JWDRISKELL  Strangely enough, the link you've provided is the same link we've used in the "Download Now" link at the top of our page. The difference lies in entering the URL directly in a browser's address bar, and accessing it through our PHP pages.

Thanks for providing the link so that it'll be easily available to others.

JWDRISKELL  Yes, the download does state that it's v.1.0.8. We're sending an e-mail to the developer to clear this up. According to him, the app was supposed to be v. 1.1 build 414. Thanks for pointing this out to us.

The Cheat
Jul 13 2009

JWDRISKELL  I don't know if this will help, or if it will even work, but here's a quote from the developer's Web site:

Reports suggest that you must issue the command sudo sysctl -w kern.tfp.policy=1 from the terminal if you're using The Cheat on an Intel Mac.

Hope this helps.

AstoundStereo Expander
Jun 5 2009

JWDRISKELL  I'm not sure about where AstoundStereo Expander installs all its components, but here are some ideas to make your digital life a little easier.

First, check in System Preferences: System: Accounts and click on the Login Items tab. Make sure there are no entries in the list for AstoundStereo Expander or for GenAudio. If there is one, there are a couple of things you should do. First, right-click (or Ctrl-click) on it and select "Reveal in Finder". Delete the file. (You may wind up with a dialog asking you to authenticate the deletion. Click the Authenticate button and enter your login password.) Next, highlight the listing in System Preferences: System: Accounts: Login Items, and click the minus button at the bottom of the list to delete it.

If you didn't find anything in the Login Items, open a Finder window and navigate to Macintosh HD/Library/StartupItems/ and see if there is anything in that directory which belongs to AstoundStereo Expander or GenAudio. If there is, delete it. You may have to authenticate the deletion again. (While you're at it, you may want to comb through the system preferences [Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/] or your user preferences [~/Library/Preferences/] for a folder named either AstoundStereo Expander or GenAudio, or a file whose name begins with "com.genaudio....").

If there's nothing in the Macintosh HD/Library/StartupItems/ directory, you can look in the Macintosh HD/System/Library/StartupItems/ directory, but Apple doesn't usually allow developers to install there, so you probably won't find anything.

If none of the above takes care of your purchase pop-up, there's another, more direct and complicated way to find out what AstoundStereo Expander has installed on your system, but it's,... well,... more complicated.

JWDRISKELL  You can add it yourself, and it's easy. Open a Finder window and go to the root level of your drive (e.g., Macintosh HD [or the name of your boot volume] in the Devices section of the window's sidebar). Navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Eject.menu. Double-click on Eject.menu. This will place the icon in your menu bar. If that isn't what you're after, you can get rid of it by Cmd-dragging it out.

Repeating Motif Generator
Jun 17 2008

JWDRISKELL  RMG is a great application, and belongs in the toolbox of any designer, but there's one problem with the program....

If RMG draws a motif without an outline, clicking on "Draw line" in the Color tab of the Editor displays a line for the motif in the Repeating Motif and Fragment Image tabs, but *does not* set a line weight. If you export your repeating motif to a bitmap format, the line appears in the color selected; but if you export to a vector format, there is no outline. If you click on the Line tab in RMG's Editor, you'll see that the line weight is still zero (0). Clicking on the "Draw line" checkbox in the Color tab of the Editor should set a *minimum* line weight of one (1).

This problem holds true for motifs generated by the developer's screensaver, Random Motif Saver. Although the outline appears on-screen, and though the outline can be seen if saved and opened in RMG, the line weight is zero (0), and won't export properly to a vector format. In fact, it won't even display properly using the developer's RMG QuickLook plugin.

Once this bug is corrected, this will be a truly incredible application.

As a wishlist, I'd like to see keyboard shortcuts for accessing the different tabs of the motif display window, e.g., Cmd-1 for Repeating Motif, Cmd-2 for Fragment Image, and Cmd-3 for Master Motif Editor. It might also be nice to have Cmd-4 toggle the editor drawer. And since I'm wishing, it would be nice if the export function appended the appropriate file extension, and provided the OS-standard checkbox for hiding the file extension if desired.

JWDRISKELL  First, pissnaround, thanks for that info from Apple. Odd thing is that I'm able to drag a plugin from the specified location to my desktop and it doesn't create a copy, it just moves. Don't tell Apple. ;-)

Second, Shock J, I considered the possibility of conflict with a third-party plugin. But below is the information from the Open Files and Ports tab of the process inspector for UserEventAgent (and I've sent this same info to JoeSoft/ProSoft three or more times); if you comb through it, the plugins that are being referenced by UserEventAgent / launchd appear to come from Apple, and most, if not all, are located in that Holy of Holies, the System folder:

Hear
Apr 8 2008

JWDRISKELL  Hear is a great app, working within a small footprint and pulling a very low CPU-load. Unfortunately, it isn't ready for final release on a Leopard installation on either PPC or Intel platforms.

I was a beta tester for Hear, and was glad to see it listed here, thinking JoeSoft had finally gotten that last bug squashed. Of course, the first thing I did was to test it--and the problem is still there. Here's how you can check it for yourself. (If you *don't* have the same problem, notify JoeSoft of your results and hardware/software setup.)

1. Install Hear and open the app. You'll be required to restart your system.

2. Open Activity Monitor (/Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor). Be sure the Show pop-up menu is set to My Processes. Scroll down the list of processes until you see the UserEventAgent process. It will have stopped responding, and its name will be displayed in red.

If you want to verify that UserEventAgent is polling the Hear plugin, click on UserEventAgent in the process list, then click on the Inspect button in the toolbar. When the process inspector opens, click on the Open Files and Ports tab. Scroll through the list. You'll see /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/Hear.plugin/Contents/MacOS/Hear about halfway down. Then close the process inspector. (Don't click the Quit button; just close the window.)

3. Open a Finder window and navigate to /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/. Drag the Hear.plugin (or simply Hear, if you have file extensions turned off) to the Desktop.

4. Back in Activity Monitor, click on UserEventAgent in the process list, then click on the Quit Process button in the toolbar. In the quit-process confirmation sheet, click the Quit button. UserEventAgent will quit, then another instance of it will be opened by launchd. Keep an eye on it for awhile. It won't turn red again (stop responding) unless you return the Hear.plugin to its point of installation and restart your system.

I've notified JoeSoft of this continued problem, and hope they'll have a fix for it soon. BTW, this problem doesn't exist for Tiger installations.

DEVONHUB  The problem with 'UserEventAgent' showing a status of not responding is not unique to a Hear installation. It is an ongoing problem on a lot of systems, including those that have never had Hear installed.

Here's one such ongoing discussion on Apple's own forums:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6075755

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=377888

At this time, we have had no reports of this problem impacting the ability to use Hear, nor have we encountered any situation where Hear was adversely causing system processes to hang. Again, this particular UserEventAgent problem is not unique to Hear.

If you encounter problems with your system after Hear has been installed, we definitely would like to know about it. Please contact us by visiting the following support page:

SAINTS1  As far as not being able to drag this and other system files to the desktop...

I don't know about Hear, but almost all System files are owned by root. Even if it appears that you are the "owner". This is done on purpose so people who don't know what they are doing don't go into the System folder and move something that is needed and then end up with a computer that does not boot.

It will let you make a copy of it to the desktop, but you cannot move it. This is normal.

PISSNAROUND  thanks. I actually called Apple and they told me the same thing. You can drag a plugin or whatever to the trash but if you drag it to the deskop or somewhere else it will just make a copy. After reading the forums about the useragent problem I'm not sure what to think. Mine does turn red after installing Hear but it doesn't seem to be affecting anything. Hear seems to run fine as does my system. I do think $50 is a tad steep to make the sound "different" as opposed to better. Guess it's all relative.

SHOCK J  I'm going to have to agree with JWDriskell regarding the "UserEventAgent" issue. I design, build and deploy web sites for a living. i'm very familiar with Linux and the terminal. Simply put, before installing Hear on my MacPro, the UserEvent Agent ran fine. AFTER installing Hear, the UserEventAgent is stuck and non-responsive. After removing Hear, UserEventAgent runs fine again. The is most certainly the result of installing this software. That does not mean that Hear is the sole cause of the issue, as it could just as well be a conflict with another 3rd party app/plugin, but Hear is definitely part of the problem. If the developers continue to say it's not, then they're just in denial.

DEVONHUB  Hello. Devon from Prosoft again.

As noted in a previous post, the problem is not isolated to Hear. This issue actually occurs with many other third party HAL (hardware abstraction layer) plugins under Leopard.

It should also be noted that although the UserEventAgent shows a status of 'not responding', we have not actually encountered a situation where it wasn't actually responding. This is part of the oddity when it happens under Leopard. That is, although Leopard is saying that it is 'not responding' it is indeed responding and working fine. Apple is aware of this issue and we hope to see it addressed in an upcoming OS release.

However, we're not waiting for an Apple update to remedy the problem and we are trying different work arounds to avoid this incorrect Leopard reporting. If we do find a reliable work around, you will see us post an update for Hear.

It is important to note that from what we have tested and seen, it appears to only be a minor issue that does not affect any system or app performance.

cheers,

dEVoN

Same thing here with Hear.app ... nice piece of software.

Moved the Hear.plugin to a different folder and ... bling... no more apparent crashes. As soon as I try running Hear.app again the plug-in is installed again and after a restart the UserEventAgent shows: not responding. Cant wait for a Hear or OS X update to fix the bug...
