HENDRIK HOLTMANN  smcFanControl sits in your menubar. Maybe it is very populated? Switch to an applicatio (E.g.) Textedit with a small menu bar..then you should see smcFanControl.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  You mean version 2.1.3.1 is now available, not version 2.3.1.1.

HENDRIK HOLTMANN  The power-fan-supply is unfortunately not controllable. This is a restriction in the SMC firmware and can not be influenced. I am sorry that I don't have better news about this.

Best,

Hendrik

in general you are right: The SMC is something only Apple should program. This is why smcfancontrol takes a very conservative root: It only sets the minimum fan speed and does not change the whole programming of the SMC fan controller. So the fan still reacts as apple intended it (ramping up when the machine gets hotter etc.), just the base speed is changed. Als notice that Apple did exactly the same thing (setting a higher base speed) on the newest Core2Duo Macbook (Pro's).

Best,

Hendrik

HENDRIK HOLTMANN  My comment was not meant as an offense. I just got some mails by people that were irritated cause icyclone and smcfancontrol look so similar and they kinda pointed me at the credits thing-maybe they just looked on the web-site and found it missing there.

Of course your program is a welcome addition and improvement.

HENDRIK HOLTMANN  Yes, it is based on parts of the source-code of smcFanControl. I am the author of smcFanControl and most parts are 1:1 copied. It copies parts of Fan Control (another fan app) for the automatic control mode as well. This is ok, cause both apps are Open-Source and it's a welcome addition to the existing apps. But in my opinion the author of iCyclone should at least mention the other authors in credits he uses source-code from.

KKILLIAN  if you hed have look the program with more attention you can see that i mention the other developers and that i also tnx all that where i take ideas and code. If you see in the About panel you can see my credits and i'm also completing the page of credits on site, if you give me that time....i only develope a free program from others free program and release the code, don't think i have do something of so orrible. And at last it isn't a copy is an improvement and more have to come.

HENDRIK HOLTMANN  You can't use FanControl and smcFanControl at the same tme. Fan Control is a background daemon, so it ovverrides the settings you do in smcFanControl. So make sure you deinstall Fan Control or at least stop the daemon!

Best,

Hendrik

HENDRIK HOLTMANN  from the F.A.Q:

Why does smcFanControl has it's own authentication dialog and is not presenting the OS X default authentication-dialog?

smcFanControl needs special rights for setting the fanspeed. The OS X default authentication dialog would appear everytime you want to set a new fanspeed. So I tried to work around that and the way it works is, I ask for the credentials before the OS X dialog pops up, save the data to keychain and then pass it to the authentication service (just for the ones who want to know).
