JPW None whatsoever of any of the problems listed below, on my iMac, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air. (Version 10.6.2)

JPW I have a total of 5 Macs, one of which is an old PowerBook G4 - a PPC. I reverted to Tiger on this computer some time ago, and run OnyX regularly - this is absolutely and utterly essential in my experience. The machine continues to astound me with how well it runs; it remains quick and stable, and without issues. I suppose the software you require will determine the necessity of o.s. updates. For my relatively undemanding needs - a PhD student requiring not much more than word processing and internet - reverting to Tiger has served me more than adequately. My PPC machine is not greatly slower than my Intel Macs (MacBook Pro, iMac, MacBook Air). (Version 10.6)

JPW A loving God does not "create cancer". Man has chosen to unleash cancer into the genetic pool by pissing therein, i.e., on a large scale by means of environmental degradation, on a smaller scale, by choosing to partake of such activities as cigarette smoking. (Version 2.0rc2-228)

JPW Indeed, forgive me: I am not at all adept at describing technical things. I'll take another stab presently. When using Firefox, if I go to a webpage which has advertisements and I right click on the advertisement, on the contextual menu that pops up there is an option to "Block all advertisements from . . . ". However, this seems only to be the case for banner advertisements (not sure if this is the correct technical term; what I mean is advertisements that contain no moving images). However, if one does this (right click) on a non-banner advertisement - one that does contains moving images, the contextual menu only says things like "Zoom In" and "Show All" and "Quality" and "Rewind" and "Forward" and "About Adobe Flash Player 10". There is in these instances no option to block the advertisement. Probably this isn't that big of a deal for most people - and perhaps there is a way around this - or perhaps I should get out of the house more or something - but I really, really hate ads. Furthermore, Camino - at least for me - is quite a bit faster, which pretty much seals the deal for me. (Version 3.5.2)

JPW Does not block ads as well as Camino; that is, without a fairly convoluted process of right-clicking and selecting to block - and this, only for websites to which one will return. Similarly, ads which utilize FlashPlayer, simply cannot be blocked - unless FlashPlayer is blocked, which seems counterproductive to say the least; sometimes one needs FlashPlayer, i.e., for viewing things other than advertising. Camino blocks all ads, whether or not I have visited the site before. Also, Firefox is quite a bit slower than Camino. (Version 3.5.2)

MISHA You should download and install this add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865 Set it to subscribe the banner ads list best for your country and it will automatically block most ads. Except set it to allow ads from macupdate.com and even click those once in a while so we can keep delivering you our great service! :) -Misha w/ MacUpdate (Version 3.5.2)

ST00P!D M0NK3Y That's why I was confused. That's what separates Firefox from the rest. Like MISHA said, get Adblock Plus and that won't be an issue anymore. It's an amazing ad blocker... way better than the built-in blocker in Camino. Firefox is all about add-ons. Pages load a lot faster with Adblock Plus as well. (Version 3.5.2)

Microsoft Office 2008 | Jul 20 2009 |
JPW I agree that Word is quite improved and improving. However, as a PhD student who has written a Master's degree and two years so far in my Doctorate on nothing but NeoOffice, I would beg to differ that Word is the "only option for those who do university papers". In fact, I switched to NeoOffice after having lost some 40 pages of my Master's thesis while using Word. (Version 12.2)

JPW Well, that sort of begs the question; isn't calling someone "hopelessly ignorant" itself vitriolic? Are you then saying that we should indeed not pay attention to your own fairly autonomic response? Well, I guess logic doesn't come easy to everyone! (Version 12.2)

JPW After update, my status bar is 1/3 missing (left side). Words cannot describe just how crummy this piece of software is. I regularly use NeoOffice, and I think I keep Word out of a sort of sick and self-flagellatory curiosity - a curiosity to see just how bad this stuff will get; it boggles the mind! Thanks for posting your comment (twice). Well, I suppose the presence of the messages I was displaying in Console – which I posted on Dec 6 2008, which clearly indicate "AppCleaner", and this after I had uninstalled AppCleaner – would kind of suggest that yes, AppCleaner had something to do with my machines not sleeping. Or how about this: after I deleted the AppCleaner Daemon, both my computers are now sleeping without provocation. Alas, 1+1 does seem to equal 2 (Version 1.2.2)

JPW I had AppCleaner installed on my MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, but have since uninstalled the application on both computers; now neither computer will sleep automatically (with EnergySaver set to sleep after a certain period of inactivity). I am receiving this message in Console: 06/12/08 2:48:25 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.freemacsoft.appcleanerdaemon[1730]) Exited with exit code: 1 06/12/08 2:48:25 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.freemacsoft.appcleanerdaemon[1730]) posix_spawnp("/Library/Application Support/AppCleaner/AppCleaner Daemon", ...): No such file or directory This message recurs to the order of 5000 times per day, and I feel quite certain that this is causing my computers to stay awake. Hopefully there is some resolution available for this problem. (Version 1.2.2)

LARRYMCJ I've been looking at AppCleaner to replace AppZapper and while I respect your comments here, I can't find another other instance of it occurring on the internet...only yours. You can easily test to see if AppCleaner is the culprit...simply reinstall it and see if you stop getting the error messages. If that's the case, I'd just leave it installed and turned off until the next time you rebuild your machine...or not. It won't hurt anything. (Version 1.2.2)

LARRYMCJ I noticed the double comment, but the culprit is MacUpdate...I posted the comment and immediately saw both posts and no way to delete one. I have since spoken with the developer, who says that he has never seen or heard of this problems. Not sure what to think...but it's working fine here. (Version 1.2.2)

JPW As per "Call Me Yo Daddy"('s) request. The error messages I received (see below) happened on the following system: PowerBook G4 (PowerPC) 1.5 GhZ, 2 GB RAM, This is the first time I have encountered any issues with OnyX, after using it for about 6 years – not a bad record. (Version 1.9.4)
