Camino | Nov 18 2008 |
GUILLAUMEK Camino used to be awesome. But it just can't keep up anymore. It was my #1 browser for 4 years, when Safari was not yet an option and Firefox was too clumsy and bloated. I know Camino has never been about packing every possible feature, but it's now starting to lag seriously. I've gone Safari+Glims+AdBlock. It's incredible. (Version 1.6.5)

GUILLAUMEK The Calculator is nice, but this one has a few extra features, such as having multiple currency exchange rates available instead of having to switch from one to another every time. (Version 0.9.8)

Update Engine | Sep 30 2008 |
GUILLAUMEK "including Cocoa apps, screen savers, and preference panes. It can even update kernel extensions, regular files, and root-owned applications." This is the interesting part, where it's better than Sparkle. This framework seems to handle files without executables, which Sparkle lacks AFAIK. You can't currently update stuff like plugins, drivers, file systems.. in fact, for most of the stuff installed in /Library Sparkle can't help you. I think the only exception are preference panes which can check for updates by themself. You actually need a program or daemon which contains the Sparkle framework to checks for updates. Now, I'm not too tech savy on all this so don't take my word as gospel. (Version 1.0)

Vuze | Jun 16 2008 |
GUILLAUMEK Have you used Azureus extensively? I'm really surprised to hear you say it does not work well. Granted its interface isn't really user-friendly, but it's simply the best damn bitorrent client on the internet when it comes to transfert rates, stability and customizability. And that's taking into account the many plugins that are available. Actually, you could rant about its memory usage. (Version 3.1)

EVE Online | Jun 12 2008 |
GUILLAUMEK As a former beta tester of EVE Online, I feel you overlooked a few things about EVE which ought to be mentioned. First, it should be said that the learning curve is quite steep. Think Battlecruiser 3000AD.. Also, unlike WoW, this game is a lot less focused on instant fun. The game is slower paced and it takes a long time and a good ship+stats before one can venture in 0.0 and get a taste of PVP, the core of EVE imo. In a nutshell, you can't just drop in a few times a week, play an hour or two, and still have fun. The stats system reduces that problem a bit though. That said, EVE is great if you dig complexity and depth over instant gratification. You just need to be unemployed or something to enjoy it I guess :p (Version 5.10.56866)

GUILLAUMEK Nice app. I use it sometimes to create weird chroma maps for VJing. It'd be a lot better though if we had more than one fractal algorithm. I mean it's little more than granular noise/clouds, plus stretching, as of now. It'd be great to have more complex structures. Seamless tiling is great btw. Very useful, very nice. NTFS for Mac OS X | Jun 19 2008 |
DOUGOFTHEABACI I can, and shall. NTFS for Mac, I find, transfers files much faster than NTFS-3G. It also gels better with OS X. For instance, a 3GB file can take up to 15 minutes with NTFS-3G but it took 4 with NTFS for Mac. The only draw-back I can see so far is there is an apparent incompatibility with VMware Fusion that stops you from mounting Boot Camp with it. (Version 6.5.1)

STORMCHILD Better keep an eye on your ratios. Last time I used Transmission with a private tracker, it submitted bad stats, my ratio suddenly went from about 2.5 to negative 9 billion, and obviously my account got disabled. I learned my lesson, went back to Azureus, and even though it still drives me nuts how much of my CPU and memory it consumes, at least it doesn't get me kicked off any trackers. I really want to like Transmission, as it is such a dream to use compared to the bloated heap of Java (i.e. turd) that is Azureus, but I won't be trusting it with any torrents from private trackers (on which I've spent months or years building up my ratio) anytime soon. GUILLAUMEK Office 2008 was buggy - and still is - but it's rather good software IMO. Plus the Mac BU has a certain degree of autonomy inside Microsoft. They have their own release schedule, are not bound to the Windows interface. I'm not sure the Mac BU folks deserve that bashing. (Version 7.0)

Synergy | Apr 29 2008 |
GUILLAUMEK "About the crashing (or not crashing), I can assure you that it's really a completely separate issue. It's a known bug in Leopard's NSAppleScript running under Garbage Collection. It's effectively random, and sooner or later it will crash... until Apple fixes the bug. I've been pretty lucky with this and I only see a crash every few days, but I know others see them all the time: luck of the draw, it would seem. I'm going to put together a couple of new releases which incorporate this fix for the artwork issue: * 3.5a7: a new build of the alpha series, which will still unfortunately suffer from Apple's NSAppleScript bug. * 3.2.1: a new build of the stable 3.2 series, which won't be affected by the NSAppleScript issue (never has been, never will be) because it doesn't use Leopard's Garbage Collection. I'll try to get those out tomorrow." Quoted from http://rails.wincent.com/issues/668 So no more artwork issues! (Version 3.5a7)

Apple Safari | Mar 18 2008 |
GUILLAUMEK On second thought, in some cases size can matter. I'm thinking of Portable apps for flash drives or SSD laptops like the EEE PC. Then again, flash drives aren't 128MB anymore and 64MB really isn't that much. (Version 3.1)

Apple Safari | Mar 18 2008 |
GUILLAUMEK Quick answer: you're wrong. Long answer: As always, Mac apps are packages. This means the size of the package is usually way larger than the executable itself. The rest consists of various resources which are loaded only when needed. Take for exemple the Command & Conquer 3 package. It's 3.52GB... Now, if you want to discuss the memory footprint of Safari, you rather should open Camino, iCab and Safari. Open some tabs and check the RAM usage in Activity Monitor. (Version 3.1)

I just tried and I'm downloading OnyX at 800KB/s on a 20M dsl line. It seems lots of people have trouble DLing the soft though so maybe this is indeed a server-side issue. (Version 1.9.4b1)
