CoRD

GRYFFIN  CoRD still offers much better performance than Microsoft's own Remote Desktop Client (currently version 2.0.1). Just tried the two side by side, connecting to a Dell workstation running WinXP Pro on the same subnet. CoRD connected faster, and the frame rate seemed to be about double MS RDC's when dragging an object around the screen.

CoRD's UI may not be as polished (sorry, but I hate "drawers"), and it crashes on me once every few months or so, but it does what it does very well, better than anything else I've found. What's not to like?

GRYFFIN  PROS: Visually stunning, polished animation, innovative display concept; I prefer graphical tools for this sort of thing. Preview feature is a nice addition, but crashed the app on some files.

CONS: Main graphic seems too small, even on a big monitor; negative space is nice and all, but I'd prefer if DD displayed its info graphic as large as possible. Also, DD has no ability to trash files itself — MAJOR omission. Also, costs $$$ in a field full of free alternatives.

COMPARISONS: WhatSize and OmniDiskSweer use a text-only approach that's fast and simple, but as I said above, I feel a graphic representation is more intuitive than a hierarchical list of folder/file sizes. GrandPerspective has nice graphics, but it's harder to navigate, and harder to get a good "big picture" view, and really needs a hierarchical list. DiskInventoryX is still the one to beat IMHO: similar graphic display as GrandPerspective, but it also has a hierarchical view — best of both worlds!

GRYFFIN  Or to view them in FrontRow, if you've set up a Mac as your media center.

GRYFFIN  If that's all you need, not a full GTD app, check out MenuCalendarClock: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14351/menucalendarclock-ical

SWF & FLV Player

GRYFFIN  ROB_GENDREAU: Name me one other player that can step through SWFs one frame at a time. I can't.

There are plenty of tools for yanking Flash video off a web page. But for a Flash developer, for analyzing your animation frame by frame, this thing is a godsend.

GRYFFIN  Everybody's doing that now. The first three numbers are the traditional version number (3.8.17), the last (four digit) number is the build number. Ain't no big thang.

GRYFFIN  My most-often used widget, and my favorite! Handles every shipping service, and several I've never even heard of! Solid as a rock, easy to use, attractive on screen... what's not to like?

The only way this widget could be better is if it was expandable to handle multiple packages, without having to run multiple instances. It's not unusual for me to have 6-10 packages in the air, and it's silly to require 25MB of RAM for each one. (I realize my needs may be a bit extreme, though, so I won't withhold a star for that.)

GRYFFIN  Assuming you can get it to work (which few people seem to have done), what does this do that CosmoPod 2 (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/24232/cosmopod) doesn't already do for $5 less?
