JOEL MUELLER Conlan -- it's always been company policy not the directly list competing products with MacUpdate Desktop on MacUpdate. This is nothing new -- since the release of Desktop many many years ago. It's also not "slimy" that Apple doesn't list the Zune for sale in their stores (when they list many other 3rd party products). Companies often do not directly market or sell competing products. This is quite normal and accepted by most people. (Version 5.0.1)

JOEL MUELLER Sure, the version number isn't listed in the "Get Info" window of MacUpdate Desktop itself, and probably could be. But that has nothing to do with the apps functionality, features or anything else. And in fact, the version number stored in CFBundleShortVersionString is often not representative of the actual version number of the app, since Apple has no single standardization for devs when coding in their version numbers. When Desktop scans apps, it's looking at all of the places where version number strings can be coded into the app. We've gone far beyond basic comparison of CFBundleShortVersionString when making it easy to show that an app is outdated and needs updating on your Mac. JOEL MUELLER Thanks for your input. I have a few suggestions or semi-solutions for a couple things you were looking for. Instead of downloading and installing everything, you can simply double-click individual listings that you want to update. That's pretty similar to selecting an update, one at a time, and asking it to then download all of the selected updates. It just starts the process for each individual update right away instead of waiting for you to finish your group of selections. As if something doesn't update, you can skip it and move by right clicking (or use the action menu below) and tell the listing to,"Set version to current" or "Don't check for updates." By setting the version to current, it'll ignore the update until the next time a new release happens. By selecting not to check for updates, it will ignore updates indefinitely until you manually re-active it. (Version 5.0)

Thanks for the fast response! You're right - those are both ways of handling it. And I did use them yesterday. For example - I have both Adobe CS3 and CS4 installed. I had to set the CS3s to skip as they kept trying to update to CS4 trials vs the inline CS3s. The CS4s, though - updated fine. I may be asking for features that aren't practical. I was just trying to relay my experiences as a new customer while they are fresh in my mind. As I said before - a really good app that does what it says it will do - and on the support side - well, let's just say that after submitting lots of bugs Adobe's way, I've never, ever heard word one.

JOEL MUELLER I've posted it on a mirror here: http://download.macupdate.com/MacUpdate-Desktop-5.0.dmg Usually if the download loops back to the info page, it's because you are blocking from showing the referral website. In order to download apps hosted on MacUpdate servers, they need to come from macupdate.com domain names. So if you block the referrer URL, it can't see that and loops you back. This is to prevent extreme bandwidth costs from direct outside linking. (Version 5.0)

JOEL MUELLER I'd really like to see the webpage snapshot function be able to take a snapshot of the entire webpage -- just not the part of the webpage that is visible on the user's screen. LittleSnapper | May 19 2009 |
NEOX I understand it does for *some* web pages, but not all. Sometimes web elements get in the way and then it is not a clean capture. If you bought it as part of Machiest, try taking a snapshot of your web receipt and you will know exactly what I am talking about... Other then a few issues like this, it is a neat screenshot app, especially if you like to organize your snaps. I do agree that it is a bit overpriced though. More like $20 - $25, IMHO... But I guess that is the way it is with RMS. After all RapidWeaver used to be $39 and now is $79... I guess the bad economy has forced some companies to raise prices, while others are lowering them. iDriveforMac | Jan 14 2009 |
JOEL MUELLER There is a really great feature called "Auto-pause" that allows you to continue working at your normal paces online while the backup occurs. But once you start using active bandwidth to upload or communicate, it stops the IBackup upload, giving you full upload resources. This is really useful for people with slower DSL or Cable modem upload speeds. It keeps everything from seeming like it's grinding to a haul on my Mac, but maximizes the time things are open to continue my backup. I currently have a very slow upload speed (512Kbps), so I decided to test this feature. I checked "Auto-pause" and moved the slider down to 1%. I'm actually impressed because now my web browsing seems virtually untouched. You can choose any % you want that IDrive will continue using when Auto-pause is selected, giving all other apps partial priority over your upload bandwidth. Overall, I'm very impressed by iBackup so far. Interface is pretty good. It gives me a feeling of confidence and the app seems to be very comprehensive in features and automation. (Version 1.2.4)

DOT.iPhone | Aug 31 2007 |
JOEL MUELLER I'm massively impressed by this software. At first, I thought it would just stream your music over Wifi. That's cool, but it does so much more. You can actually stream both your music AND videos. And not just over your local Wifi network, but over the EDGE network (which is what you use to get the internet on your iPhone). Music streams great using the EDGE network. Video is a little choppy. Also, the developers made DOT.TUNES free. It used to cost $30, but since it's required to connect the streaming of your iTunes library, they made it free. Killer cool! Lastly, you can actually send other people the link to your music and THEY can listen to your iTunes library collections if you want. (Version 1.0)

Cyndicate | Aug 3 2007 |
JOEL MUELLER Another blog post, written by Erik Barzeski, explains his side of the story: http://nslog.com/2007/03/06/adam_betts Erik says that the only mention of a lawyer involved was when he offered Adam a 3rd option: to get a lawyer himself if he wants payment. But that doesn't really fit in with a resolution like the first 2 options, so I wouldn't consider it a third option. In fact, I'm not even sure why Erik would mention that to Adam. If the context was that Adam get a lawyer for _defense_, that wouldn't make sense either, because no one goes and gets an attorney until after they have received notice from the group making the charges. Adam states that he didn't complete the project, using two reasons in different posts: (1) "There is a reason why I cannot continue and I can't tell you why yet....[it has] nothing to do with me doing graphics for any competing products." (2) "this was not a breach of contract but more of 'personally offended.'" So it sounds like a mixture of dealing with relations that were already poor between Erik and Adam, and priority of something else Adam was doing. Overall, it sounds like Adam should have completed the project. And Erik should have handled it more smoothly. I can understand Erik's frustration with the situation, but he sounded pretty harsh in the replies to posted publicly, and even if no law suite was actually threatened, I can understand why Adam would back off even more after communicating with Erik. Erik has since pushed a strong arm decision for MacUpdate to either (1) remove this thread from our site, or (2) remove the Cyndicate product altogether. Obviously, this is starting to snowball and Erik is not making friends by taking such a stance. If I were Brad Miller, the developer of Cyndicate, I might pull the reigns in on this entire situation, before enemies are made all over the place. I say this because I desire good things for Cyndicate. (Version 1.0.1)

JOEL MUELLER (From user PRAMIN MacUpdate) Easy to use, intuitive interface (but it can be improved, because the stop and pause symbols are not right), customizable features, good integration with QuickTime Pro, audio editor and e-mail client. Recorded messages can quickly be stored and retrieved in user defined groups and can also be accessed from the Finder as QuickTime files. Perfect stability on my iMac G5 PPC. Can be triggered within any application from the menu bar (a hot key would be great), but the interface remains hidden. The recorded sound is crystal clear. It lacks quick ways to hide and show and to switch between internal microphone, audio in port and other sources (you have to go to the application Sound Preferences or to the System Preferences). A warning for you MacUpdate people: you posted this very same application twice! Once as "QuickVoice for OSX 2.1.1" and also as "QuickVoice X 2.1.1 -": http://macupdate.com/info.php/id/7779 . You should appriopriately merge the related information, reviews and ratings. (Version 2.1.2.133)

JOEL MUELLER I would think that the developer would be able to release a single release with all of the languages instead of constantly releasing new "versions" updates of software, and the only things different are one additional language added. It seems like cheating the system and cheatings users. It's not a real version update at all! (Version 3.9)

Wesabe Uploader | Mar 1 2007 |
JOEL MUELLER This makes it super simple to get your banking data from your bank and automatically send it to the Wesabe system. The main issue I have is that Wesabe features are pretty simple. It doesn't yet support basic financial reports like Income Statements (monthly, yearly). It does however make it easy to modify common expenses like "ATM WITHDRA KZOO, MI 04/07" and make it plain "Personal ATM Expense." But for getting the data from your bank to Wesabe, this couldn't be any easier. I just entered my bank user name and password and clicked and button. It did all the rest. (Version 1.0.13)

Liquifile | Jan 14 2007 |
JOEL MUELLER Liquifile's file filter in the window is much faster than Apple's Spotlight. When searching in Spotlight, it breaks things down into confusion categories of file types and it keeps moving and moving until the file search is completed. Liquifile's filter keeps things displayed as if they were all in one tree structure, making finding the specific file you want WAY faster. And the visual display of file size and date by round dots is a great idea. Once you get used to this format, you can scan and find documents visually much faster than searching for dates represented by lettered timestamps. The only thing I really want is Finder integration. I want to replace the normal Finder with Liquifile's interface, because I often find myself ending up back inside the Finder -- a place I'd rather not be after getting used to being in Liquifile. You can specify which folders it should monitor and how much disk space it should use for the backups. I've only needed to recover an earlier version once, but I was able to look back thru quite a few versions to find the one I wanted (an earlier version of a program I was working on that had some code I'd later deleted...). So, for me, it does what I wanted. (Version 1.0.1)

JOEL MUELLER MacUpdate isn't branding all posters as liars. We are simply stating the facts, that some of the 5-star ratings were posted by users at the request of the developer, in order that those users get a free educational license. So we're making this simple fact public so that the people that read the reviews can be aware that some of the reviews could be posted with this motive in mind. (Version 4.5)

JOEL MUELLER The developer requires users getting an educational license to post a 5-star rating user review. This is confirmed information, and you should be aware of this practice when seeing so many 5-star ratings on MacUpdate for Captain FTP. thanks for the review. You are right, it's not too easy to handle with the keys, but the more you play the better it'll work. The intention was indeed to make the game not too easy, because this is what we found is real fun: to improve. To lose at the beginning against a "bad" player and then, after some training be able to beat a real "strong" player. And it's real great to win a championship or tournament ;) Try to put side on the ball and give it a more zig zag path by moving fast shortly before hitting the ball or even try to hit it with the edge... So check out the different player strengths. This will help. Also try to break while moving. This will give you some more control. You can also try another camera. I tested a lot and many test-players did too. And the way people play is often completely different. I would very much appreciate any reviews, comments of other people! One thing's for sure: There's nothing that can't be improved! (Version 1.0)

Print Therapy | Dec 4 2005 |
JOEL MUELLER Printer Setup Repair, the widely-used utility for Mac OS X printers, has taken a malicious approach to combatting software piracy. With version 5.0.3 for Mac OS X Tiger, if the user enters a pirated serial number known to the program, the program will immediately and without any warning remove all user preferences and the user keychain, and possibily do other unknown damage to the user's system. This heavy-handed response to piracy has been repeatedly condemned and the legality of such a practice is doubtful. Just this past November, the Assistant Secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security warned Sony-BMG about its DRM technology, saying "it's your intellectual property, not your Printer Setup Repair goes beyond what Sony-BMG did, intentionally damaging the computer rather than merely opening it up to exploitation by other trojans. Legally sanctioning such practice would be equivalent to giving a merchant the right to burn down the home of a shoplifter. A Palm OS developer who tried the same thing in 2000 was sued. This highly malicious response is ironic and embarrassing for a software company called "Fixamac," whose utility is trusted to repair damage to a Mac OS X system. The intent to damage user systems must be treated as equivalent to a trojan or a virus, and must be condemned and publicized, no matter what one's opinions may be about software piracy. Paying customers could also be inadvertently affected if they were to mistype a serial number. Fixamac, the developer of Printer Center Repair, is based in Hollywood, California. JOEL MUELLER It would seem to me, based on people that I know well, that "disabled people" wouldn't want you to pity or look down on them just because of their "situation." The question why they should have to pay extra for certain things is the same as asking why anyone should be anything extra. It's because it's costs whoever's making it time and money. I see no difference and look down on no disabled person in this respect. But now we're not talking about the software SwitchXS, which is what this forum is for. (Version 2.1)

JOEL MUELLER I don't see how it could be called a rip off. Drop boxes have been around since the beginning of a GUI internet. Apple has had drag and drop printer icons from the desktop. Apple's old eWorld community used drag and drop transfers. It's fair to say there is a better solution, but it's unfair to claim it as a rip off. (Version 1.0)

JOEL MUELLER Really fun game. I got to the 6th level my first time playing and the super hero guy beat me. I like that the court types change as you get higher in the levels. The music is great and sound effects are fun. Adding more sound effects instead of making the characters repeat the exact same thing over and over would be nice. I have dual monitors that I use and when I click off of the screen it pauses the game. This is good, but it'd be nice to have an option to disable the second screen so I don't keep messing up when my cursor pauses the game. (Version 1.0i)

MACGIZMO The icons were made to work with Pixadex and Candybar or with the finder (Package Contents) for each individual application – since they are file format icons, nobody in their right mind would try to apply them to every file on their computer via cut & paste in the finder. That's probably why he didn't bother releasing them in the Aqua format, because you would still have to convert them to icns format to use them, and most people wouldn't know how. (Version 1.0)

ANONYMOUS Ditto. I don't see why he couldn't at least have applied the icon to the icon file containing the icon... that way both approaches would work... And, yes, what's the point of making the distro a .dmg.sitx instead of a compressed .dmg? It just adds an additional step, and doesn't help anyone on OS 9 because it *is* in a .dmg! (Version 1.0.1)

DOCUNiUM | Mar 27 2005 |
ANONYMOUS Try downloading an epson driver sometime... You open a .sitx archive to get to a .dmg image containing another self extracting archive that gives you an installer that does nothing but drop ANOTHER INSTALLER on your desktop which you have to run to finally install the driver. I might actually be missing a step or four but its rediculous for a commercial driver to be released in the way they have it done.
