LMP  I disagree. Just because a vocal minority does not care for XviD/AVI support, does not mean that there is no silent majority that wants this support.

Look at it this way: how many audio applications support .ogg and AAC, but not MP3?

AVI is the MP3 of video. It plays anywhere, and its quality is good enough for most users. Dropping support for AVI is like iTunes dropping support for MP3 in favor of AAC. It might be a good move from a purely technological point of view, but how many people prefer MP3 because it's more compatible?

LMP  I'm not arguing in favor of one format over another. I just find AVI/XviD very convenient because it's supported by almost all stand-alone video playback devices and DVD players. MKV and H264 are clearly superior from a technological standpoint, but I have yet to see any DVD player that supports them.

As for Handbrake, I often see glitches and artifacts in its XviD conversion. I don't mind them very much, but it would be nice if the dev team fixed these glitches in the XviD encoder instead of completely dropping support for the format. Also, I'd like to see an improved 64-bit version of the Handbrake XviD encoder which could give me faster encoding speeds.

LMP  I just found out that according to the dev team, this will be the last version of Handbrake that will support AVI and XviD (http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=12464).

I find this very disappointing, because my main use for Handbrake was to create backups of my DVDs in XviD/AVI files which were compatible with my DVD player. Without further development on this front, Handbrake will become useless to me, and I will have to look for a more clunky and/or commercial solution, like FFmpegX.

If you also feel that there should be some support for XviD/AVI in future versions of Handbrake, I suggest you contact the dev team, or post your comments here.

MISHA  What features are you looking for that 0.9.3 doesn't provide for your XviD encodes? You can always keep using 0.9.3 just for that purpose.

XviD is 10 year old technology, everything is moving to 264. The MKV container is also vastly superior to AVI.

LMP  "Links into your iWork Numbers models to run detailed Monte Carlo analy"

I love this description: concise and totally incomprehensible. The way I understand it, this software allows you to import detailed numbers from the Monte Carlo Rally in your butt! It gets better every time I read it!

UMIJIN  It's Greek to you, because it's an advanced tool for scientists and mathematicians. If you don't understand what it is, then it's not for you. Just move along.

If you want to know Monte Carlo methods are, G••gle it. These methods are used to generate random numbers for simulation purposes. Wikipedia lists a several ways they are used.

LMP  Very nice tool for creating video tutorials, but way overpriced for most home users, and version 1.0.x still lacks the features that would make it a great choice for professionals who could afford it.

Personally, I'd buy it if it it was $50 or less just to encourage the developers to add more features, but $100 is way too much for my budget.

ROY VAN DER WONING  Please explain how it is the same.

Imagine having to move all files in a certain folder into subfolders based on the first (few) letter(s) of the names of those files. For this, one would need to manually create countless smart folders to group the files, manually create all target folders and manually move the grouped files into those folders.

Compare this to a few clicks in TBMFM.

BMEEKS24  I am downloading now - but I hope this is what I am looking for. I am trying to merge all of my iTunes folders from three windows machines and my MacBook. There are many files that are duplicated and I want one comprehensive backup on a single external drive. I hope this does the trick.

If so - then it will also be great for merging the images from the same set of computers. I have digital pictures from 1998 to present and (depending on who in the house downloaded them to the PC) the naming convention is all but standard.

Again - I hope this is the holy grail I am looking for!!!! But that is why it is different (in theory) from Finder.

LMP  Very nice little app. It would be even more useful if it allowed the user to add custom search-and-replace functions. For example, find double spaces and replace with single space, or find certain accented characters and replace them with non-accented versions.

It would also be nice if the auto line splitting feature took dialog dashes into consideration. For example for the line "- Knock, knock. - Who's there?" it should split the line just before the second dash.
