INFORMATIX I was looking for an easy to use recording app to work with my iMic. I had a few basic requirements: - Support of full 24-bit resolution (This helps to reduce quality losses during the edit/effect processing and before normalizing and reducing to 16-bit CD quality. Unfortunately apps that use the old Sound Manager API in OS X only work up to 16-bit at recording.) - Automatic time out. (So you can start stereo and leave after setting the recording to stop after x minutes.) - Direct to disk. (Griffin's Final Vinyl annoys by taking forever to draw curves and writing to disk after the recording is already done.) Audio In meets these criteria, and you can't beat the price. Thanks to the developer. Nevertheless I hope he still reads this although Audio In seems like it has not seen an update in several years. Some suggestions for UI improvement: I would like to see and control all basic features from the main window. That doesn't mean "window clutter", because Audio In focuses on doing just one thing, and do that right. - One button to set the time-out for the recording. I find it helpful if this time-out value is displayed at all times in the main window together with standard controls as used in the date/time pref pane. (The menu command is not as easily available. Plus it annoys by immediately starting the recording after setting a value. But is has the benefit of a keyboard shortcut which could be kept and would then select the value ready for editing.) - One button to set the output file. Again, I wish this information would also always be displayed at all times in the main window. (Here, too, the recording currently starts right after setting the output file unless you put the name in the preferences.) - Replacing the turn knobs with sliders. The first are good in real live. But with the mouse sliders are better. (Oscilloscope setting and playthrough volume.) - Add the option of displaying a level meter with peak hold rather than an oscilloscope. - Display output file type and quality as well as input quality in the main window. (Amadeus does that and it's a nice help to make sure you get the quality you desire, not more nor less. Amadeus, e. g. can only record from the iMic at 16 bit and informs the user about that.) Now that was lengthy. But again: Thanks to the developer for creating Audio In and thank you for making it free. (Version 1.0.3) |
