JKT  But there are only 4 different mainstream web rendering engines:

Gecko

WebKit

Opera's

MS's

You don't have to test against a large number of browsers, just against a few rendering engines and IE 6. If a site is not rendering correctly in one browser using a particular rendering engine, but is in the other browsers using that engine, then it is the fault of the browser and should be fixed by the developer, not the person coding the site.

WhatSize

JKT  Actually, OmniDiskSweeper from omnigroup.com is functionally very similar to WhatSize and has been free since version 1.7 so this isn't the only app that allows you to order folders by size. UI-wise, ODS's looks are a bit dated relative to WhatSize, but it is otherwise almost identical in feature set.

JKT  It isn't 5.9.1 that has the same browser engine as Safari 4, it is the currently in development 5.9.2 sneaky peek version and this is what people are referring to in respect to the Acid Test 3. Visit the OmniGroup's blog for more info on the sneaky peeks.

Fwiw, it is exceptionally fast.

JKT  True - feature wise it is very good, but memory usage is terrible. It not only uses a lot of RAM, but it also increments upwards every time you use it to switch a space. As far as I can tell, it also doesn't release RAM until you quit it. fc4, btw.

JKT  With the 1.2.x release, PayLoom is now ready to use for my site - the "Out of stock" option that was missing from earlier versions prevented its use beforehand. I haven't had the opportunity to investigate the new CSS options, but what was already a useful plug-in just got a lot better. Also, the ability to easily duplicate items is of huge benefit.

If you would like to see it in real-world use at a live web store, please visit thelandgallery.com

JKT  Excellent to see that this is now a UB. However, the Archive is not showing GB to me as it suggests it should in the notes above, only bytes and MB.

The one criticism I would have of this app is that it only runs in one user account at a time as far as I am aware, so if another person logs in on the same machine it doesn't track their usage in addition to your own (please correct me if this is wrong). If it did, it would be perfect. In other words, if there was some means of not only getting the value for how much each individual user has used, but also the total of all users' usage, it would be 5 stars instead of 4.

JKT  I've just got this as part of the MacUpdate back to school bundle and, although the premise and features are great it is too buggy to earn more than 3 stars. Sharing by e-mail just doesn't work (which, as I am using MobileMe, is somewhat unforgivable as this should be the easiest setting to use) and there is zero feedback as to why other than a beep which doesn't infer any meaning. Worse yet, if sharing by e-mail is on, the app continuously uses greater than 100% CPU (on a C2D iMac), until it is quit and 10 to 20% when simply running in the background. Neither is acceptable behaviour.

I've marked down ease-of-use and stability because of this - if the problems were fixed then it would be a 4 star app, easily, as the features can't be faulted. What is particularly good is the ability to set activation regions for capture rather than having the whole view trigger photo taking. This means you can set areas that you won't trigger yourself through normal use. There is however, one exception and that is the sharing to .Mac - we should be able to lock down the folder the photos are uploaded to and the site to view them (otherwise it is trivial for someone to find images of the inside of your home and/or remove the images).

WEBKARNAGE  Useful review there, but I don't think you can say MobileMe is going to be the easiest thing to get good results with at the moment. Apple can't for one, hence our getting 90 days added to our contract free. They may be letting this settle before putting in more work on that part, I certainly wouldn't be chasing moving goalposts if there was something else to fix.

JKT  This is an absolutely fantastic app for what it does, but like IAMDORIAN, the price is a little steep for the current feature set. However, as long as aquafadas keep updating it for free for some more point updates, until the number of themes is higher and the current ones are further enhanced*, then it will change from being a little too pricey to being incredibly good value for money. If the theme SDK is ready, then we should also start to see some third party themes in the future, thus improving its appeal further.

Iincidentally, it integrates incredibly well with RapidWeaver (especially in conjunction with the Yourhead Blocks plugin and the BlocksBox theme) and makes adding banners or slideshows to your sites exceptionally easy.

On the negative side of things, I am also in agreement with IAMDORIAN about the restricted size of the media pane of the info palette, which is not so good. Also, the fact that the app quits whenever you close your banner is another annoyance at the moment. Aquafadas have added these to their database of feature enhancements, so hopefully they will address these shortcomings at some point.

Summary: this has good potential to be a 5++ star app, but at the moment, the price and the few GUI annoyances limit it to being a 4 star app.

* The 1.2 update adds one of my requests to the cover flow theme - the ability to adjust the spacing of the media in the flow - so I am very happy with that.

AQUAFADAS_DEV  hello

Thanks for the comments. Here are a few answers:

- yes we will keep adding more sweet stuff for free as we've done in the past for BannerZest and for all our products (PulpMotion has seen tons of new themes since it was first released). We just added a very nice new theme today to BannerZest.

- we are aware of these window size issues and will come up with something more flexible and that does take advantage of the available screen real- estate.

- application does not quit anymore when you close a banner. So this is one annoyance less in yoru list ;-)

- BannerZest SDK is ready. Feel free to contact us to get your hand on it.

JKT  Solve the horrific aliasing problem in Leopard (if possible - if you use the transparent menubar, the anti-aliased text is just not anti-aliased and is ugly as hell) and provide me with the ability to add events as well as to dos and this would be a 5 star app.

JKT  No sh*t Sherlock! The companies participating in these bundles aren't stupid - either they are first release apps that they want to get some traction in a crowded market or they are more established versions of apps that will be see new versions released (relatively) soon afterwards. Good grief - they are practically giving their software away for free in terms of how much money that get back directly by participating in these bundles so why be surprised that there is some form of marketing ploy behind it?

Fwiw, aquafadas are hardly the only company to have done this.

JKT  Every European country that is a member of the EU has been charging VAT on online purchases for years - it is a legal requirement.

You can debate the merits of whether the price should include the tax upfront or not (personally I prefer it that way over the US system of stiffing you at the counter) but for an online purchase, nothing prevents you from not proceeding once you know that tax is going to be added. It might be annoying to learn that you will be charged for it half way through the process rather than right away, but you don't have to buy the product once you know that it is going to happen.

JKT  I really like(d) this widget, but the new look is exceptionally ugly. Please give us the option to have the old look... there is a reason I don't use Apple's calendar widget.

Also, when you resize the widget in its normal display, clicking "i" to show the preferences should preserve the new size instead of reverting it to a miniscule display that only shows about three and a half of your calendars at once.

JKT  Indeed a very good addition to RW, but it isn't without problems:

1. No ability to drag and drop images to the interface and no ability to add more than one image at a time. (2 points off the ease of use).

2. No way to add a text field for explanatory text (e.g. "the photos are of the family on holiday..." or "this is our catalogue of products"

3. No way to modify the direction or intensity of the shadow or reflection

(2+3 - 1 point off features).

However, what it does do, it does very, very well.

JKT  It works and does what it needs to do, but suffers from a few issues that are more to do with Apple's Remote implementation on SE phones - namely it is a bit trigger happy/unhappy. Some joystick actions are registered really quickly, others take a few seconds to occur, which makes it a bit tricky to navigate. This is an Apple problem on my phone as the other Remote control applications (from Apple themselves) have similar issues.

JKT  Thankfully I didn't suffer the deletion issue that others have reported (it sounds as though the developers have made a similar foobar as Apple did with that iTunes 4.x installer that wiped some people's drives!).

As I haven't had this (incredibly serious) problem and the app successfully installed, I'll review it on the merits of the actual app rather than its installer (0 stars!!).

I tried the 1.1 version but found it too annoying as I was continuously having to jiggle my mouse to avoid my screensaver kicking into action or to prevent the screen going to sleep, but this has been fixed.

The addition of iPhoto viewing is great, as is the album art to the iTunes viewing and this is shaping up to become a worthy Front Row for the rest of us.

I'm unable to give it 5 stars out of 5 though as there are some annoyances and the execution of some things could be improved:

1. Lack of mouse cursor when you are using the mouse. Granted that this is meant to be a long distance media viewer, where you aren't supposed to be on your keyboard or mouse to use it, but it would be nice if you could use the mouse when you are!

2. The iTunes feature:

• could desperately do with a Shuffle feature on all playlists other than just the Album ones!

• The title display gets truncated if the song title is too long to fit on the screen. It'd be better if the title wrapped onto the screen or the font size decreased to allow it to fit.

• Add something like the JewelCase iTunes plug-in as the iTunes front end and this would be a huge improvement. Even better - allow the use of the iTunes Visualiser instead!!

3. For the media playing - it isn't obvious which media player is being used for what. E.g. I think I am right in saying that WiMP appears to be used in preference to RealPlayer for e.g. the BBC streams. WiMP's quality of playback is awful so I'd rather have the ability to select which media players are preferred if there is a choice.

4. The sound effects:

They use a Garageband loop for the background music when navigating menus which is fine, but it is too short and becomes immensely repetitious after a very short while. For the particular loop they are using there are at least 2 or 3 others that are similar that they could add in to make it more flavoursome, but it would be better if they commissioned a few ambient tracks or from e.g. the Garageband user sites. I'm sure some Mac fans would be willing to do it for no fee.

5. Navigating the menus:

Painfully slow! They need some sort of iPod like acceleration where the start of scrolling is normal pace, but if scrolling exceeds a certain period, it accelerates.

Tip. To avoid the slow scrolling, you can tap a letter on the keyboard to jump to that part of the listing. However, that requires you to be near your keyboard which half defeats the purpose of the application.

6. Movie trailers:

• Some means of starting the download and then being able to go view something else until it is finished would be nice - those HD trailers take forever to download and you can't do anything else until they have finished otherwise the download is aborted. An ability to duck out of the interface to e.g. other apps or your desktop, but have it left running in the background would be one way to do this.

• Some means of saving already downloaded trailers - it is a bit dumb that you have to re-download a trailer again if you have already viewed it in a prior session (however, this is probably a limitation imposed by Apple's stream that the app may not be able to overcome).

There are a few other things, but I can't recall them at the moment.

Having said that, this is a sterling effort - it's really good now and it can only get better.

JKT  Better than the reference section of the NEB catalogue in many respects (though lacking the plasmid maps) so a very useful addition to a biochemists/molecular geneticists toolkit. Together with 4Peaks from the same developers these apps are great.

Certainly saves you from having to hunt down the catalogue in the lab...

JKT  Very nice and with LinkBack integration built-in this becomes a handy addition to the Keynote and OmniGraffle toolset (especially as it overcomes one of the current limitations of OmniGraffle - its relatively poor 3D shape stencil).

One area where it could do with improvement is the addition of shadows/reflections to add more depth to e.g. the sphere shape which is otherwise too flat looking when filled.
