JESHYR  The whole user interface is weird, not just the first page and program icon. It's not "OS Xish" at all, and behaves in ways that are very unintuitive to me as a Mac user. For example, the "Preferences" is hidden in the File menu instead of the Program menu where it usually goes. Most commands have no menu options or keyboard shortcuts at all, which makes usage difficult for users who prefer or need to use the keyboard for things.

There's also no obvious way to get your carefully entered data out of the program which bothers me a lot, as a potential customer. The documentation says printing and saving to a thumb drive are planned features, but there's no indication whether exporting data in an open format (XML, for example) will be added, or WHEN any of this may be added.

The program is also set up only for American users using non-metric measurements, which doesn't seem to be in the documentation anywhere.

MedsLog

JESHYR  I agree that most people wouldn't want or need a program like this to track meds, but there are still hundreds of thousands (millions?) of us who take more than four sets of meds each day and find keeping track of it all more than a little bit daunting! Especially if you have other symptoms such as a little memory loss which makes it a challenge to remember which meds have been taken.

I need to take 10 different prescribed meds a day just to survive, more when I have an infection or some other acute problem. These 10 drugs need to be taken, variously, between 1 and 4 times per day. Some before food, some with food, some after food, some x hours away from food, some x hours away from certain other meds, some at bedtime. I track them with a spreadsheet at the moment, and alarms added to iCal by hand - I think this program will be a great improvement on that if it can deal with the issues I raised in my other comment.

So yes, there's a market. The size of it I can't comment on but there's definitely a need. :)

JESHYR  I understand this program sets off an alarm when meds are due, but is there actually a way to indicate to the program whether the meds have been taken, and if they've been taken at a different time to what was planned?

I have to take meds between 4 and 10 times a day, depending on my exact med combination at the time, and despite the best intentions they sometimes get messed up. I'd love to be able to tell the program that my 2pm med was taken at 3pm, for example.

Also, if multiple drugs are due at the same time will the program use a single alarm or multiple alarms for this? The demo only allows one medication to be input so I can't tell.

Also, I can't see there's any way to logs meds which are taken PRN (as needed). Is this a planned addition?

IPHONEANDMACDEVELOPER  Yes, there is a way to indicate to the program whether the meds have been taken, and if they've been taken at a different time to what was planned. It's on the "Consumed Log" window. For every med consumed, add a log entry which contains the consumed time (which can be edited).

If multiple drugs are due at the same time the program uses multiple alarms.

The next release will allow two medications in demo mode.

Logging meds that are consumed as needed can be done, but it's not fully implemented yet.

Please contact me via email for more suggestions and comments. I don't always look here for input. Thanks.

JESHYR  It does what it does fantastically, but I wish I could let it know to open certain URLs in certain browsers. I have a bunch of Fluid browsers - one for Twitter and one for Facebook for example - and I'd love all my twitter.com URLs to automatically go to the Twitter fluid instance, and so on.

The functions it has now are great, but the one I described would be compelling and I'd certainly buy it then!

Keystrokes

RICKY BUCHANAN  I have a disability that means I can use a trackpad with one fingers but can seldom type at all. Without KeyStrokes I'd have the choice of Windows, or of not computing at all. And if I chose Windows, similar software with multiple word prediction, and the other *vital* features of KeyStrokes would cost me FAR more.

Like me, most other people needing this software will have an agency which can help with funding.

Thank God that there are people like David in the world.

RICKY BUCHANAN  This type of software is not something that any random programmer could knock up in a few days or even weeks ... I happen to be a beta tester for KeyStrokes and also a programmer and I am extraordinarily impressed with the quality of the software and of the support that the developer provides for users.

KeyStrokes is an advanced program with a very specific audience. To make a living on software like this is not possible unless you change what David is charging. I can assure you that he is NOT getting rich on the back of people with a disability, and he never would.
