GRANTNEUFELD  If the developer does update this to exclude non-rsvp’d events, I hope they make it an option. I like having my non-rsvp’d events in my calendar since I’m usually quite behind on my rsvp’ing.

GRANTNEUFELD  Significant security vulnerability discovered in versions prior to 2.2.1. Upgrading is highly encouraged.

GRANTNEUFELD  The beta expired in 2006 and will no longer let you play any tracks. No new version since. The developer’s website has no info (whatsoever — just an empty web page template).

It’s too bad that this was abandoned. If anyone is in touch with the developer, maybe they could recommend a non-time-restricted re-release of the beta, or even open-sourcing it.

GRANTNEUFELD  Note that this has been updated to version 0.7.1 (on December 20, 2007). The Macupdate download link isn’t working (as of this writing), so go to the More Information link to find the download.

GRANTNEUFELD  Actually, most browsers can save to PDF. Just print the page you are currently browsing, and select “Save as PDF” from the “PDF” pop-up (usually at the bottom left) in the print dialog.

GRANTNEUFELD  My family’s chess-aficionado has long complained of the predictability of the AIs in the chess games he has played. This one sounds like it may actually hold some interest for him…

GRANTNEUFELD  The link to version 1.2.1 downloads a completely different program - Smultron.

The correct link is:

Library Books

GRANTNEUFELD  This is better than free because it has saved me from overdue fines. The red star visual reminder for books coming due is fantastic. The green star for requested books becoming available on hold is great, too.

This is a very useful and helpful tool. Highly recommended (just like I highly recommend taking advantage of, and otherwise supporting, public libraries).

GRANTNEUFELD  I've found it to be very stable and reliable, too. The only problems I can recall running into involved trying to do massive batch file comparisons across remote volumes mounted over Apple's built-in filesharing.

GRANTNEUFELD  I was all set to download and update the new version until I read that this release "Added support for web authors to disable 'save as' feature in web browser."

That's a terrible change from my view. Removing control from the user is part of the whole "digital rights management" (DRM) effort of large corporations.

To the Flip4Mac developer: please give control of this otherwise excellent software back to the users. Thanks.

SJK  Is support for disabling 'save as' a terrible change from the perspective of web authors who previously didn't have that control?

ST00P!D M0NK3Y  You can still save movies even if the function is set to off. It's a magical thing known as saving as a page as a web archive.

IANWEIR  Or, you can paste the URL of the file in question into the Downloads window in safari - don't think any amount of DRM on the planet is gonna stop that one.

GRANTNEUFELD  The MySQL package for Mac OS X makes the basic installation procedure a snap (as opposed to the old process that required building and installing it from the command line). The System Preferences pane is handy, too - although it could do with providing access to a few more options, too.

You still have to do a bit of manual setup, but it's getting easier and easier.

Be sure to get the free MySQL Administrator application (also from MySQL AB) for a Mac OS X graphical front end to administration of MySQL.

GRANTNEUFELD  I consider this tool essential for my workstation. I use it for things like tracking my hours while contracting (I don't really need one of those fancy time-tracking applications). I also drop in interesting snippets (like books, bands, movies to check out) while reading stuff on the web.

It's also handy for those doing the "Getting Things Done" (GTD) style of personal time management. A very convenient spot for all of those lists.

Personally, I don't bother with the mouse-based activation. I set it to open/close using the F16 key, and checked the "Open only with hotkeys" and "Close only with hotkeys" checkboxes in the preferences. That way, it never accidently pops up.

Having the option to set a hot-corner (like Exposé and the Screensaver) instead of along the side of the monitor might get me to use mouse activation again.

ABALEM ^_^  Thanks for the advice, I hadn't seen the hotkey option and having pop-up all the time was getting on my nerves... Now, it's just perfect ! :-)
