JEEPEE  I've been using this program for several years now, without any problems. It's a secure program and very easy to use. The developer is also very responsive and has quite some experience with security.

I don't understand the post below. These updates had nothing to do with security. Don't write a review after testing an app for a few minutes, just place a comment.

JEEPEE  Before you buy this, be aware that this program has not been updated for 2 years! It's easy to say: "Upgrades for life" then...

Don't buy this, there are other programs that are free or more worth buying!

VirusBarrier X5
Jun 26 2008

JEEPEE  Nobody knows how many Windows-viruses VirusBarrier X recognizes, so that might help making it faster.

Intego tells us this:

"Does VirusBarrier X scan for Windows viruses? Yes and no.

VirusBarrier X certainly does not scan for ALL of 60,000 or so Windows viruses and variants. But it does scan for the latest ones and all of the Office Macro viruses. The Macro viruses can often affect the Mac version of Microsoft Office as well as the Windows versions, so we naturally scan for and remove these.

Also, we have been adding all of the email spread viruses that have become prevalent lately, so that Mac users do not unknowingly send these viruses out to Windows users by accident.

But VirusBarrier X is not a comprehensive tool for eradicating Windows viruses."

It's good to know it doesn't scan for all Windows-viruses, so you do not completely rely on it.

CleanApp
May 31 2008

JEEPEE  CleanApp finds (when it's installed and the daemon is running before an app is installed for the very first time) hidden files and files that have complete different names than the app has. Appcleaner looks great, but can be compared to AppZapper, etc., they all work like Spotlight does, only a little bit easier.

Tiger Cache Cleaner

*****

JEEPEE  I've upgraded to Leopard Cache Cleaner, but while all reviews of Tiger Cache Cleaner and the versions before seem to have gone to Leopard Cache Cleaner, I thought it would be fair to write this mini review.

Tiger Cache Cleaner always worked great for me (as did Panther Cache Cleaner and Jaguar Cache Cleaner). It was able to solve strange things in the past, when I had almost given up hope to get it solved. Thanks.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  Fair enough. I've also used this software for years, since it was first released as freeware (circa OS X 10.1, if I recall)

I've paid for the upgrades over the years because it was the first utility of its kind and it has never let me down.

And, you're right about the current Leopard Cache Cleaner being the same page as the old Tiger Cache Cleaner (updated, of course). We thought that Tiger Cache Cleaner had reached EOL (end of life) and as a matter of standard practice that holds for all listings here, the old Tiger Cache Cleaner page was updated to be the new Leopard Cache Cleaner page here at MU.

NetBarrier X5
Nov 12 2007

JEEPEE  While I dislike the price and especially the fact they want subscription-money every year for some service-updates (trojan-information I think), I still love NetBarrier.

I now use it for several years and now with Leopard, I still get updates for NetBarrier X4 and it works perfectly. I thought Leopard would break NetBarrier X4 and they would ask me to pay for NetBarrier X5, but X4 does work in Leopard. Thank you for that Intego!

I still didn't renew the service-update subscription, but I believe NetBarrier X4 can do without it. I also use a hardware firewall in my router, so I'm quite safe, I think. :-)

I know there are other firewalls as well, but as long as NetBarrier X4 works, I stay.

AppCleaner
Jul 4 2007

JEEPEE  There are a lot applications like this that do delete files that belong to a program, but do not find all the related files.

Most applications like AppCleaner (AppZapper, etc.) are searching for names that are related to the program, but always after the programs are installed. They have no idea what invisible files or files with complete other names might belong to those programs.

Only applications that monitor your Mac constantly might find all related files. The only program doing this is CleanApp.

Uninstaller and Yank can find files belonging to programs too, but they use other methods and well, I find CleanApp much easier to use and it still does find more files.

Remember that CleanApp must be installed and the registrationservice must be activated before any installation of a program you want to remove. CleanApp is not able to find related files that are already installed, before CleanApp is installed and activated.

I hope that more applications like AppCleaner (which looks very nice), AppZapper etc. will follow CleanApp in finding more files and better cleaning, because that's what they promise and do less 'Spotlight'-searching... :-)

CleanApp
Feb 3 2007

JEEPEE  Very responsive developer, great support!

Still the best application for removing every program (and all related files) that's installed after the installation (and started registering option) of CleanApp.

Only Uninstaller and Yank can say that too, but CleanApp is much easier to use and does a lot more.

AppZapper
Dec 6 2006

JEEPEE  I hope AppZapper will log changes in the future, so that it really finds all files, like CleanApp, UnInstaller and Yank do. Now AppZapper only find files by searching for the right name.

I love AppZapper, but I really mis that and it keeps me from using it (I have a license). I use CleanApp instead and will buy it, if AppZapper stays this way. :-(

JEEPEE  Wow, this release is great! It finds files that AppZapper misses (I hope it will be able to find them also in the future), because it doesn't include the name of the program...

It was able to reset a program, as if I had not used it before and I could start the demo all over again. :-) Thanks.

JEEPEE  Very nice little application, compresses much much better than just zipping.

Very easy to use, although all the workflows give me an Applescript error on my iMac G4 and my iBook G3.

I hope pressing the 'P' for using a password will be unnecessary in the near future.

It can replace archiving through zip in the future for me. Thanks!

TASKMAN  Strange, as no AppleScripting is involved in them.

Eventually, in a future version, the P button thing won't be necessary, but right now it is the only way I have to make p7zip understand that I want to work on a protected archive.

JEEPEE  It says:

---

AppleScript Error

file "Macintosh HD:Applications:7zX.app" kan niet in type alias worden omgezet. (-1700)

---

I put 7zX in the utility-folder and I think that's the problem. I now placed 7zX in the Program-folder and all Workflows work perfectly.

Can you make it possible that 7zX can stay inside the Utility-folder? I find it more a Utility... :-)

GANNET  This is an unfortunate problem that happens with any such workflow (which do run on applescript). When the workflow is created it stores a path to where the application currently is and that's where it will look every time you run it. Making it work anywhere is much more difficult and would be better off making a proper CM plugin instead. In the meantime you can either keep it in your apps folder or change the workflow (very easy - just open it in automator and point it to the right place).

JEEPEE  This is a great program with a lot of features that make it very safe.

For example: You can make your passwords automatically hide after a specific time, lock when your Mac goes to sleep or after a specific time and your clipboard is cleared when the program is locked.

It's also nice to be able to find things through Spotlight.

Support is also very good, it's clear that the developer knows what he's doing and he really does something with the comment and requests he get.

JEEPEE  I know I've posted before, but I want to warn anyone who considers to buy this program. Don't!

It's got unsolved bugs (with the danger of losing info) for more then a year now, they stopped their forum and they never respond to emails. By the way, the price is $ 9,95 not $ 5,-, keep it, this program is worth nothing! Sorry!

JEEPEE  Thanks SubRosaSoft for making upgrading to version 4 free of charge. And wow, the price has doubled... I guess the new features did it.

The program works great by the way and the possibility of encrypting an external drive is great, although I did not test that yet.

I would like to be able to shred with the Gutmann method, but hey Permanent Eraser takes care of that.

You can also update your backup perfectly. Too bad it's impossible to have an unencrypted partition, so I can boot from it. :-/ But it's perfect if you need it.

JEEPEE  While DiskWarrior 3.0.3 could not continue to rebuild the new iMac G5 (with iSight) (I had to Force Quit it), TechTool Pro 4.1.1 could.

I'm sure DiskWarrior will be updated (how long will that be?), but TechTool is already there. Thanks!

ROD DUNCAN  Just upgraded to TechTool Pro 4.1.1. Have a number of Mac's including an updated Cube (only computer I can't part with) An AI 1.67 Powerbook and a newly purchased iMac G5 2.1 GHZ (iSight model). Running 10.4.5 across the board. All updates etc.

Works as advertised on all. It is faster.

Someone mentioned they had problems with DiskWarrior 3.03 on their iMac. Dunno what their issue is but DiskWarrior also works perfectly on all these computers. I back up to a number of external FW drives and run utilities off the external's.

My 2¢.
