GUILLAUMEK LaTeXiT looks lovely but it requires installing LaTeX. The problem is, the MacTeX distrib is a big whooping 1.2GB install (see: http://www.tug.org/mactex/ ). Apple's Grapher meets most of my needs but I'd be interested in trying LaTeX. Anyone can explain me why LaTeX needs that much memory, and if there is an alternative distrib with a smaller footprint?

SGNX latex is a whole self-contained system for producing scientific documents that can contain complex equations/tables/graphics/much more. it is quite the standard in academia. latexit, on the other hand, is more like just a little "widget" that lets you test some thing or cook up some snippet real quick. i personally think mactex is the best latex package (in terms of ease of installation/usage and speed, and the integration of different parts) among all platforms; and latexit is just a sexy little kit that comes in quite handy now and then (Version 2.0.0)

SGNX on the mactex site, there's a linked page http://www.tug.org/mactex/morepackages.html where there's this thing: BasicTeX-2008 (54.1 MB). i never tried it before but from the description it should be relatively capable for its size. (Version 2.0.0)

WILLY_ME A smaller version of mactex is available on their webpage - ~50MB. It will work for 90% of the people who need tex. It is called BasicTeX. http://www.tug.org/mactex/morepackages.html If you require a portion of TeX not included in BasicTeX you can install the required part via the "TeX Live Utility" - do a Google search to find where to download it. GUILLAUMEK I think Iconz is wrong in calling the project "dead", though he makes a point in that QS has actually seen little evolution in the last years. Take a look at the changes committed to code: http://code.google.com/p/blacktree-alchemy/source/list There is only one really dedicated dev, tiennou7, to whom obviously go our warm appreciation. Despite his hard work - check out the massive number of commits made this summer - the project has sometimes gone for months without any change to the code. This all said, I still believe that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I'm fine with QS being just maintained. But to move forward, QS needs more devs. (Version 1.0b56a7)

GUILLAUMEK As a matter of fact, Silverlight isn't that bad. It does not take over any other plugin, or puts your computer at risk, or invades privacy AFAIK. GUILLAUMEK The latest versions (1.73 and 1.74) of Transmission have some issues. 1.73 and 1.74 are currently homing on ban list on some trackers (i.e brokenstones), because of various "connective problems" and up/down data sometimes not being counted by trackers which enforce ratios. Hopefully, 1.75 will sort things out. Until then, stick with 1.72. (Version 1.75b1)

Synergy | Sep 4 2009 |
I'm done with Synergy. I bought my license back in 2005. First there was this new Synergy Advance thing. It was alpha software sold 10$. It offered very little more than what was already in Synergy Classic, but with bugs. It hasn't been updated since 2007. Some folks bought it, just ask them how they feel about this... Actually you can still buy licenses on Wincent's website.. (sic) Then there were the first Leopard years, with OS X updates breaking every other Synergy Classic version. The app would crash, covers would not load. It was a mess. It took months before we had a working Leopard-optimized (read: garbage-collector enabled) version. So we were paying either for alpha, or poorly maintained software. But Synergy Classic was still good enough and we liked it. And now we cannot get plain regular support for our then supposedly unlimited licenses bought before 2006? OK it has been five years, but Obj2.0 and garbage collection aren't exactly features. Synergy has not got any new feature for years (check version history, it's all bug fixes and manic updates to make software requirements ever more drastic. Does an iTunes controller really need 10.6 to run properly..?) All we're asking for is continued support. Anyone has a link to 3.5.5a? I shouldn't have overwritten mine.. (Version 4.0.1b)

Glims | Aug 16 2009 |
GUILLAUMEK Glims is an input manager, a hack, because Apple won't create an official plugin system for Safari. And if you spend enough time browsing you'll notice issues. I don't know if it's Apple's or Glims' fault but it doesn't matter. Safari crashes more with Glims installed. It does not crash all the time, but it does crash noticeably more often, no matter how hard its makers work to make their software stable. In my experience with Glims, whenever i had more than 6/8 tabs open, after a long browsing session, i would expect the occasional crash, in which case it would usually also forget the last minutes of my browsing history. Bad, bad, bad.. I have loved and used Glims for months. I always took the time to wait for a Glims update before applying a Safari update, in order to avoid situations such as the one that arose with the 4.0.3 Safari update. But I have stopped using it and wouldn't recommend it now. That said, Glims is the best plugin for Safari currently available IMO. It's just not good enough. (Version 1.0b20)

This is the interesting part, where it's better than Sparkle. This framework seems to handle files without executables, which Sparkle lacks AFAIK. You can't currently update stuff like plugins, drivers, file systems.. in fact, for most of the stuff installed in /Library Sparkle can't help you. I think the only exception are preference panes which can check for updates by themself. You actually need a program or daemon which contains the Sparkle framework to checks for updates. Think Battlecruiser 3000AD.. Also, unlike WoW, this game is a lot less focused on instant fun. The game is slower paced and it takes a long time and a good ship+stats before one can venture in 0.0 and get a taste of PVP, the core of EVE imo. In a nutshell, you can't just drop in a few times a week, play an hour or two, and still have fun. The stats system reduces that problem a bit though. That said, EVE is great if you dig complexity and depth over instant gratification. You just need to be unemployed or something to enjoy it I guess :p (Version 5.10.56866)

I've been pretty lucky with this and I only see a crash every few days, but I know others see them all the time: luck of the draw, it would seem. I'm going to put together a couple of new releases which incorporate this fix for the artwork issue: * 3.5a7: a new build of the alpha series, which will still unfortunately suffer from Apple's NSAppleScript bug. * 3.2.1: a new build of the stable 3.2 series, which won't be affected by the NSAppleScript issue (never has been, never will be) because it doesn't use Leopard's Garbage Collection. I just tried and I'm downloading OnyX at 800KB/s on a 20M dsl line. It seems lots of people have trouble DLing the soft though so maybe this is indeed a server-side issue. (Version 1.9.4b1)

Airfoil | Feb 20 2008 |
GUILLAUMEK Also the sync delay problem is linked to Apple's design choices, not Rogue Amoeba's. It's unavoidable with the current Airport and AppleTV. (Version 3.1)

GUILLAUMEK Use Airfoil vith VLC. You can resync sound & video in VLC using keys F and G by 50ms increments. Not ideal but gdoes the job. (Version 3.1)

Aurora | Feb 19 2008 |
GUILLAUMEK Last free Aurora version (3.3.5) available at: http://s3.amazonaws.com/metaquark/Aurora-3.3.5.zip You can't get a better deal. It still beats Awaken, Alarm Clock and all others. The right balance between ease-of-use and features. (Version 4.0.6)

SpamSieve | Jan 30 2008 |
GUILLAUMEK Agreed. Gmail's server-side spam filtering is one of the best. With Mail, Entourage of Thunderbird's standard spam filter, i get very little spam. However, Gmail does give a few false positives from time to time, though mostly useless newsletters I should never had subscribed to in the first place. (Version 2.6.6)

SPECTRAL7 Not overpriced IMO as Vjing is a small market so how can Devs recoup the cost of developing a complicated top level piece of software ? One gig will pay for software! i have had free updates for last 2 years and there is no other software that comes close. (Version 2.5.7)

GUILLAUMEK Good point. A special price for students would be nice however. (Version 2.5.7)

GUILLAUMEK There are optimized builds as usual. For Intel, http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=594213&sid=d705091e01e909d48f9793a9ab4db53f For PPC, http://www.rpm-mozilla.org.uk/builds/camino/ You can also try http://www.pimpmycamino.com

MACUPDATE ADMIN Here's a link to unofficial Intel - optimized builds of Camino 1.5.4: http://www2.hawaii.edu/~coreya/camino/ This developer goes by the name heronstalker and has done some nice work. I've used his Intel-optimized builds in the past. (Version 1.5.4)

GUILLAUMEK From my own experience, these bugs have been around for quite a while already. Try the trunk builds (pre-1.6) if you feel adventurous. These may include a fix. (Version 1.5.2)

Monopoly Here & Now | Sep 19 2007 |
GUILLAUMEK Agreed. Little Snitch serves many purposes. First and most important it allows its user to spot when an app calls home. Though I've never seen such thing on a Mac, there are many Windows applications that send personnal data. And athome, don't be rude. (Version 1.0)

Nokia Multimedia Transfer | Sep 11 2007 |
GUILLAUMEK As i said, unconstructive criticism ^^ However, i am not sure you'll want to use this app for caller pictures. You would be much better off editing them in Address Book. All NMT can do for you concerning caller pictures is import iPhoto pictures, which you then have to set inside your E60 where i believe you don't have zoom/pan controls (correct me if i'm wrong). NMT may not be the best choice for caller picture. As for ring tones, i guess it's a matter of personnal preference. Unless you frequently change your ringtones, Bluetooth File Exchange works fine. It does not take more than two clicks with "Send file to BT device" shift-command-B shortkey. I believe NMT wasn't made for your kind of device in the first place. Plus the soft is still beta. This obviously does not mean its support should not be considered but you can't blame Nokia for not making this a priority. Hope you found less smarty-pants and more education in that comment, edit: i see E60 support at http://europe.nokia.com/A4423135 ... (Version 1.1.1)

Synergy | Aug 26 2007 |
GUILLAUMEK I agree. Synergy is fine as it is. It never crashed on me in over 3 years. And i believe there is no need for new features. The app does its job. Apple should contract Wincent to pack Synergy into iTunes. Then again, i wouldn't recommend buying the app. There are free alternatives that work great. (Version 3.1.5b)

avc1Decoder | May 15 2007 |
MAC ADAM Perian is not for h264… avc decodec allow read all h264 and mp4 what integer apple decodec not do (b frames, 8x8, etc…). ps: if you try avc.decodec, no need mp4.decodec, avc.decodec decode mp4 and h264… (Version 0.6.6)

avc1Decoder | May 15 2007 |
MYCOMETG3 MPEG-4 AVC does not include MPEG-4 ASP/SP. AVC is called as "H.264". ASP or SP are generally called as "MPEG-4". avc1Decoder just handles H.264 media only. mp4vDecoder handles ASP/SP media only. (Version 0.6.6)

Freespace 2 Launcher | May 4 2007 |
GUILLAUMEK Really nice! A proper launcher was very much needed in order to make FS2 SCP more user-friendly. Now we need a proper installer. Java scripts are nice but still a turn-off for beginners, and full install DMGs are quickly outdated. Maybe wrap a GUI around Turey's Java scripts.. (Version 1.1.1)

iGetter X | Nov 22 2006 |
GUILLAUMEK I have been using iGetter for the last two years. Worked very well - not perfectly - but very well. The only disappointment comes from a few occasions where it would not manage to connect and launch download but this only occurred with websites i know are problematic with most download managers. Ultimately very rare. (Version 2.5)
