StoryMill
Jul 3 2008

HOMEWORLD  Amen to that.

I bought this once when it was called Avenir, found it useless; bought it again when it appeared in a MacUpdate bundle as StoryMill, not realizing it was the same thing, and found the intriguing "timeline" feature to be not just useless but counterproductive. I can build more useful timelines on my own in Excel, when I need them. Other than that, just give me a clean, flexible word processor (I use Pages 3.x now), and I'll personally be much better off.

Version 3.x (StoryMill) doesn't seem to randomly lose data any more the way version 2.x (Avenir) did... but for me, that's largely because I'm no longer putting any data into it.

HOMEWORLD  Interesting. It didn't report the total size for me, either. Just showed a question mark... same as anything I try (and usually fail) to download from HP's servers.

HOMEWORLD  "Modified the code to improve the application."

Well, yeah... but please try to be more vague next time.

Seriously, what's the point? The OS has had this capability since... I can't even remember how long. That's how long it's been.

AIFF from PCM

***..

HOMEWORLD  Works great -- when it works. Same problem with b11 that KENNEDYBRANDT posted previously: after using OSEx to rip audio from a concert DVD (which I own), this utility could only convert 7 of the 14 tracks. The others were listed in red in the bin and could not be converted.

(Ultimately, I ended up working with VOB files and another audio extraction utility anyway since OSEx put a constant clicking into the PCM files that this utility could convert.)

It would still be my first attempt to ease and speed, but my 50% success rate for it may keep me from trying again.

HOMEWORLD  Yes, I'm clear on what the name suggests... but what does it MEAN? What qualifies as IDLE vs. NOT IDLE? That the user is not actively doing anything in a foreground process that calls the processor?

Without definition, I still think this is utterly useless and the posted answers don't answer a thing.

HOMEWORLD  Stability is 2 because "N/A" is not available and I can't give anything about this useless little thing a positive rating.

Stability is actually impossible to evaluate, given that the product does almost nothing.

HOMEWORLD  *Choke*

Darn it, Lee, you actually had a decent argument going there until possibly the most tangential analogy ever written.

You both have good points. And you both seem to be partly missing the other's point. (And you'll both probably disagree with that, thus reinforcing my point.)

I personally use Xtorrent because it looks better than the alternatives. I personally won't ever pay for it because paying for something in order to get other somethings for free is simply counter to my own rules of acquisition. Plus, I'm cheap.

HOMEWORLD  RC,

It's called the Sarbannes-Oxley Act. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SARBANNES-OXLEY

If you don't like it -- and few do -- blame the jerks at Enron (one of whom is already dead, which takes the fun out of blaming him) for abusing every conceivable accounting practice so badly that the Federal Gov't had no choice but to close loopholes and lay down clear guidelines for how revenue must be accounted.

Yes, it's no fun for consumers, but Apple's just complying with Federal regulations here. Many other companies have already followed suit, and many more will do so in the future.

Better get used to it.

HOMEWORLD  As one who is new to bit-torrent clients, I really appreciate the comparative insights in the previous post. (I was wondering if I was the only one who was so frustrated with Azureus' nightmarish UI that I can't run the thing anymore.) And TomatoTorrent... feels like it belongs in the OS 7.5 era.

My first impression of XTorrent was that it's a bit too complicated and busy, but based on the comments here, I think the real problem is that I was too impatient to give it a fair chance.

HOMEWORLD  4.27.1 > 4.4.1 makes perfect sense. 27 is a higher number than 4.

You appear to assume that once one hits a .9 increment, the next higher digit *must* be increased. This is actually not the practice in most software version management (though Apple has tried to establish it as a precedent).

Going from 4.4.1 to 4.27.1 could happen like this:

4.4.1, 4.5, 4.6, 4.7, 4.8, 4.9, 4.10, 4.11, 4.12, 4.13, 4.14, 4.15, 4.16, 4.17, 4.18, 4.19, 4.20, 4.21, 4.22, 4.23, 4.24, 4.25, 4.26, 4.27, 4.27.1

HOMEWORLD  Yes, I just experienced the exact same problem when launching Entourage 11.2.1 under OS X 10.4.4 for the first time since installing -- but not even *using* -- OnyX 1.6.7.

I can't even imagine how OnyX could be at fault here, but this is too weird a coincidence.

Having worked for Microsoft for five years, I'm 100% comfortable blaming Microsoft for this 100%. But what would I be blaming them for?

HOMEWORLD  Okay, I'm the second or third person to hit this issue today. Not blaming OnyX, but something's up here that I hope the developer can look into.

Launching Entourage for the first time after installing Onyx 1.6.7, Entourage reported that my database was damaged after about 1 minute of use. Rebuild was successful, but I'll have to wait and see if it persists.

OS X 10.4.4, OnyX 1.6.7, Entourage 11.2.1.

HOMEWORLD  Elegant, slick, fast, reliable, and free! It does the job when three or four other FLACistic utilities fail to do anything but launch and endlessly spin a "busy" indicator.

The smooth fade-in at launch is nice. I love simple utilities that do exactly what they're supposed to do, but have the grace to look pretty while doing it.

If it only had built-in TiVo support, could mix chocolate martinis, and troubleshoot my car's braking issues, it would be perfect.

HOMEWORLD  Not bad, but I don't see that it's "better enough" over the free iController to be worth $10.

Seems unresponsive at times, and is too obtrusive and distracting to get a home on my menubar. Deleted it after about five minutes.
