Speed Download
Apr 22 2008
*****

KUKKIS  With latest update the Speed Download ROCKS! In order to achieve best possible speed try changing the number of connections. Preset seems to be three but I've achieved best results with 5. Anyway, Speed Download does excellent job of sorting all your downloads on top of achieving superior download speeds. FTP feature is excellent. I have actually stopped using Transmit in favor of Speed Download since its very stream lined. For .Mac users SD is great since you can achieve far superior speeds with it when transferring files to iDisk.

KUKKIS  Excellent utility application. I actually find everything way more efficiently with this one then with Spotlight alone. Perfect due to tacking feature and excellent for search all the stuff that eats your HD space.

KUKKIS  SpeedDownload 5 has bug that basically turns it into SuperSlowDownload. If you switch to minimized view and back to full view the bandwidth throttling limits the download speed maximum to 64 kb/s.

Awaken

*****

KUKKIS  Awaken is truly excellent application overall. It looks great and works as advertised. Its very easy to use (even if you are tired...) which I believe is essential in application such as Awaken. My only complaint is that Awaken currently can't start up your Mac. However, developer has told that such feature will be added in future. Also, I must say that Awaken has best support that I have ever seen in any application. With product and support like this and "free updates for life" update plan this is product that you shouldn't pass.

CoverSutra

*****

KUKKIS  THIS REVIEW IS FOR VERSION 2.0 (MacHeist bundle)

CoverSutra blows away any other iTunes control etc. software. It works the way it should (2.0 only 10.5 compatible) and has very nice and instant search feature right from Finder menu bar with album art. The over all visual and functional quality is very high. Extremely good playlist integration and yes, its from Finder menu bar!

TuneAid

*****

KUKKIS  Works perfectly with at least iPhone, iPod Classic and iPod Nano (these are the ones I've tried it with). TuneAid saved my music libery when my media drive crashed and it managed to import back my stuff from my iPod Classic. Great Stuff!

The interface is very nice and it works perfectly with iTunes importing not only the songs but the playlists as well.

KUKKIS  Regarding my hard drive "crash" and what I did.

First of all I fixed permissions with Apple's disk utility. Booted from TT DVD. After that I did all the maintenance and hardware check-up tasks before I went to optimize the drive. I would like to point out that I had no problems at all with hardware check or disk maintenance checks.

As said earlier once I was optimizing TT crashed. Restarted it and ran optimizing tasks which reported that there were problem with B-Tree (directory structure). Ran the maintenance utility again which started working then crashed while trying to solve something in directory (B Tree i guess). I left it running and it had crashed after / during the mentioned 24 hours of running the task (strange noise as if the drive wanted move the reading head past the platter or something). The drive was physically "toasted". I would also like to point out that drive was around 6 months old so must be one h*ll of coincidence for it brake like this.

KUKKIS  Bought this with MacUpdate bundle. I tried optimizing my HD with it and it crashed. Restarted from DVD again and got error message stating that repair utility needs to be run. I didn't but after more then 24 hours running it I started hearing sound as if the HD head hitting something over and over again. Then again a crash. Now tried installing new OS and erase the HD but unfortunately the HD was physically broke and couldn't install anything. Beware! Don't use this software! If you need good disk repair software get DiskWarrior!

ZIVKO  I highly doubt TechTool Pro caused your hard drive to have a hardware failure. I've had TTP cause data problems before, but never do physical damage to a drive.

ORION MK. V  Probably your drive was about to die anyhow. The optimization routine does lots of read/writes, so it probably crashed because the drive started going bad. That unlike TTPro's fault, just bad timing.

OPALDRAKE  Did you try to optimize while booted from the DVD? If so, that could explain the problem. When booted from the DVD, the program cannot utilize virtual memory and will most likely run out of RAM before the optimization can complete. Instead, install the program on the startup volume, then create the eDrive. Run the optimization from the eDrive. (Make sure the drive passes the volume structures routine first, and maybe a surface scan as well.)

OWLTECH  I have had TechTool Pro in some version ever since it came out. It has gotten me thru some really difficult problems, where other products did not even recognize the problem.

However, the later versions, beginning with v4, have proven unreliable to the point of even destructive. I remember trying to recover an HD that had a problem with double volume bitmap allocation, probably caused by prior application crashes. Running TTP rendered my flaky HD totally unbootable, and ultimately unrecoverable: I had to start over with reformat, a new OS, and scraps and scrapes from various backups. Since then, I have kicked the product to the ditch.
