JAMUS The Silverlight installation gets a star drop right from the start, which is too bad overall considering the Flip4Mac software is useful sometimes for when clients send over a dreadful WMV file, but the inclusion of Silverlight is not welcome. It is nice that Telestream does tell us about the Silverlight inclusion during the install (although most users will never actually read it), it is disappointing to see it added in to the install. If we wanted Silverlight we would install it ourselves. I wonder if Telestream is being forced/pressured by Microsoft to include Silverlight in their default install? (Version 2.3.0.14)

ILGAZ I wonder what will happen when Silverlight, part of MS culture gets some "remote execution" security issue. Will the team at MS who still have face to ship that performance/security disaster named MS Windows Media Player to Intel macs give up all work in hand and ship a security update for OS X which shows their every attempt as joke? This is a company who managed to ship MS Office latest version installed as user 502, traditionally no power, secondary account on OS X and people pay huge amount of money to them for it. Silverlight on the other hand, is "free". Not a political thing, rather a technical thing since I know how MS works (like most do), I would opt out of Silverlight even if my Mac was supported. I don't allow it even to my Windows machines/managed clients since it is a really needless failed attempt to kill Adobe flash and nothing else. Even MS joint ventures doesn't use it. JAMUS Zimbra really needs to be spun back off into their own company. It is too nice an app/server for what it is getting. The increased Yahoo logo plastering is really holding them back. As long as Microsoft has partnered up with them, I just really don't see them allowing Zimbra to grow and flourish since it would put too much pressure on Exchange. (Version 1.0.3)

Microsoft Office 2008 | Jul 20 2009 |
JAMUS I have to give the MacBU group some respect. They take an app suite like this and make it work within the limits imposed on them by the company they keep. Could this same type app be much better than it is? YES. Would Microsoft actually want it to be better? My guess is NO. It is huge, bloated, and way too expensive, but Office 2008 does allow Mac users to camouflage themselves fairly well in a business environment and fit in with most aspects of Office. Exchange/Entourage is another story... They get 1 full point if for no other reason than keeping all user data in one nice neat "Microsoft User Data" folder (something that their PC-cousins still can't seem to do right). TRAMPAS I agree. As far as I can see the only reason why MS Office for Mac can be so poor is that Microsoft want it be. 2008 has been so much worse than 2004, with Word crashing on a very regular basis. We don't hear very much about it because MS still want to sell their us their awful software and Apple is hardly going to advertise the fact that the only way you can run MS office well on the Mac is to install Windows - horrible but true. JAMUS I have said it before and will say it again, companies need to get over this idea of forcing a login for a user to get simple download such as a bug fix or a patch. JAMUS I would love to see the market test data that promoted Microsoft to plaster their Silverlight download page with: "Don’t Worry! So far, I have found it to be glorified junk that Flash could have handled instead (based on sites I have seen so far). If not for Netflix streams I would never have it touch my computer. JAMUS Ok, after the 8.01 "update", here is how it breaks down for me: 1. Deducting points for no autoupdater or incremental updates. 2. Deducting MAJOR points for requiring me to create a login with Quark just to download an update to fix bugs/problems in your own software. Attention all companies: please stop doing this! A demo sure, a free XTension sure, but an update? No way. Enjoy that fake login profile now sitting in your database. 3. Adding points for no apparent problems with the install of the update. 4. Deducting points from still relying on a license server for unified volume licenses AND a serial number AND a validation code (thanks for tying up server hardware for that by the way). 5. Adding several points for trying to update the UI some. 6. Deducting points for STILL having quirky PDF exports. 7. Deducting points for almost 1.5GB install. B-L-O-A-T. Two stars is the best you are getting out of me for this one Quark. You are trying to do better, and I appreciate it, but you just keep missing the target. DANA SUTTON I've said this before about an earlier similar complaint, but it's worth repeating. The typical use of this client is to be able to establish a VPN connection with some remote site operated by the corporation where you work, the university you attend, etc. Typically this bit of software is distributed by that organization's computing organization in a pre-configured form. It is highly atypical for an individual to want to download it directly from Cisco. Frankly, I can't imagine why anybody would want it. (Version 4.9.01.0080)

DANA SUTTON Chrysogonus: If that's your situation you need to jump down the throat of your university's computer support people and have them put out an up-to-date version, as they should. If your university is like mine, the version they hand out is pre-configured to work with their system, and I doubt that if you downloaded your own version you could get it to work properly, at least without a lot of hassle. And these guys of yours are supposedly being paid to deal with the hassle, so you don't have to. (Version 4.9.01.0080)
