ZWIGGYBO It probably requires admin access because of the following feature: "calibre has a builtin web server that gives allows you to access your ebook collection using a simple browser from any computer anywhere in the world. It can also email your books and downloaded news to you automatically." In order to turn server on or off, requires admin rights I believe. (Version 0.5.10)

JOBBY OK, so we have a choice between paying or viewing ads. Fine. But why, if I choose to view ads, does it ALSO nag me on startup that I haven't paid? There's a "buy now" button and a "remind me later" button, but there isn't a "shut the hell up, I *want* to use the ad-supported version" button. At the moment Atebits are getting ad revenue from me. If Tweetie nags me again, they'll lose that and not recoup it in the form of a registration fee, because I'll be going back to Twitterific. Respect your users, don't nag them. (Version 1.0.2)

Opera | Apr 12 2009 |
JOBBY So, I applied a simple version update, and Opera reset all my preferences. That meant that, on starting up, it reloaded all my saved pages and allowed them to set cookies, run Javascript, Java, Flash etc, EVEN THOUGH I HAD EXPLICITLY TURNED ALL OF THESE OFF. This is supposed to be a SECURE browser? I would have been better off staying with the old version! Opera devs, here is a list of circumstances when you may set default preferences: 1) When there is no pref file in existence because the user has never run ANY version of Opera. 2) When the user explicitly tells you to. THAT IS ALL. If you're going to reset prefs at any other time, at least TELL THE USER YOU'VE DONE SO, and then ALLOW THEM TO SET THEM BACK *BEFORE* LOADING ANY CONTENT! I am SERIOUSLY pissed off with Opera right now. Even Microsoft don't pull this crap. (Version 9.64)

This is a great new feature in Leopard, however, it's kinda confusing to users since from time to time the application seems to use extreme high amounts of memory. Unfortunately the preamble is so long that Growl cuts off the commit message (at least with the iPhonesque Mini display style and "limit to 2-5 lines" on). I've hacked the text in my copy to be less verbose, but could we have an option to reduce it to something like "r1033 / bob:" to save space? The text in the widget is a bit on the tiny side, too... it's fine on the main iMac monitor, but the secondary monitor is a CRT, and it's unreadable there. JOBBY Great, but is it REALLY necessary for the text input boxes to use Windows key shortcuts rather than Mac ones? Cmd-A is a lot easier than Home followed by Shift-End, not just because it's less keystrokes, but because it's the standard that EVERY OTHER Mac app (except Microsoft's, of course) uses. I've lost count of the number of times I've looked at the "Fly To" box and found the previous search still in there with my new search at the end, because I pressed Cmd-A out of habit and nothing happened. Could you please email the developer about the problem your having. Is it just with a particular pdf or all pdf documents your opening? If it's the latter, emailing the pdf that your having problems with would greatly be appreciated to help track down the problem. Lastly, the website is currently under construction and I do apologise for the lack of support. (Version 1.0.1)

JOBBY No matter what I do, it just says "coaster created". I've tried turning the burn speed down to minimum, using CD-Rs and DVD-RWs, but nothing works. (Core 2 Duo iMac, Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J, firmware FCQ5) I can burn to (and read afterwards :) the same types of discs using a Burn Folder just fine (a shame Apple never thought to put disc spanning support in) so it's not the discs or the drive at fault. What's going wrong here? I'm running out of blanks... (Version 1.0.2)

JOBBY You could drag it to your Finder sidebar or toolbar, then you'd always have it handy (unless you were working from the Desktop, of course). Agree it would be nice to have a floating window if you just run it on its own, though. I'd also like it to not break the icon — after I pass a PNG through PNGCrusher, it just has the generic PNG icon rather than the preview of the file contents, and I have to use Pinki to restore the preview... JOBBY Attempting to select a user or group in the Grant Wizard crashes it every time. To add insult to injury, all changes made to prefs in that session are lost — they should be written to disk as soon as the user hits OK, not held in memory until the program exits cleanly. Especially when it's this unstable! (Version 1.4.2)

JOBBY Looks nice, but won't connect to my ISP for some reason. It keeps saying "479 We don't accept private IP", which suggests MegaFon is using my internal network address (192.168.x.y) rather than my external address. Not much use if you can't use it behind NAT! Incidentally, where is it getting the email address for the registration screen? It's not the one in the "me card" in Address book, which is what it should be grabbing. I'm not sure I like the idea of programs scouring my system to try and find my email address, in any case. Providing a blank field and letting me type it in looks a lot less dodgy :) (Version 0.8415)

JOBBY Has anyone managed to get syncing to work over FTP? It sits there for ages and says "connection timed out" - despite the fact that I can put the same details into Transmit and get straight in! Shame the Activity and Errors windows don't seem to report anything about what FTP's doing, as I might have a chance of sorting it. It doesn't even log to Console, much less have a Transmit-style transcript window :( (Version 2.1.1b1)

JOBBY Earlier versions used to work on my old G4, but installing this latest version on my Intel iMac produced a window that just says "can't fork: No such file or directory" when I click Refresh. Unfortunately all the help links point to web pages that no longer exist - which shows the value of including the help files with the program! After some fiddling, I found you needed to copy vstream-client from /Library/Application Support/TivoTool to /usr/local/bin - everything started working then. Intel users - it's also worth downloading ffmpegX and copying the ffmpeg file from inside that app's package to /Library/Application Support/TivoTool - it'll convert a *lot* faster without Rosetta in the way :) (Version 0.5.7)

JOBBY Slight problem with the subfolders feature - I have an 'all unread' Smart Folder which has one of its rules as 'Folder is not Work Email'. However, 'Work Email' is the root of my work IMAP account. The Smart Folder correctly excludes everything in the account, including subfolders. but DockStar only excludes items in the root of the account, not the subfolders. As a result, the unread count is much larger than what actually appears in the Smart Folder. (Given the number of folders in the work account, adding them manually to the rule is a bit of a non-starter, too :) (Version 1.1)

JOBBY .mac syncing is useful, but expensive. I tried to set up .mac-free syncing with the incredibly useful MySync, but KIP doesn't appear in the list of applications it can sync with. Not sure what's causing this (I'm assuming KIP uses Sync Services to do its syncing) but if this worked, that would be the killer feature for me. Well, that and being able to encrypt individual items (or entire tags), and only show the previews/open the items when the password is provided :) (Version 1.0.1)

JOBBY Great - this has replaced GrowliTunes for me. The Show Growl Notication action doesn't work when assigned to hotkey 9 for some reason. It would also be nice to be able to choose the hotkey activation sequence - some of my apps use Command-Option shortcuts extensively, and I'd like to be able to change it to Ctrl-Command. Even better would be setting it on a per-hotkey basis. Would it be possible to have Rate Previous Track commands? If a track finished before I can rate it, I have to go to iTunes and rate it in there, which is a pain. Shouldn't be too hard to keep a note of what's just finished playing, hopefully :) (Version 2.2.1)

JOBBY Good start, but doesn't seem to handle compilations as a single unit. I also dragged a cover to an album that already has one, and it now has two pieces of art with no apparent way of deleting the old one! The Help menu produces a dialog saying "Help isn't available for Art Collector" - this program needs a help file, especially if it isn't obvious how to do something as simple as removing art from a file! ManOpen | Oct 13 2006 |
CHRISCHRAM Adding to Spyro's comment: (You must have Xcode Tools installed for this procedure to work.) Download the source code from the dev's website. Double-click the archive to unzip and untar it. In Terminal type 'cd' (without the quites) and a space, then drag the 'ManOpen-2.5.1' folder to the terminal window, then . Type 'make' . In a few seconds you will find ManOpen.app and openman in the folder. Drag ManOpen.app to somewhere you keep your Applications. Drag openman to somewhere in your PATH. You're done. MONKEY TOOLS Thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately the LAME mp3 codec cannot be included in the Sound Grinder installer due to legal restrictions for commercial software. We would desire greatly to have this included, but it is not possible at this time. Also, we welcome greatly any information you can provide about the issue with CBR and VBR formats as we cannot duplicate the issue, but would like more information. Homebrew Formulator | Jan 21 2006 |
JOBBY I may be missing something, but if I open a window from Manage Databases and then go to table view, I get left with an uncloseable window - I can't get back to record view, which has a Close button, and the standard red Close button is greyed out. Command-W doesn't work, either. This could just be me not being used to Filemaker, of course, but it would be great if it could be made to work in the same way as other Mac apps. Is there a way to change the units to metric for us Europeans, BTW? (Version 2.5.8)

Homebrew Formulator | Jan 21 2006 |
JCTULL If you look under Manage Databases, there is a 'View as Form' item. Select that to get back to the form view where you can click the 'Close Table' button. This is a constraint of creating a Filemaker application where you need to control access to background databases. As far as the metric units, this is not configurable. Unfortunately, to convert the program to SI would require a ton of extra work that cannot be done currently. FWIW, I do have tooltips that pop-up for most non-metric inputs to show the metric equivalent. This is not at all ideal, but it is something. Sorry about the limitation. (Version 2.5.8)

Not good. It also trys to 'phone home' on each start up. If this is just a check for new versions, please add an option to disable this. I prefer to manage my updates through macupdate.com rather than have apps all shouting 'look at my shiny new version' every time I start them :) Of course, if it's NOT just a check for new versions, please tell us what you're sending back and why... JOBBY It would be useful if Subscriber supported Growl as a notification method. Supporting standard keystrokes like Cmd-Left in the text entry field would be nice, too :) More worryingly, what is amber.x-dns.com? Subscriber tries to connect to this at startup - probably just a version check (but there's no option to disable this, and there should be). If you deny connections to this address, email notifications don't work. In fact, Subscriber doesn't even try to connect to my mail server. Is it trying to send email via x-dns.com, and if so: why, and what guarantee do we have that our email addresses aren't being harvested? It doesn't inspire confidence :( (Version 1.1b1)
