet. VisualHub's Developer dumped the projects on sourceforge and didn't give us any formats to work with. Please hang on while we work out the other formats

Thanks,

Ben

LAMPOON  Previously I used VLC and Flip4Mac but after I tried this I deleted VLC and Flip4Mac.

This is a much better codec lib for Quicktime (also works with Quicktime-X).

VLC did not play all my xvid movies with correct sound (hell, sometimes without) but Perian played them all flawless !

I can highly recommend this video codec lib !! All you need imo

MISHA  Agreed. But don't trash VLC so quickly... if you ever move on to media encoded with x264 and stored in a .mkv container, Perian forces you to pre-load the whole thing in QuickTime before you can watch it (which can take several minutes depending on your Mac and file size). VLC will play throws straight away.

LAMPOON  Indeed, the default samplerate for audio is a little too low (set to 128kbps). When using multi channel audio streams it is simple not enough.

Luckily you can change the samplerate very easy. I mainly use 196kbps and that does the trick very well indeed. Audio passthru is not needed when you you do this.

@ Developer: please upscale the audio bitrate to at least 196kpbs as default. This is much better.

LAMPOON  This one fine app. Kinda Activity Monitor on steroids. :-)

Thumbs up and highly recommended.

FYI: also works fine with OS X 10.6

LAMPOON  Tried it on my MacBook Pro 15 OSX 10.5.7

Installed all libraries (is there a uninstall??). I can confirm they most are outdated.

Converting about 10 MP4 files. 2 work and all the rest failed for various reasons. Some had bad quality, some had wrong aspect ratio and for one it just freezed the app.

Also tried to stitch two files together and it just stops reacting after a while doing nothing. Had to use Force Quit.

2 pass coding also has issues. The first time I used it it seems to work. Second time it just responded on top 'Conversion Complete' but nothing happened.

Also, numerous times the main window just vanished. The menu was there but I could not show the main window. Tried everything but nothing helped except quitting and restarting.

No offense to the developer but this just does not work very well. And I agree with the other users saying this is not usable and certainly not a app to recommend at this stage.

For the sake of it I also checked this if it works on my iMac 24" with the latest build of OS X 10.6 10A421.

And there are indeed problems. Seems it has some issues.

The advertising said: 'In the spirit of VisualHub' ... to be honest? No it is not!

Someone else mentioned Handbrake and imo this is the best free converter out there. FFMPEGX and iVideo Converter comes to a mutual second place but they are not free.
