JNAEVE I recently got a MacBook Pro 15" C2D for business use and have noticed it seemed to run hot. After reading several articles about fan control, I followed one of the links and downloaded Fan Control 1.1. Great little utility and interesting how it graps out the fan RPM vs machine temp, etc., nicely written and fairly easy to use. However, after running it for about a month, I noticed that the MacBook would randomly run the fans at maximum RPM for no apparent reason and once I launched the Fan Control utility under System Preferences, it seemed to start cooling off. I have no idea what caused this over heating issue or the fans just randomly spinning at higher RPMs with no heat issues, its hard to tell. That being said, I also noticed that sometimes when I close the lid of my MBP to put it in my bag, I seems to keep running and one day, I noticed it had been running for about an hour and when I pulled it back out, it was HOT! I had to do a hard shut down and pray nothing was damaged. Since that time, I had my MBP running on my desk with it open and after it had been asleep for several hours, noticed the fan was on and seemed to be warm as well. I again launched System Preferences and looked at the Fan Control utility and once loaded, the MBP seemed to quiet down again and return to normal. I don't know the reasons for why I'm seeing such eratic behavior but they all seem to lead to Fan Control so I had to unload it and look for alternatives. This utility may work for some and maybe is only intended for MacBooks and not MBP's but I didn't catch that in the setup. In either case, I'm going to refrain from loading it again and if you have an MBP, I'd seriously consider the alternatives. |
