iCrypt | Oct 20 2009 |
JFM I need two small clarifications: first, is this application related to the other app by the same name, produced by djodjodesign? I realize that I had installed that app last year, believing it was a new release of iCrypt by Julien Couthouis, but apparently it was not. Other clarification needed: as I install iCrypt version 1.2, I see in the Finder that the date of the application is 2005. Somewhat strange for a new release of the app in 2009. Or did I miss something here? (Version 1.2)

LOUNGE DELUXE The website of the dev says that this version (1.2) was introduced on March 5, 2005. So you are right, there's something odd about this re-release. (Version 1.2)

Pagehand | Jul 27 2009 |
JFM It is not yet complete, it is a work in process, but it is a very nice tool. I would like especially to praise the elegant, pleasant, non intrusive interface. Moreover, the entire tool is clearly meant for people who write and enjoy writing. The use of PDF as a format for saving is unexpected, but allows to share documents with other people easily, due to PDF universality. Of course, there is a related limitation: one needs to own Pagehand for working on a document created with Pagehand. However, for documents that are not too complex, it is easy to export into some other formats, preferably RTF. Since it is still at the initial stage, a number of improvements are needed, but they are all in the work, it is just a matter of patience for users. For instance, footnotes need to be added. I am confident it will improve: the developer is responsive, and the forum, while small at this point, is already starting to be active. A promising tool - I used it already for writing a few small texts, and I was very pleased: writing was pleasant, fluid. And insofar I can witness from my own experience, it was completely stable. Radio Gaga | Jul 14 2009 |
JFM If you allow me... I am not connected in any way to Radio gaga, just a happy customer. But I would suggest that you keep in mind this is a 1.0 release. I am confident that it will develop over time. I suggest that anybody experiencing the same problem as yours reports it to the developer, so that he/she will consider adding those other types to a future release. This is a constructive approach, and I feel confident it will be considered, since the developer appeared to be quite responsive to peoples' inquiries. I agree, however, that such limitations should be clearly mentioned on the developer's website. (Version 1.0)

Radio Gaga | Jul 13 2009 |
JFM JAZZYGUY - For instance, I try AncientFM.com right now - no problem at all. The only one that I tried now and wasn't working was AVRO Classical Light High Definition. I didn't have to make any setup - just downloaded Radio Gaga, entered the registration, and everything started working fine. I am at a loss to understand what is happening in your case - especially since other apps for music are working fine. The only possible explanation: a conflict between Radio Gaga and another app. And just in case: did you try to repair permissions? and maintenance with Onyx? I doubt that it can solve your problem, but in such cases already something worth doing. Good luck! I hope that you will find a way out. Radio Gaga is a nice application, I have been using it for hours without any trouble since posting my original comment. (Version 1.0)

Radio Gaga | Jul 12 2009 |
JFM I have boguht Radio Gaga yesterday using the MU Promo, and I am very pleased. Not only is the interface pleasant and easy to use, but the selection of stations is quite good. Regarding the problem of stations not available, I had the same experience for a few - but it is often similar with iTunes. Most stations were working fine. Some that didn't work when I made a first attempt worked finally a few hours later. I am listening to Radio Gaga while writing this comment: I have tested tonight several stations (in the Folk and Classical sections), and ALL that I selected were working tonight. Considering moreover that Radio Gaga is only at the very initial stage, it is a very promising application, and can be used to my full satisfaction already now (although I would hope that future releases would allow for editing of recordings, as other similar tools allow their user to do) - I am quite confident this will come. URL Manager Pro X | Jun 14 2009 |
JFM It is important to know that URL Manager Pro does NO LONGER WORK WITH SAFARI 4. It cannot export to Safari 4 and actually deletes the existing bookmarks from Safari 4. Be warned, and let's hope that the developer will issue a new version soon. For the time being, I have found the following trick for exporting from URL Manager Pro to Safari 4: 1) export to Camino (one of the few browsers for which the export still seems to work fine); 2) then use BookIt (or buy it, in case you do not have it already); 3) use BookIt for exporting from Camino to Safari. It works - at least a temporary substitute... (Version 3.5b10)

RAGE Domainer | Apr 8 2009 |
JFM The definable fields are a great improvement. My next wish would be for more extensions to be supported, starting with .ws and .cc. But it would ne nice to see also some important European extensions (e.g. .fr, .be, .ch...) to be supported. Generally, RAGE Domainer works well, but it is true that it is sometimes slow at the time of launching. (Version 1.9)

JFM Exactly same reaction here! Either you target professional spies (but I assume they have their own tools!!), or you suggest unwillingly that the app might actually be spying on our encrypted data! JFM I have just bought the upgrade to version 4, and I am really glad I have done it: it is a major step forward, it makes handling pages much more pleasant with the sidebar showing pages and an easy way to change their size. Moreover, the general design is much more convincing than the previous versions. I was using it quite frequently already, although I didn't enjoy it too much. Now I feel that I will be using it more, but also enjoy using it: from a useful tool, it has become a nice tool. (By the way, I posted this comment because I was quite perplexed to read previous comments about a "buggy" app: in my experience for the past 3 years, it has alway been stable.) (Version 4.0)

JFM I am quite surprised. It is true that there was a time when it used not to be reliable, and I switched for some time to other systems. DomainTracker | Aug 12 2008 |
JFM Agree with you. It used to be the best, full of promises - and then the developer stopped to update it. A pity, really! For the time being, the only acceptable substitute is RAGE Domainer... but there are many TLDs which it does not support, and it is not perfect (when updating multiple domains, it goes on endlessly), so it is not yet the ideal solution. JFM It used to work really fine and was my preferred encryption app, but it is no longer updated and does not work on Intel. One can only regret that developers launch an application on the market, and then no longer update them: I used it for two or three years, and then had to give it up - not without decrypting and reencrypting my files first. JFM This app works very well. I have used it for sveral months now. I did never experience any problem for backing up. Since I did never need to restore, I cannot say how it would work in such a case, but this is meant as a last recourse for a possible emergency situation anyway, and the fact that the app is working well makes me confident that I wouldn't have any trouble. JFM Interesting - simplicity of use. Although I already own applications which more or less do the same work in a simple way - earlier it was Tresor (unfortunately not adjusted for Intel, a pity), and now GoSecure. JFM Unfortunately, I must agree. I had set for some time Omniweb as my primary browser, and I like it, but the current version is unstable, it crashes often. Sorry, I have now gone to Opera (excellent newest version), and I wait for Omniweb to improve. Moreover, Omniweb has a tendency to slow down after a few days if one does not empty the cache manually, I have also noticed. I have good hope that the problems will sooner or later be solved, but it is a little bit sad to see a good app going backward rather than forward with the newer versions... (Version 5.6)

BitClamp | Nov 2 2007 |
JFM It seems attractive and well-done, I paid attention to it, since I am looking for a good software of that type. I downloaded it, but there is something which made me decide not to use it: when entering the password for encrypting/decrypting the files, there is no confirmation field. This is dangerous: if I mistype something without noticing it, I then won't be able to decrypt the file. Unless there is a good reason for not having a confirmation field, I would myself be hesitant to use such an application for encryption. If there is a reason for not having a confirmation field, it would be interesting to hear from the developer why? Anyway, good luck for what seems to have the potential for a nice product. Thanks for the reviews, here are my responses: Just to get the light weight comment out of the way: it was 9 megs... then we put the 512x512 icon in for leopard :-) I think at the moment those apps that macroxx mentioned, look great for encryption... but only encrypted, compressed archives (we offer both). None have windows versions (not that we do yet). None offer covert file types. But more importantly, those are all compression apps, where encryption isnt really on their roadmap, its there but not a focus. BitClamp is in its infancy and we have a tonne of great features on the way (applescript, automator, completely covert files). We just shipped 1.0 don't write us off yet ;) As for the password confirmation field, as BitClamp was designed to be very, very quick to use. However, I see that it is a user's preference whether he wishes to confirm or not and this will be added in 1.1 :-). All input is greatly received, we are only at the start of this app's roadmap! JFM I had tested previous versions, which were unconvincing. I tested again this one, but it seems not all problems have been solved. It scans domains well and fast. It launches domains well and fast. But it has problems with registrar and expiration dates. I tested it with several domain names. Out of half-a dozen .com and .info names (all registered for years), it was only able to identify registrar for one, and expiration date for none. Regarding national domain names, it did not work for any of those I tested. Domain Tracker continues to work much better, but seems no longer to be updated. If Master of my Domains could finally work properly, I might well be interested to buy it - but certainly not as long as it has such weaknesses. (I am on iMac Intel.) (Version 1.5.5)

JFM While I think that the absence of services does not represent a sufficient reason for giving one star to an application, missing services are indeed for me too THE reason for not using Navigator, which otherwise might be attractive. Like the author of the first comment, I use services quite often in my daily workflow (e.g. for capturing text from webpages into Devon Think Pro), and not having services makes a browser nearly useless, since it would mean switching to another browser each time I decide to capture something. JFM I like Mellel very much, but I must admit that it is not always easy to use and has its constraints. Nisus is easier to use, elegant, and pleasant, although Nisus Writer Express has not been 100% stable in my experience (especially when handling several pages of text with footnotes at at time with cut and paste). Mellel did NEVER quit abruptly, NWE did sometimes. Nisus Writer Pro, which I have immediately bought, adds those features which were missing in NWE (e.g. widows and orphans control). It has an attractive interface, very familiar to people who have already used NWE, it just offers more possibilities. It is pleasant to use, it is easy to find one's way. There is a very detailed manual. I think it is really on its way to become a substitute of choice for people on Mac who do not want or do not like to use Word. Provided it proves to be completely stable (only time will say), then I think many of us will make it their word processor of choice. (Version 1.0)

Moreover: it took me time to find a good third party product for checking spelling and grammar once I have finished writing a document (I use Antidote for the French language), my experience has been that checkers incorporated in a word processor rarely meet one's specific needs. I think it is much better, for that, to leave everyone find one's own favorite tool, while Mellel developers should continue to focus on word processing properly, as they do so well. JFM You are right about the fact that documents should not be kept captive, since one does never know if an application will exist forever. But I see it from another angle: provided an application allows for export of its entire content (including its structure), then it is fine. I don't know how it is with KIT, but I use DEvon Think Pro, and exporting the content of a folder or of an entire database is not a problem. This is actually one of the reasons why I chose it. JFM If it would quit after launching the desired program, it would be of little use, and indeed your technique of aliases in a folder would be a better one: the beauty of Overflow is to have all those programs at hand, in just a second, and to be able to launch them instantly without cluttering the desktop. Having to launch Overflow first would diminish greatly its usefulness. I paid the licence for two Macs, and I am glad I did: Overflow is very pleasant to use, and very stable - never one crash in two years of use. I have it activated automatically when I launch my Macs. The environment it provides is very pleasant, one can also set différent parameters according to one's own wish (size of icons, etc.). Quite often, I was going back to AppleWorks, and then completing the work in Excel. Tables has solved my problem and provided an elegant substitute. I bought it once it got the ability to export to Excel. And export works well: I do all the work in Tables, then export the finished work to Excel, without any problem. What I like is that Tables is that it is rather easy to use - there is a learning curve for people like me who are not very comfotable with spreadsheets, but it is not steep, and I assume there is no learning curve at all for somebody who is more familiar with spreadhseets. Moreover, Tables offers a very pleasant environment, Mac-like: I had tested the other spreadheet applications for Mac, none was as easy to use, none provided the same comfort and elegant, uncluttered, bright environment. Thanks to Tables, I find spreadsheets much less intimidating than they used to be! In addition, I should mention that support is top quality. Each time I asked a question, I received a courteous, precise, detailed reply from the developer a few hours later. Always very helpful, taking time to explain even simple things which I had not understood properly. Regarding stability, never any problem. Once again, I am not a heavy user, but from my own experience for the past two months, I can only praise that application. There is still some room for improvements, but, for all people like myself, who need spreadsheets from time to time but want a simple, understandable environment, I have the feeling that Tables is on the way to become THE right solution on the Mac. DEVONthink Pro | Feb 20 2007 |
JFM While I agree that it would be useful to be able to open several databases at the same time, I am very surprised by your claim that one would be captive of DT Pro: one of the reasons I have bought it is that it is NOT the case: it is very easy to export all the content out of DT Pro. Even if Devon would go out of business (which I don't expect in a foreseeable future, considering the growing community of users), I would still be able to keep all my data and to import it to some other app. I suggest that you test the export feature of DT Pro and see by yourself. True, the learning curve is steep, and maybe you have overlooked that feature. It takes time to discover all the possibilities included in DT Pro. (Version 1.3b3)

JFM I bought Button Builder two years ago, I use it from time to time and find it useful for creating some simple buttons - except that it can only create buttons with text on one line. But why is it no longer mentioned on RealMac website? Does it mean the developer has given up that product? It know RapidWeaver keeps them busy, but it is really too bad if they no longer support a product which still has its use for people who bought it and enjoy using it. (Version 4.0.2)

JFM Very good and useful - it does only one little thing, but it is helpful. Just one small suggestion for an improvement: the lower one of the two Finder windows covers the dock, which is neither pleasant nor convenient. Ir reduces somewhat the usefulness of the application, since one needs to resize the lower window if its lower part is not to come behind the doc. It would be a good idea to have the option of having the lower window staying above the dock, if this seems feasible. (Version 1.3b)

JFM Really? After reading your message, I have downloaded it again and installed it, but I do still get the same error message, it does not launch. (Version 1.0b)

JFM Thank you for the information. But since it claims to be PPC/Intel... obviously the developer should inform potential users in a better way... It is strange too that no website is provided about the app, there is only the name of the developer. But, after all, it is a beta version, let's see what will happen next. (Version 1.0b)

JFM Strange indeed! When I attempt to open it, I get the message: "You cannot open this application because it won't work on this system"! I am on iMac G4, PPC, using Mac OS 10.4.8. I wonder which system Tominated Browser is meant for... never had something like that before, and I have dozens of apps on my Mac... (Version 1.0b)

Apple Mac OS X | Apr 3 2006 |
JFM Juts downloaded it - seems to work quite well, with visible effects. Just two observations: 1) Before downloading, I had 20 Go free on my HD. Now, it is up to 22.3 Go. 2) Before downloading, when repairing authorizations, I had that long list of repairs, always the same, even if I did it several times in the same day. Now, after installing the update, there is nothing to be repaired. I cannot make other comments at this point, I need to test more, but those two seemed worth mentioning. (Version 10.4.6)

JFM Of course, I meant repair PERMISSIONS - sorry for using the French word by mistake... (Version 10.4.6)

MSWFUJOWDFFYC Just FYI, this doesn't necessarily cause less permissions problems, disk utility just doesn't report when "special permissions are used for..." (Version 10.4.6)

BRUCE_Y this one improvement will encourage me to go for 10.4.6 sooner than later. I had sent into Apple Feedback this suggestion -- so they listened to me! i feel so special ... ... well, they listened to the many who complained about that feature change in one of the earlier Tiger updates which started filling the Disk Utility report with message lines that Apple later told us to ignore. And it does go to show a very positive aspect of Apple OS -- If you find a bug or user un-friendly feature, please go to the quick and easy to use Apple Feedback page and let them know. http://www.apple.com/feedback/ (Version 10.4.6)

Blue Crab | Feb 9 2006 |
JFM When I switched to the Mac two years ago, I tried several tools for downloading websites, inclluding BlueCrab, which did not convince me at that time. I then chose to use primarily SiteSucker. However, recently, I have not been very pleased with performances of Site Sucker, so I decided to try all available tools on one and the same website, and to see what the result would be. Well, although I initiatlly wondered if I should try again Blue Crab, I am glad I did: it did the best job of all tools I tested (half a dozen of them), and by far. Using the same website as a test case, some tools donwloaded only the initial page, other ones downloaded 43 files, or 76 files - despite careful configurations according to instructions. But when it came to Blue Crab... well, with relatively little need for configuration, it donwloaded all files. i.e. more than 1,200! I was really impressed and immediately bought a license. (It is nice that one can use it with full functionality for ten days, so it offers real opportunity to check first if it works properly.) Moreover, since I experienced a problem with one file, I wrote to the developer: he was really responsive, and he wrote several messages to inquire about details, promising to investigate if it was a bug of Blue Crab, in which case he would correct it in the next release. So really an excellent customer service. It is very simple: after testing all available tools for downloading websites, there is no doubt in my mind that Blue Crab is currently the best in its category for Mac users. I advise even people who were not convinced in the past to try it again. (Version 4.3.8)

Photorescue | Dec 1 2005 |
JFM Impressive! Works very well! My sister arrived tonight at my home: she was unable to download the 220 pictures she had on her Nikon camera. I made several attempts myself, no way to do it. She had gone to the local shop where she had bought the camera, they attempted with a card reader: no success, card corrupted. I then remembered having read about PhotoRescue Wiward and PhotoRescue Expert. I decided to test Wizard, since it seemed to be the easiest one to use. I selected PTP, didn't recognize the disk. I then tried with Mass Storage, and this time it identified the disk. PhotoRescue spent a few minutes attempting to access the content, and then... miracle! One by one, the "lost" pictures began to appear on the screen, it recovered all of them! No need to say I immediately bought Wizard, which allowed me to get the code for activating the code. (By the way, this is a very nice way of providing the ability to test a shareware: I didn't need to buy it before making absolutely sure it would work for the specific task I wanted to do.) Once I got my code and activated fully the Wizard, it was just a matter of a few minutes to have all the pictures on my computer. And I did not even need a card reader, although this is recommended: I managed to do it straight from the camera! Wonderful was also the fact that it is extremely easy to use even for a non technical user: it just does the job, the only thing one has to do is to click on "Next". After this very good experience, I just don't understand how there can be people who are not pleased with that Wizard! For me, it did its job wonderfully, and I give it 5 stars on each category (true, it does not have many features: but how can one complain about that when the main feature is... simplicity! why to have many features when it just works the way it is? and people who want more are free to buy the expert version).
