JOSHP  I make a lot of AVI to H.264 MP4 conversions for my AppleTV. The newest version of VisualHub has started to output files that are much shorter than the original file. It just seems to give up and move on to the next queued file. And it never reports an error. Furthermore, ffmpegX, which is based on the same technology, works fine with similar settings.

JOSHP  @sabor,

"Sometimes Mac OS X hangs - due to whatever reason, it hangs. I've had it reach a state in which I would now be able to bring Activity Monitor and the command 'sudo reboot now' would not do anything."

And when your system is this unresponsive it will let you open up new programs (i.e. this one)? Doubtful. Odds are if your system is messed up enough to need this, then ironically it won't work. It's like trying to pull the emergency brake when the car has already sailed over the cliff.

PEN_SQ  Neither VisualHub or Transmission have any business touching the kernel. The only real sense behind that is if the network driver has a bug dealing with high CPU load. Try running Transmission alongside something like CpuTest. Besides an Apple bug, the "network driver" could also be modified by some third app. For example, VMWare and Parallels use their own net driver to talk between the host and guest. Anything "Little Snitch"-like is also a possible suspect (Though it's always been good to me.).

Good luck.

JOSHP  Yes, the developer was "kind enough to respond"... by being a cocky jerk. I don't have a problem with the advice he offered, only with how he expressed himself (much in the same manner you have a problem with my response). Criticizing my word choice is just childish and accomplishes nothing but highlighting your own problems. The point I made stands: the modifier key when clicking and the weird way this program sorts is counter-intuitive. The application does not behave how a standard user would expect it to, and is very un-Mac-like. There is no reason for any book catalog to sort by first name by default.

Safari AdBlock

*....

JOSHP  I really don't understand all the positive feedback. The application doesn't seem to work very well, as it seems to be missing Amazon ads and Google ads, the two most common I see everday. I couldn't even tell if it was working for the first couple hours I had it installed, because it does such a poor job at blocking anything. Furthermore, there is no contextual menu to block ads. There is no option to edit the filters. I don't even know what it is filtering. There is no way to subscribe to a list of filers like AdBlock for Firefox does. The built-in blocker in Camino is ten times better than this almost non-existent filter. Why is it so hard to create an ad-blocking approach to Safari that updates its filters via subscription like AdBlock for Firefox? Every ad-blocker on Safari for Tiger and Leopard is a pain to use, inadequate for the job, and shows no sign of improvement. I only hope that since this is only a 0.1 that it will improve somewhat, but I am not holding my breath.

I am the developer of Safari AdBlock. Thank you for your comment, comments allow me to make future versions better.

Safari AdBlock 0.1 is the very first version. I don't claim that all ads are blocked, but many, many ads are blocked. Of course, I'll fine-tune the blocking process as versions are released and as I get feedback.

As for additionnal features, they'll come. I just wanted to release a first version quickly.

Please understand that I need you to be more specific on what is not blocked by Safari AdBlock. Just saying 'it does such a poor job at blocking anything' doesn't help me to improve it. If you really want a good ad blocker for Safari, you need to give useful feedback.

For a start, could you please give me a specific URL on which an Amazon ad is not blocked so that I can see why it is not blocked?

Thanks,

Martin.

PS: please contact me by mail, you'll find my address on the homepage (http://safariadblock.sf.net).

JOSHP  Doesn't seem to block anything. Not sure if it has horrid filters or just isn't working on the sites I visit. Google ads aren't blocked. Amazon ads aren't blocked. Where does this get it's block list from and does it get subscribed filter updates like AdBlock for Firefox? There is no way to view what it has blocked or tweak it's behavior. Developer's page contains very little information on what this is supposed to be doing.

BRUJI  You could always sort the author by last name in Bookpedia. Just hold down the Option key and sort the author column.

There is also a Series field which you can use to input the series for a book (or use an additional custom field if you want to keep the series and position within the series separate) and then sort the custom column followed by the series column. That'll sort the series together and then where those are the same, it'll be sorted by position in the series. In this manner you can sort up to 6 columns deep.

Catching up is impossible - we're way ahead. :)

Plus, as long as you're getting picky about fields that you'd like, but no one else has ever mentioned, let's be picky about your grammar: holding down the option key is (1) not a combination at all, given that it's only one key; and (2) even if you were talking about two keys, that would be a combination of keys--not keyboards.

Your argument that Bookpedia is not way ahead simply because it doesn't do what you want, exactly the way you want it, is a joke. Bookpedia is way ahead because in total, it's a better app, and a much better value than Delicious Library. And yes, I have used D.L., and I've also tried Books.

I don't work for Bruji, and I have nothing against D.L. it's a nice app--but that's my opinion. And it disgusts me that after you offer feature requests, and the developer is kind enough to respond, and offer suggestions on how to do what you want, that you would come back with rude, adolescent remarks.

If you like D.L., because that one feature is important enough to you, then go use it.

JOSHP  i took a look at this program and i saw no mention of support for I2P, Tor, or RC$ encryption, so i deleted it immediately. now everytime i start my computer Little Snitch warns me that Ruby is trying to use port 80 to contact tvrss.net. What the hell? I didn't run any installer for this program and it didn't place anything in my login items. the program is gone, but its evil persists. how the hell do i stop this thing?

Librarian Pro

JOSHP  The default sort is alphabetical by title, which makes no sense. Sorting by author sorts by first name unless you inputed last name first.

Delicious Library import produced errors that scrolled off screen, so I could not see what the choices were (because there was no scroll bar). Hitting enter (which I assume was OK) gets rid of this message, but the import seems to stay in progress forever until canceled.

Undo cannot undo a delete action.

YUDONOMI  Looks like Boot Camp 1.3b's Keyboard Manager causes a freeze.

Boot your native Vista partition, run msconfig.exe, uncheck the Boot Camp keyboard manager startup item, reboot into Mac OS X, then try Parallels again.

JOSHP  Does keeping your system "fit and clean" include deleting caches, repairing permissions, and running cron scripts? Have you removed the program (including prefs and Application Support files) and reinstalled it? Make sure you have tried all the basics before you blame the developer.

JOSHP  a nice start, but it needs a lot of support for newer social sites. this program has lots of love for yahoo, but none for google. it has no photo support for picasa web albums, google bookmarks, and blogging via twitter or tumblr. and it really needs spellcheck as you type. the ability to add feeds to google reader by default would be nice too.

JOSHP  i would so love this if it was more configurable. it really needs the ability to configure a hotkey for hide/show and disable the little green button altogether. menubar prefs would be nicer than junking up the interface with the rapidostart tab in the lower-right, which doesn't even act like a tab. lots of promise. i look forward to the next update.

JOHNNYZ  I had this same problem. I found this has to do with Safari. I use Firefox. Despite it being my default browser, I've seen this behavior before where Safari on the Mac and Explorer on the PC are used as "engines" in the background to provide web access to applications and application plugins. So, I checked Safari and my prefs were set to not allow cookies. I changed it to allow cookies and it fixed my problem with web album uploader and the iPhoto plugins.

ARIC FRIESEN  MIA? I've been supporting Fetch Art for a while now. I will admit that I respond to support issues on my blog quicker than here, but it's difficult to offer support at multiple locations. Anyway, check out www.aric.org for support BTW there's been at least one new release version as well as several beta versions since the version you tried.
